"Our… daughter?" Kate's voice was a breathless gasp, her mind clearly still reeling from the sudden shift in conversation. The blush on her face deepened, her fingers tightening around my shoulders as if she needed something to hold onto.
She still managed to stammer out, "Amy is fine… she… she doesn't know about any of this…" Her voice was small, almost guilty, as if the idea of Amy being unaware of our secrets was both a relief and a source of shame.
Kate's voice was trembling, her words spilling out in a rush as if she'd been holding them back for far too long.
