Chapter 3 - Deeper

Adam walked through the dark cave with ease, as he had night vision as a vampire. As for Little Moon, though it could see, similarly to Adam, he stored it away in case of danger.

Adam moved cautiously, ducking and turning occasionally when needed. Soon, he noticed that the farther into the cave, the more artificial the cave became, transforming into brick walls and an obvious path which led to two doors.

Adam approached the doors and pushed them open, revealing rows of old broken beds. The room's blueish-gray interior was cracked all over. Though it was filled with broken and rusted armor and weapons, it seemed to be some sort of ancient resting area or medical room.

Studying the room, Adam spotted a relatively clean and 'new' looking silver armor set. He placed his hand on the chest plate and brushed dust off of it, its shine reflecting his form.

"What the hell is a place like this in a cave in the middle of nowhere?"

'And why are you so clean?'

He said while staring at the shining silver armor pieces, their reflective surface etched with scale-like patterns. While Adam was not very knowledgeable, he knew that it was odd to have a suspected medical center deep in a cave. Even more oddly, a polished-looking, fresh set of armor was in an obviously ancient structure.

He walked towards the door at the other end of the room, keeping a watchful eye on his surroundings. Adam entertained the thought of someone living in, or at least visiting, the cave often, due to the clean set of armor. While Adam was excited at the prospect of finally meeting people, he knew he had to be cautious, as humans could be as bad or worse than the predators he had failed to encounter in the forest clearing.

There were also other dangers to worry about, such as unseen creatures residing within the cave, or even the fantastical nature of the world he knew next to nothing of. Thus, he had more than enough reason to be cautious.

Adam gripped the knob and slowly pushed open the auburn door. The exit revealed a narrow hall with brick, dungeon-like walls leading to a split path, left and right. The cold, damp air flowed out of the doorway, followed by a foul stench. The smell was a harrowing concoction of death, blood, and garbage.

With his enhanced sense of smell, Adam couldn't handle the odor. He fell to the ground, emptying the contents of his stomach. His stomach churned and rolled as if begging for mercy. His nostrils were burning, a red liquid flowing from them.

He tried standing, but his legs shivered like a newborn deer before completely buckling. Adam sank his fangs into his lips, causing a metallic taste to fill his mouth, using the pain to regain some composure. He held the doorknob as if holding for dear life, and exerted much force to close the door, then rolled away, and lay flat on his back.

He laid there, blankly staring at the ceiling. I want to go home, he thought. He felt all the conviction to traverse the cave drain from his body.

After several minutes of absent-mindedness, Adam rose to his feet. He quickly took the set of polished armor and ran out the way he came. After a few minutes of traversing the cave, he made it to the entrance of the cave where he dwelled.

As soon as he made it out, a black wall made from several layers of permanently manifested shadow and blood sealed the deeper caves shut.

He neatly placed the armor set to one side before lying on his bed. He closed his eyes, wanting to drift away to the land of dreams, to take his mind off his recent experience. Though he had some trouble due to the sun still hanging high in the sky, he eventually faded into sleep.

I ran across the grass-covered hill, my tiny hand dragging along my closest friend. We were on a picnic, and I had convinced her to come pick flowers with me.

She was beautiful. I had a crush on her. Though I was too scared to tell her, I was always with her, and that made me happy.

On that day, we picked many flowers and made flower crowns for everyone. Mother, The animals, and ___. I placed the crown I made for her on her head and put her favorite flower, a lily, in her hair beside it.

I still remember the smile on her face that day. It seemed like the world stopped to appreciate it. In that moment, I knew that I wanted to protect that smile, to be the reason she smiled, and the reason it stayed. In that moment, I knew that I had to confess my feelings to her.

But, as if the world itself refused to let my happiness last. The sky darkened and turned a deep, blood-red hue. A dark mass rose behind her, and its black, unfathomable tentacle rushed forward, piercing her chest. A river flowed, staining her white gown. Her eyes widened, turning glossy and lifeless.

A deep dread filled my being as the dark mass rushed forward, its body splitting open to reveal a disgusting, toothy maw, and swallowed her whole. It refused to stop though, and continued forward, fully intent on swallowing me as well.

I could hear my mother calling what I assumed to be my name, but I couldn't be sure. I was sure she was calling something, though.

It was all a blur as the dark mass seemed to cover the world. The toothy maw enveloping me. Then, the world went black.
