The evening sky burned with hues of red and orange as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting an ominous glow over Landsol. The townsfolk, their hearts heavy with dread, scrambled to safety as the roar of the dragon echoed from behind the woods. The air was thick with fear and tension. Adventurers, including Pecorine and Yukki, prepared to defend their home, their weapons and resolve their only shields against the beast.
The trees shuddered as the dragon emerged from the forest, its massive form blotting out what little light remained. It spread its wings, letting out a deafening roar that seemed to shake the earth itself. The adventurers launched a volley of arrows and spears at the creature. Some struck true, embedding themselves in its thick scales, but the dragon merely snarled, curling its wings around its body like a shield.
"It's not backing down!" Yukki shouted, clutching his sword tightly.
"Keep firing!" Pecorine urged, her voice steady despite the chaos.
The dragon, tired of the relentless assault, spread its wings and leapt into the sky. It hovered ominously before diving toward the town. Then, with a deep inhale, it unleashed a torrent of flames. Screams filled the air as adventurers and buildings alike were consumed in the inferno. The dragon soared over the town, raining destruction wherever it went. Landsol was ablaze.
Pecorine gritted her teeth. "We can't let it destroy everything!"
She rushed forward, gripping a borrowed sword tightly, and leapt at the dragon as it landed in the town square. Its claws tore through stone and wood as it cornered fleeing adventurers, devouring some in its wrath. Pecorine charged, her blade flashing in the firelight as she struck at the beast's wounded back.
The dragon roared in pain and fury, swinging its tail in retaliation. Pecorine narrowly dodged, rolling to safety. The beast turned its full attention to her. It lashed out with claws and flames, its attacks relentless. Pecorine was forced to focus entirely on defense, her sword barely deflecting the crushing blows.
The dragon cornered her, drawing in breath for another fiery attack. Pecorine braced herself, but Yukki appeared beside her, raising a shield.
"Hang on, Pecorine!" he shouted, planting his feet firmly. The dragon's fire engulfed them, but Yukki held the shield steady. The intense heat melted the metal, but they emerged unscathed.
"You saved me, Yukki," Pecorine said, breathing heavily. "Now let's finish this!"
Together, they launched a counterattack. Yukki's magic surged, enhancing Pecorine's strength and speed. She delivered a powerful slash to the dragon's chest, drawing blood, as arrows from the remaining adventurers rained down. The dragon, now enraged, lashed out with its tail, sending Yukki hurtling through the air. He crashed into a burning house, disappearing in a cloud of debris.
"Yukki!" Pecorine screamed, her eyes blazing with fury. She lunged at the dragon, slashing at its wings, but the beast folded them defensively. With a mighty flap, it soared high above the town, then turned, diving at full speed.
The dragon hit the ground like a meteor, its wings spread wide, destroying everything in its path. The town was reduced to rubble, and a thick cloud of dust filled the air. Pecorine emerged from the haze, her gaze locked on the dragon. With a shout, she leapt onto its back, driving her sword into its shoulder near its wing joint.
The dragon roared in pain, twisting and bucking to shake her off. But Pecorine held firm, even as it launched into the sky. The dragon flew higher and higher, its body twisting violently. Pecorine's grip faltered, and she was flung into the air.
She plummeted toward the earth, the dragon chasing her with its jaws wide open. Below, Yukki had found a giant crossbow amidst the rubble. He struggled to aim, blood and sweat dripping down his face.
"Please work," he muttered, firing. The arrow shot through the air with a mix of precision and luck, striking the dragon's right eye. The beast roared in agony, veering away from Pecorine. Both she and the dragon crashed into the river below.
The dragon surfaced first, its remaining eye filled with rage. It climbed out of the water, screaming in pain, as blood dripped from its wounded eye. Pecorine emerged moments later, coughing and gasping for air. She watched in horror as the dragon turned its gaze back to the town.
The dragon, blinded in one eye but still capable of destruction, began gathering energy in its throat. Its signature move, a massive fire breath, lit up the night sky. The inferno engulfed what little was left of Landsol, leaving nothing but ash and ruin. The dragon, still pained by its injury, let out a final roar before retreating to its lair.
Smoke rose into the night as Pecorine climbed onto the riverbank. She stared at the burning town, her heart heavy with sorrow. The devastation was overwhelming. Her knees gave out, and she fell to the ground.
"I failed them," she whispered, tears streaming down her face. "I couldn't save anyone."
When the fire finally died down, Pecorine made her way back into the town. Smoke and ash hung in the air, and the once lively streets were filled with silence. Bodies of the dead and injured lay scattered among the rubble. Homes and shops were nothing but charred remains.
Pecorine wandered through the wreckage, searching for any signs of life. Her heart leapt when she spotted Yukki, emerging from an underground pit, his clothes singed but his face alive with relief.
"Yukki!" she cried, running to him.
"Pecorine!" he called back, wrapping her in a hug. "I thought I'd lost you."
She held him tightly, tears of gratitude mixing with her sorrow. "I'm so glad you're safe."
The aftermath of the dragon's attack was devastating. The people of Landsol were left with nothing but despair. Food, water, and shelter were scarce. The streets were filled with the cries of the injured and the wails of those mourning their loved ones. Yukki, standing amid the ruins, felt the weight of this land's dangers pressing down on him.
"This world... it's so cruel," he murmured. "How can anyone survive this?"
Pecorine remained silent, her gaze fixed on the ruins of the town. The loss was unbearable, and guilt gnawed at her heart. "We couldn't stop it," she said softly. "All these lives... gone because we weren't strong enough."
Unbeknownst to them, a figure watched from the shadows of the forest. A mysterious cat girl in a cape observed the destruction with a smirk.
"Looks like Pecorine got lucky this time," she muttered. "But I'll face her again... and next time, she won't escape."
With that, she disappeared into the darkness, leaving the ruined town behind.
