The coffee had gone cold, but the phone was burning hot. After the call with Anushka and Virat ended, Aarav didn't get a moment of silence. The news of his engagement (courtesy of Virat's loose lips) and the IPL victory had created a perfect storm.
Caller 1: Rohit Sharma (Hitman) "Oye Sethji!" Rohit's voice was lazy but warm. "Double congratulations. First the cup, then the girl. You are moving fast. Virat told me you saved Paaji's number as 'Dad'. That takes guts, man. If I did that, I'd be scared to pick up the phone!" Aarav laughed. "It works, Rohit bhai. Manifestation." "Teach me this manifestation. I need another IPL trophy four is too less for me. Anyway, well played. That six over third man... humko bhi sikha de (teach me too). See you in the Indian camp."
Caller 2: MS Dhoni (Thala) The call was short, precise, and legendary. "Hello, Aarav." "Mahi bhai." "Good game. You finished it well. Not celebrating early... that was good. Focus stays." "Learned from you, Bhai." "Hmm. And congrats on the engagement. Sachin paaji is a good man. Take care of her. And take care of your back. Fast bowling captains don't last long if they don't rest. Bye." Click. Aarav stared at the phone. "Did Thala just give me relationship and fitness advice in 30 seconds?" Shradha giggled. "He's efficient."
Caller 3: Rishabh Pant (Spidey) "BROOOO! PARTY! WHERE IS THE PARTY?!" "Rishabh, calm down." "No calm! You won IPL! You got engaged! I am coming to Patra City! I want dhokla! I want fafda! And tell Shradha bhabhi I said hi! Don't forget me when you become big star!" "You are already a star, Rishabh. I'll send you the dhokla."
Then came the barrage from the bowling cartel—Bumrah, Siraj, Chahal. They were less interested in the romance and more interested in how he bowled the 152 kmph yorker in the 19th over. It was a brotherhood of speed and spin, acknowledging one of their own leading a franchise to glory.
By 2:00 PM, the bags were packed. The lobby of ITC Narmada was a fortress of security as two convoys prepared to leave.
One for the airport (The Tendulkars heading to Mumbai). One for the bus (The Titans heading to Patra City).
Aarav stood near the elevator with Shradha. The rest of the team and her family gave them a respectful ten-foot radius.
"So," Aarav said, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Back to reality. Medical books and exams."
"And you back to your kingdom," Shradha smiled, adjusting his collar. "Patra City is waiting for their Seth."
"I'll visit Mumbai next week," he promised. "I have the BCCI review meeting. I'll sneak out."
"Use the laundry cart again?" she teased.
"Never again," he shuddered. "Arjun still looks at me suspiciously."
Sachin Tendulkar walked over. He shook Aarav's hand firmly. "Proud of you, son. For the cricket, and for how you handled everything else. We'll see you in Mumbai."
"Thank you, D... Sir," Aarav corrected himself at the last second, though Sachin's eyes twinkled.
Anjali hugged him. "Eat properly, Aarav. You look thin."
As the Tendulkar family got into their SUVs, Shradha turned back one last time. She waved, her hand over her heart. Aarav returned the gesture. The cars pulled away.
Aarav turned around. His team was waiting. Abhishek Sharma was wearing sunglasses indoors. Gill was holding a travel pillow. Nehra was already on the bus, honking the horn.
"Chalo, Captain!" Nehra yelled. "The dhols are waiting!"
The journey from Ahmedabad to Patra City was usually a few hours, but today, it was a victory parade. The highway was lined with banners. Every toll booth had people waving flags.
As the bus entered the city limits, the atmosphere changed. It wasn't just fans; it was family.
The bus pulled into the Vijay Khel Maidan. It was currently closed to the public, but the preparations for tomorrow were visible over the walls. Stages were being built. Sound systems were being tested.
Aarav took out his phone. He posted a story on the official Gujarat Titans handle.
Video Message:Selfie mode. Aarav stands in front of the team bus, the Patra City skyline behind him.
"Kem cho, Gujarat! We are back! The trophy is home. But the celebration isn't complete without you. Tomorrow. 4 PM. Vijay Khel Maidan, Patra City. Me, the boys, the cup, and YOU. Let's create history. Live telecast on our YouTube channel for those who can't make it. Aava De!"
He posted it.
Ashish Nehra walked up to him, looking at the empty ground that would be overflowing tomorrow. "You ready for this, Aarav? Ahmedabad was big. But this... this is your home. They will eat you alive with love."
Aarav smiled, looking at the pitch, "I'm ready, Nehra ji. This is what we played for."
The sun set over Patra City, bathing the dusty ground in gold. The trophy sat on the dashboard of the bus, glinting. Tomorrow, the town would erupt.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Vijay Khel Maidan wasn't just a cricket ground today; it was a pilgrimage site.
When the Gujarat Titans management announced the free entry passes online, the server didn't just slow down; it evaporated. Within 7 minutes, all 60,000 QR codes were claimed. The digital queue had reached 4 lakhs. People from neighboring cities had camped outside the stadium walls since dawn, hoping for a glimpse from the rooftops.
Inside, the scene was breathtaking. Patra City was a new city, usually quiet. But today, it was vibrant. Every inch of the stands, the grass embankments, and even the trees surrounding the maidan was covered in people. They wore blue. They wore masks with Aarav's face. They held posters that read: "Humara Seth, Humara Garv" (Our Boss, Our Pride).
The scorching afternoon sun didn't dampen the spirit. The local dhol pathak (drummer squad) was setting a rhythm that vibrated through the ground.
At 4:05 PM, the gates of the pavilion opened. Smoke machines blasted blue fog into the air. The DJ played the Titans anthem.
First came the support staff. Then the young guns—Abhishek, Gill, Rinku, Arshdeep—running out, filming the crowd on their phones, looking genuinely stunned by the scale of the turnout. Ahmedabad was massive, yes, but this? This was intimate. This was family.
Then, the music stopped. A hush fell over the 60,000.
Aarav Pathak walked out. He was wearing a simple GT training kit and sunglasses. In his hands, he held the golden IPL Trophy.
He didn't run. He walked slowly to the center of the stage built near the pitch. He placed the trophy on the podium. Then, he took off his sunglasses and looked at the crowd. These were the people who saw him play tennis ball cricket. These were the people who fed him when he was struggling. These were his people.
He raised both hands.
The roar that followed was primal. It wasn't just cheering; it was a release of years of hope. Tears were streaming down the faces of old men in the front row.
Aarav took the microphone. "Kem cho, Patra City!"
ROAR.
He picked up the trophy. "This is YOUR cup!"
He lifted it high. The confetti cannons fired. The players ran onto the stage, spraying water and lifting Aarav onto their shoulders.
For the next two hours, there were no barriers. The players did a victory lap, not in a vehicle, but on foot, high-fiving the fans through the fence. Rashid Khan tried to learn the Garba from a group of fans near the boundary. Shubman Gill was seen signing a bat for a local academy kid. Abhishek Sharma was on the DJ console, trying to mix Punjabi beats with Gujarati folk music.
It was chaotic. It was loud. It was dusty. But as the sun set over Patra City, bathing the Vijay Khel Maidan in a golden glow, it felt perfect.
Aarav sat on the edge of the stage, watching his town celebrate. He took a photo of the 60,000 people—a sea of humanity united by a game and a boy who dared to dream.
He posted it with a simple caption: "Love.❤️"
The celebration went on late into the night, but for Patra City, this day would last forever.

Date: 1st June 2022 Location: BCCI Headquarters, Wankhede Stadium Complex, Mumbai Room: The Conference Hall (4th Floor)
The air conditioning in the plush conference room was set to a crisp 20 degrees, but the temperature in the room was steadily rising. The heavy oak table was strewn with files, empty Bisleri bottles, and plates of half-eaten cashews.
Five of the most powerful men in world cricket sat around it.
Sourav Ganguly (Dada) – President. The Prince of Kolkata, now the Administrator. He sat at the head, looking sharper than ever in a navy suit, tapping a Montblanc pen on his diary.
Jay Shah – Secretary. The man with the political acumen and the execution skills. He was scrolling through a tablet, looking at the IPL revenue charts.
Mahim Verma – Vice-President. A loyalist to the President's vision.
Jayesh George – Joint Secretary. The quiet observer.
Arun Singh Dhumal – Treasurer. The money man, focused on the bottom line.
The Honeymoon Phase
" The numbers are astronomical," Arun Dhumal said, breaking the silence. He pushed a spreadsheet towards the center. "The IPL Final viewership shattered all records. The 'Aarav Pathak' factor is real. The merchandise sales for Gujarat Titans alone have overtaken Mumbai and Chennai combined in the last week. We are sitting on a goldmine."
Sourav Ganguly smiled, a rare, satisfied expression. "I told you. The boy has charisma. When he stood there and silenced 130,000 people... that wasn't just cricket. That was theater. That is what sells."
"He is the next face," Mahim Verma agreed enthusiastically. "After Kohli and Rohit, we were worried about a vacuum. But Aarav fills it perfectly. Good looks, aggressive cricket, and now... a winner."
Jay Shah nodded, though his eyes were still on the screen. "His partner news broke the internet yesterday. The engagement metrics are higher than Virat's wedding which could be due to rise in social media users though. We need to capitalize on this. Maybe push him for more ad campaigns for the BCCI domestic season."
"Exactly," Sourav leaned back, clasping his hands. "We have a bankable asset. A new King in waiting."
The mood was celebratory. The coffee was poured. But then, Sourav Ganguly cleared his throat. The sound was distinct—a signal that the pleasantries were over.
"But," Sourav said, his voice dropping an octave. "Every King needs a kingdom. And right now, the Indian kingdom is... crowded."
The room went silent. Everyone knew who he was talking about.
Virat Kohli.
2019 World Cup Winner.
2021 World Test Championship Winner.
2021 T20 World Cup Winner.
He was arguably the most successful Indian captain in history. His power was absolute. He selected the team. He decided the schedule. He decided when the coaches spoke. He was bigger than the Board.
"The power dynamic is skewed," Sourav continued, his eyes hardening. "Virat decides everything. The selectors are just rubber stamps. We sit here, run the administration, but on the field, it is the 'Virat Kohli Show'. He demands things, he doesn't request them."
"He has earned it, Dada," Jay Shah said quietly, not looking up. "Three ICC Trophies in all three formats. No captain has done that. Not even MSD."
"Success breeds arrogance, Jay," Sourav countered sharply. "We are the BCCI. The Board of Control. Right now, we are not controlling anything. We are just funding his empire. He stepped down from T20I captaincy on his own terms. Now he wants to hold onto ODI and Test captaincy forever? We need to look at the future."
Sourav leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the table.
"I propose we remove Virat Kohli from the ODI captaincy immediately."
The silence that followed was deafening. It was as if a grenade had been pulled in the room.
Jay Shah dropped his tablet. It clattered loudly on the table. Arun Dhumal looked at Sourav as if he had grown a second head.
"What?" Jay Shah whispered. "Dada, have you lost your mind?"
"Hear me out," Sourav said, his voice steady, prepared for the backlash. "White ball cricket needs one vision. Virat left T20s. Rohit is the T20 captain. Now you have two white-ball captains? It creates confusion. Rohit should lead in both ODIs and T20s. Virat can focus on Tests. And eventually... we groom Aarav for the Test role."
"Logic ki maa-behen ek kar di aapne (You have destroyed logic)," Jay Shah snapped, his usually calm demeanor cracking. "Confusion? What confusion? Virat won us the World Cup in 2019! He won the T20 World Cup six months ago! You want to sack a World Cup winning captain? The public will burn this building down!"
"The public has a short memory," Mahim Verma interjected, supporting Ganguly. "They are chanting 'Seth Saheb' now. They want the new blood. Virat is 33. How long will he go on? We need a transition plan."
"Transition plan?" Arun Dhumal stood up, pacing the room. "Transition happens when a captain fails! Virat hasn't failed! He is at the peak of his powers! This isn't about cricket, Dada. This is about control. You don't like that he doesn't listen to you."
Sourav's eyes flashed. "I am the President of the BCCI! I don't need him to listen to me; I need him to respect the institution! He picks fights with the media, he picks fights with umpires. It reflects on us. We need a calmer head. Rohit is calm."
"Rohit is 35!" Jay Shah shouted, slamming his hand on the table. "You want to replace a 33-year-old fitness beast with a 35-year-old who is not fit and don't know how long he would play for? And Aarav? He played only 50-60 matches in all three formats combined! You want to give him the keys to the kingdom because he won an IPL? IPL is not International Cricket!"
"Aarav has the temperament!" Sourav argued, his voice rising. "Did you see the final? He handled pressure better than Virat did in the 2017 Champions Trophy final! He is ready!"
"This is bizarre," Jay Shah shook his head, looking disgusted. "I don't support this. It is political suicide. If we sack Virat, the fans will revolt. The sponsors will panic. Virat is the brand."
"Aarav is the new brand!" Mahim Verma countered. "We saw the numbers, Jay! You just showed them to us!"
"Revenue is not everything!" Arun Dhumal yelled. "Winning matters! Virat wins tournaments! You don't fix what isn't broken just because you want to show who is the boss!"
"It is broken!" Sourav stood up now, towering over the table. "The dressing room is divided! I have reports. Players are walking on eggshells around Virat. He is too intense. We need a breathable atmosphere. Rohit brings that."
"Who gave you these reports?" Jay Shah narrowed his eyes. "Or are you creating them? I talk to the players too. They would die for Virat on the field."
"They fear him," Sourav corrected. "There is a difference."
The argument raged for twenty minutes. Slang was thrown. "Yaar", "Paagal", "Dimag kharab". Professional decorum had vanished. It was a street fight in suits.
Jay Shah was adamant. "I will not sign off on this. As Secretary, I hold the convening power for the selection meeting. I will not let you sack him without a valid cricketing reason. 'He is too powerful' is not a reason; it's an insecurity."
Sourav glared at him. "It is a governance issue. No individual is bigger than the sport."
"He is the sport right now in India!" Jay Shah retorted.
Jayesh George, who had been silent the entire time, watching the titans clash, finally cleared his throat. He tapped his glass of water with a pen.
Ding. Ding.
"Gentlemen," Jayesh said softly. "Please."
Everyone looked at him.
"We are getting nowhere," Jayesh said calmly. "Dada wants change. Jay bhai wants stability. Both have valid points. But making a decision in this heat... it will be a mistake. A disaster."
He looked at the clock.
"Let's postpone this," Jayesh suggested. "Let the dust of the IPL settle. Let's see how the upcoming series goes. We don't need to announce ODI captaincy today. Let's wait."
Sourav sat down slowly, adjusting his tie. He knew he didn't have the consensus yet. Jay Shah was a formidable opponent.
"Fine," Sourav muttered. "We postpone. But mark my words... the split captaincy conversation is not over. We cannot have two power centers."
Jay Shah picked up his tablet, checking it for cracks. "There is only one power center, Dada. The Trophy Cabinet. And Virat has filled it. Until he empties it, you can't touch him."
"We'll see," Sourav said coldly.
"Meeting adjourned," Jayesh George announced quickly, before punches could be thrown.
As they filed out of the room, the tension was palpable. Arun Dhumal walked with Jay Shah. "He is obsessed with removing him," Arun whispered. "He wants to be the only Alpha," Jay replied, his face grim. "But he forgets... you don't mess with the King unless you want a revolution."
Sourav remained in the room with Mahim Verma. "Jay is too emotional," Mahim said. "He is pragmatic," Sourav stared at the empty chair where Jay sat. "But he is looking at the past. I am looking at the future. Aarav Pathak is the future. And to bring the future in... we have to clear the past."
Sourav picked up his phone. He dialed the Chief Selector, Chetan Sharma. "Chetan? Yes. Don't announce the squad yet. We need to talk. Yes... about the captaincy."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: 2nd June 2022 Location: BCCI Headquarters, Cricket Centre, Mumbai Meeting Room: The Selection Chamber
The boardroom air was still heavy with the residue of the previous day's clash between Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah. But today, the agenda wasn't political warfare; it was tactical execution.
The All-India Senior Selection Committee, led by Chetan Sharma, had gathered to pick the squad for the upcoming home series against South Africa.
Present:
Chetan Sharma (Chairman of Selectors)
Debasis Mohanty (Selector)
Harvinder Singh (Selector)
Sunil Joshi (Selector)
Sourav Ganguly (BCCI President)
Jayesh George (Joint Secretary)
Mahim Verma (Vice-President)
The Agenda: The Rest and Rotation
Chetan Sharma projected the schedule on the screen.
9th - 19th June: 5 T20Is vs South Africa (Home)
26th - 28th June: 2 T20Is vs Ireland (Away)
July: Tour of England (1 Remaining Test, 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs)
"The workload management report is in," Chetan Sharma began, adjusting his glasses. "Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah have requested rest for the South Africa series. They will fly directly to England to prepare for the crucial 5th Test."
Sourav Ganguly nodded. "Granted. We need them fresh for England. That test match decides the series. So, we are looking at a 'B' team for South Africa?"
"Not a 'B' team, Dada," Sunil Joshi corrected. "A 'Future' team. This is the perfect dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup in Australia. We need explosive options."
Chetan Sharma clicked the remote. The screen changed to a player profile. It wasn't just a profile; it was a statistical anomaly.
PLAYER PROFILE: AARAV PATHAK
Age: 22
Role: Batting All-rounder (Right-hand bat, Left-arm Fast)
ICC Ranking: #1 All-Rounder (All Formats)
Awards: ICC Player of the Year (2021)
The room fell silent as they looked at the numbers. In a strictly realistic world, these numbers were video-game cheats. But this young man, Aarav Pathak was a phenomenon who had taken international cricket by storm since his debut.
"He is not a rookie," Sourav Ganguly stated, his voice firm. "We treat him like a youngster because of his age, but look at the stats. He has played more match-winning knocks in two years than most play in a career. And he just led a new franchise to the IPL title."
"Exactly," Mahim Verma added. "The fans are calling him 'Seth Saheb'. The brand value is through the roof. We need to elevate him."
"So," Chetan Sharma looked around the table. "Who leads against South Africa? Rohit is out. Rahul is injured (groin injury). Who is the Captain?"
"Rishabh Pant," Sunil Joshi suggested. "He is the designated Vice-Captain of the Test team after Rahane. He leads Delhi Capitals. He is the senior-most available option after Rahul."
"What about Hardik?" Debasis Mohanty asked. "He's back to full fitness. He was in the LSG Captain, and he has experience."
"Hardik is just returning to international after injury," Chetan dismissed. "We can't burden him with captaincy yet. Let him bowl his four overs first."
Sourav Ganguly leaned forward. "What about Aarav?"
The room paused.
"Captain?" Chetan Sharma hesitated. "Dada, he just won the IPL, yes. But giving him the Indian captaincy directly? Over Pant? Pant has been in the system longer."
"Pant is emotional," Ganguly countered. "We saw Aarav in the final. Calm. Calculated. Ruthless."
"If we make Aarav captain now," Jayesh George pointed out pragmatically, "it will destroy Pant's confidence. Pant is being groomed. If we jump Aarav over him, it creates a rift. We don't need another rift."
Ganguly sighed. He knew Jayesh was right. The politics of the dressing room were fragile.
"Fine," Ganguly conceded. "Pant is Captain. But I want a clear signal sent to the world. And to Virat."
He tapped the table.
"Aarav Pathak will be the Vice-Captain."
Chetan Sharma raised an eyebrow. "Vice-Captain? Over Hardik? Over Bhuvi?"
"Yes," Ganguly said, a glint in his eye. "It's a soft launch. Let the public see 'Aarav Pathak (VC)' on the team sheet. Let them get used to the idea of him in leadership. Let's see the reaction. If the fans embrace it... then the transition becomes easier later."
"Agreed," Mahim Verma said. "It's a good test. He supports Pant, learns the ropes, but carries the designation."
With the leadership settled, the rest of the squad was picked on merit and IPL form.
Openers: Ruturaj Gaikwad (Orange cap contender) and Ishan Kishan.
Middle Order: Shreyas Iyer, Deepak Hooda (Solid IPL).
Finishers: Rishabh Pant (C), Dinesh Karthik (The miraculous comeback story of RCB), Hardik Pandya.
All-Rounders: Aarav Pathak (VC), Venkatesh Iyer, Axar Patel.
Spinners: Yuzvendra Chahal (Purple Cap), Ravi Bishnoi.
Pacers: Bhuvneshwar Kumar (The veteran), Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, and the new sensation from GT, Arshdeep Singh.
"Arshdeep deserves this," Chetan Sharma noted. "His bowling in the final and throughout the IPL was world-class."
"And Aarav's workload?" the physio's note was brought up. "He bowled 150+ kmph consistently in the IPL. He played every game, including the high-intensity final just three days ago."
"He is a machine," Ganguly started, but Chetan Sharma interjected carefully.
"Dada, the medical team is adamant. He needs a slightly longer recovery window to flush out the fatigue from the final just for the muscle to loosen. They suggest resting him for the 1st T20I in Delhi on June 9th. It's just too soon. We risk a niggle if we push him."
Ganguly frowned, wanting the star attraction from ball one, but nodded eventually. "Fine. Workload management is crucial. He misses the first game. He can join the playing XI from the 2nd match in Cuttack. But he remains the Vice-Captain. We announce him as VC for the series regardless."
"Agreed," Mahim Verma said. "It's a good test. He supports Pant as both are good friends from U-19 days, learns the ropes, but carries the designation."

@CricCrazyJohns: "Aarav Pathak named Vice-Captain! The rise is meteorological! From IPL winner to Team India leadership group in 2 days! The Prince is ascending! (Resting for 1st match makes sense, man played nonstop)."
@ViratKohliFanClub: "Pant Captain makes sense, but Aarav as VC is interesting. Are they grooming him to replace Rohit/Virat? The stats don't lie though. 2000 Test runs in 24 innings. He deserves it."
@GT_Army: "Seth Saheb is VC! Only a matter of time before he becomes Captain. Indian cricket is in safe hands. Rest well King, see you in Cuttack."
@CricketStatistician: "Reminder: Aarav Pathak was the ICC Player of the Year 2021. He averages 93 in Tests and 62 in T20Is. Making him VC isn't a gamble; it's a correction of hierarchy."
Aarav's POV (Pathak Vila)
Aarav was sitting in his study, signing some official document. His phone buzzed. He saw the BCCI tweet.
Vice-Captain.
He stared at the letters next to his name. It wasn't the top job. But it was the first official step. The Board had acknowledged him not just as a player, but as a leader. He also noted the workload clause.
"First match rest," he muttered to himself. "Nehra paaji must have called Chetan or the selection committee. He was threatening to kidnap me if I didn't sleep for a week, even though I am totally fine."
"Vice-Captain?" Abhishek Sharma peeked over his shoulder. "Oye hoye! Seth Saheb is now officially the Deputy Sheriff! Do I have to salute you in the nets now?"
Aarav smiled, putting the phone down. "Only if you want to stay in the team, Abhi."
"Power corrupts," Abhishek sighed theatrically. "I liked you better when you were just a rich kid."
Aarav leaned back in his chair. The South Africa series would be fun. Playing alongside Pant, Hardik, and DK. No pressure of captaincy, just the responsibility of the Vice-Captaincy. And after that... England. The Red Ball. The ultimate test.
He looked at the calendar on the wall. June 9th. The Proteas were coming. And the Vice-Captain was ready to welcome them.
