I walked up the stairs calmly at first. Making sure Danilo wasn't following behind me.
I paused at the top and peeked down over the railing. He was at the sink, scrubbing a plate like his life depended on it. Good. Busy.
My heart was hammering anyway.
I dashed to the bedroom and closed the door behind me as quietly as I could. Then I locked it. Just to be extra safe. Just in case he decided that "not leaving" meant "following me everywhere."
I ran to the bathroom. My hands were shaking before I even opened the vanity drawer. The bottom one. The lowest drawer. The one no one ever looked in except me, and Danilo, when he was digging for painkillers or old chargers. Which was why I always hid them there.
I fished around. My fingers bumped into all the unwanted PR skincare products I got every month. Vitamin C serums. Jade rollers. Face masks that smelled like grass, and then my hand hit cardboard.
I pulled it out.
