Alex couldn't sleep, hee had tried.
The nurses had dimmed the lights, checked his medication, and reminded him that his body needed rest, but sleep refused to come.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Lynn.
He saw her sitting beside his hospital bed with tears on her face.
He heard her voice telling him she loved him and then he opened his eyes again and found the chair beside him empty.
Something was wrong, he knew it.
James had tried to hide it, but Alex had known James for too long. He knew when the man was lying.
And James had lied to him.
Alex slowly turned his head toward the window.
The city outside was dark, the lights from the buildings shining through the glass.
He wondered where Lynn was and why she hadn't come back.
He wondered what everyone was keeping from him.
The door opened quietly.
Marcus stepped inside.
Alex immediately looked at him.
"Marcus."
The butler stopped.
"Yes, sir?"
"Come here."
