The car was warm.
The second thing I noticed was the music. Soft. Low. Something acoustic playing through the speakers that I hadn't put on.
Kolli was in the passenger seat. He was gently humming along. His beanie was still on, pushed back a little, and he was sipping on the last bit of milkshake he'd ordered before we left. I could hear the sound of the straw going down, hitting the plastic lid. Then that little sucking noise when he got to the bottom and there was nothing left but ice.
The warmth of the car had made his cheeks a bit rosy. He was picking at the fries in the McDonald's bag on his lap. The smell filled the car. Deep fried potatoes and salt. Every time he dug into the brown paper bag it crunched. He offered me one. Then another.
I took them. Happily. As long as he was willing to feed me, I'd let him.
He was smiling. Small. Real. Beautiful and it made the ache in my chest feel a bit less.
