The tension in the living room was really high as Lyra and Mrs. Donovan sat facing each other with no one uttering a word. The silence was slowly killing Lyra who was now biting her lips in nervousness with her fingers digging into her skin.
Her aunt had left a few minutes ago and her new boss had asked her to remain sitted because she had something to tell her but then she wasn't saying anything and this made Lyra even more uncomfortable. She wanted to begin work as soon as possible but the Madam seemed to have other plans for her. The Madam finally spoke up. "So, Lyra. Have you heard of the Donovan family before?" Lyra found this question a bit out of place but this was her Madam asking so she replied. "No Madam. It was aunt who told me." The Madam nodded her head in understanding. "What did your aunt tell you?" She asked again. Lyra exhaled. She didn't know why she was being asked such questions but she answered them nonetheless. "She told me that the Donovan's were the most powerful family in LA and beyond." She replied.
"Oh. So, she didn't tell you about my son?" Her Madam asked again. Lyra felt the question was quite weird. Her son? What was her business with her son? Lyra couldn't understand where the conversation was headed but her aunt told her nothing about her boss' son. She shook her head negatively letting the Madam know she didn't know her son. Mrs. Donovan sighed and got up. "Well, that's no problem. You'll meet him when he returns." She told Lyra.
Why do I need to meet him? I'm the maid. I'm here to work. She really didn't want to pry in this family's business. " Mr. Brooks! Miss. Goergia!" The Madam called out and the butler from before and an elderly woman came in sight. "Yes, Madam Donovan." They Both answered her. "This here is Lyra Levine, she'll live with us from now on. Mr. Brooks, you will show her to her new room and help her settle in. Miss. Goergia, I want you to make her feel comfortable. I'll leave her in your care now. Dear, this is the butler, Mr. Brooks and the chief cook, Miss Goergia. They will take care of you. If you need anything, just ask them. " The Madam instructed them and told her. " Right away Madam. " " I'll do just that Madam. " The two replied again while she stared on cluelessly.
Lyra was becoming more and more confused. She's a maid, why does she need a separate room from the other maids? She also didn't need to be comfortable. She just wanted to resume working as soon as possible. The Madam was too nice, she needed to ask. " Madam, when do I start working?" The Madam turned to her with that smile that never left her face since she got there. " When my son is back dear. " She simply replied Lyra's question and went upstairs.
Lyra stood still unable to fathom the situation. What does her work as a maid have to do with the Madam's son? Maybe she would be his personal maid? She was brought back from her thoughts when she felt hands touch her bag. She noticed the aged lady wanted to take her bag but she quickly refused. " No please, I can handle it myself. Don't worry. " She said and the old lady smiled. " It's okay dear. I don't mind doing it. " But Lyra couldn't let an old lady do this kind of thing." No it's really fine. I can do it. " She assured the lady. " I will take you to your room Miss Levine. This way." The butler said and walked towards the stairs. Lyra smiled at the old lady who reciprocated the smile and took her things following the butler, Mr. Brooks upstairs.
Walking through the large corridor for almost two minutes, they got to a door and the butler opened it and let her walk in. Lyra gawked at the sight before her. Was this room for her alone? It was as big as her whole house back at home. It was beautifully decorated. It was painted in grey color and there was a big wide window. At the other side was a french door that probably led to a balcony. The room was quite spacious with a queen sized bed in the middle. At the side, there were two sofas and a small table. She walked slowly and noticed another door. She moved towards it and on opening it, it was a room sized closet. She walked back out and stood in awe. This couldn't possibly be her room. "Um, excuse me sir. Whose room is this?" She asked the butler who had a straight face on. "It is yours Miss. Levine and you can call me Mr. Brooks." He replied with an accent she just noticed. "That's not right. I'm just a maid. This must be the wrong room." She said with a look of disbelief on her face. " But it is infact your room Miss Levine. Do you not like it?" He asked her. What? Not like? This was heaven compared to home. Of course she loved it. She was so happy it was her room. She quickly pushed aside the thought of how this was possible and decided to enjoy the feeling before they changed their mind. "No, it's very nice. Thank you." She replied to the butler's question. " Splendid. Why don't you get settled in before Sire returns." After getting an answer to his question, Mr. Brooks said bowing slightly and then walked out leaving Lyra to her enormous haven.
Immediately he left, she fell on the big bed and almost sinked into it. She frowned and got up. The bed was so soft and she was afraid her small stature will get buried inside.
But then again, it was the first time she had such thoughts and she loved the feeling. She took her bags to the bed and began unpacking so she could quickly settle in before the Madam's son returned and had to work.
She was still curious about the whole thing but she would wait till later when the Madam's son was back. She was certain she would get answers to her questions then...
