The Vijay Khel Maidan, famously known for being a high-scoring paradise with a lightning-fast outfield, was currently witnessing a masterclass in defensive T20 bowling. The Chennai Super Kings, four-time champions with a batting lineup built for power, were being systematically suffocated.
By the 15th over, the score had barely crawled past the 100-run mark (106). The architect of this middle-over paralysis was the wrist-spinner, Kuldeep Yadav.
Aarav Pathak had deployed Kuldeep with surgical precision. The Chinaman bowler didn't try to buy wickets with loose, flighted deliveries; he bowled flat, ripping the ball off the surface, constantly testing the inside and outside edges of the CSK batters.
Harsha Bhogle (On Air): "You look at the scorecard and you wonder what pitch they are playing on. Kuldeep Yadav has just finished his spell. Look at those figures on your screen! 3 overs, 17 runs, and the crucial wicket of Moeen Ali earlier on. He has been the most economical bowler tonight. He hasn't just stopped the runs; he has created a pressure vacuum."
Over 17: (1*7 = 7 Thala for a Reason)
The score read 114/6. The 16th over had just concluded. The crowd in Patra City was buzzing with a strange, conflicting emotion. Out in the middle stood the ultimate finisher, the legendary, The Man, The Myth, The Legend, MS Dhoni. The entire country loved him. But standing at the top of his bowling mark, rolling his sleeves up, was their hometown hero, their 'Seth', Captain Aarav Pathak.
Ravi Shastri (Voice booming): "Here we go! Fasten your seatbelts, ladies and gentlemen! The 17th over. Aarav Pathak comes back into the attack. And who does he have on strike? Mahendra Singh Dhoni. It is the master against the prodigy. It is pace against sheer experience. The Wankhede had the Sachin chants, but Patra City is screaming for its Vice-Captain!"
Aarav marked his run-up. He set his field meticulously. Fine leg was up. Third man was back. Deep mid-wicket was patrolling the boundary.
Ball 1: Aarav steamed in. 148 kmph. He bowled a heavy, back-of-a-length delivery, angling it into Dhoni's ribs. Dhoni, looking to ride the bounce, defended it down to the pitch with soft hands. Dot.
Ball 2: Aarav cranked up the pace. 150.2 kmph. He went fuller, attacking the stumps. Dhoni jammed his bat down, digging out the yorker to short mid-wicket. Dot.
Ravi Shastri: "He is giving him absolutely nothing! 150 kmph right at the toes! Dhoni is struggling to get his bat down in time. The sheer hostility from the young captain is a sight to behold!"
Ball 3: Aarav walked back to his mark. He didn't look at the crowd. He wiped the sweat from his brow, his eyes locked onto the legendary wicket-keeper. He knew Dhoni loved to hit the ball straight down the ground or pull it over mid-wicket. Aarav decided to take the pace off, but keep the line tight.
He ran in fast, replicating his 150 kmph action perfectly, but at the point of release, he rolled his fingers over the seam. 124 kmph. The Off-Cutter.
It pitched on the fourth stump line. Dhoni, expecting the express pace, threw his hands at the ball, trying to carve it over the infield on the off-side. He was through the shot a fraction too early. The ball gripped the Patra City surface just a millimeter, taking the outside edge.
Behind the stumps, Henrich Klassen was moving even before the ball hit the bat. The thick edge flew to the right. Klassen dove full-stretch, extending his right glove, and the ball stuck perfectly in the webbing.
Aarav spun around, both arms raised in the air, letting out a visceral roar.
Harsha Bhogle: "EDGED AND TAKEN! A brilliant piece of deception by Aarav Pathak! The slower cutter does the trick! MS Dhoni goes hard at it, takes the outside edge, and Klassen takes a fantastic diving catch to his right! "
Sanjay Manjrekar: "That is the wicket they wanted! Dhoni was just getting his eye in. If he had stayed till the 20th over, 140-145 could have easily become 165. Aarav Pathak recognized the danger and delivered a knockout blow. Absolute perfection in execution!"
MS Dhoni c Pant b Aarav 12 (15)Score:
Deepak Chahar walked out to bat. A handy lower-order hitter, Chahar was capable of swinging the bat, but he was walking into a furnace.
Aarav wasn't done. He had tasted blood.
Ball 4 & 5: Aarav welcomed Chahar with two consecutive bouncers at 149 kmph. Chahar ducked awkwardly under both, taking his eyes off the ball.
Ball 6: Aarav walked back to his mark.
Aarav ran in. He didn't hold anything back. He put his entire back, shoulder, and core into the delivery. The speed gun flashed an ominous red number: 151.8 kmph.
It was full, fast, and swinging late into the right-hander. Deepak Chahar tried to bring his bat down, but it was a futile exercise against that velocity. The ball sneaked under his swinging blade, bypassing his front pad entirely.
CRASH. The middle stump was violently uprooted, cartwheeling backward and pulling the stump mic wire with it.
Ravi Shastri (Screaming): "BOWLED HIM! ABSOLUTE TIMBER! 151 KILOMETERS PER HOUR! Deepak Chahar didn't even see that coming! Aarav Pathak has broken the stump in half! What a spell of fast bowling this is! Two wickets in the over, and Chennai Super Kings are crumbling into dust!"
Deepak Chahar b Aarav 0 (3)Score:
Ravindra Jadeja watched the carnage from the non-striker's end. The premier CSK all-rounder was fighting a lone battle. He was batting on 18, watching his partners disappear one by one.
In the 19th over, Jadeja managed to farm the strike, hitting a couple of boundaries off Jason, using his wrists to manipulate the field. He pushed his personal score to 27 off 15 balls, dragging the team score to 139/8.
The final over of the innings arrived. Aarav tossed the ball to his young left-arm specialist, Arshdeep Singh.
Harsha Bhogle: "The 20th over. Arshdeep Singh to bowl. He has the wicket of Devon Conway off the very first ball of the match. He has been brilliant. Ravindra Jadeja is on strike, 27 off 16. He will be looking to swing at every single delivery to push this past 150."
Over 19.1: Arshdeep nailed a perfect wide yorker. Jadeja tried to slice it but missed. Dot.
Over 19.2: Arshdeep missed his length by an inch. It was a low full toss on the pads. Jadeja whipped it beautifully through deep square leg. 2 Runs. (Good fielding by Shubman Gill in the deep saved the boundary).
Over 19.3: Jadeja (27 off 18) knew he had to clear the ropes. He pre-meditated his movement, shuffling deep into his crease to get under the yorker.
Arshdeep saw the shuffle. Showing immense maturity for his age, he pulled his length back slightly and bowled a slower, back-of-the-hand cutter into the pitch.
Jadeja was entirely deceived by the lack of pace. He swung his bat with all his might, aiming for the mid-wicket stands, but the ball stuck in the pitch. He went through his shot too early, catching the ball high on the splice of his bat.
The ball looped high up into the night sky, swirling towards the long-on boundary. David Miller, cool as ice, positioned himself perfectly under it. He didn't have to move an inch. The ball dropped safely into his reverse-cupped hands.
Ravi Shastri: "IN THE AIR... AND TAKEN! DAVID MILLER MAKES NO MISTAKE! Arshdeep Singh outsmarts the veteran! The slower ball does the trick, Jadeja goes for the big heave, and he perishes! THAT IS THE END OF THE INNINGS!"
Ravindra Jadeja c Miller b Arshdeep 27 (19)
Harsha Bhogle: "All out for 141! Who would have predicted this at the toss? The Chennai Super Kings, on a fantastic batting wicket at the Vijay Khel Maidan, have been bundled out in just 19.3 overs! Arshdeep Singh finishes with 2 for 16 in his 3.3 overs. Aarav Pathak led the destruction at the death, and Kuldeep Yadav spun a web in the middle. A phenomenal bowling performance by the defending champions!"
As the umpires pulled the bails and the players began to walk off the field, the stadium atmosphere underwent a magnificent transformation.
The CSK fans, the famous "Yellow Army" who usually traveled in massive numbers and dominated stadiums with their whistles and chants, were completely, utterly silenced. Their yellow flags hung limply over the railings. 141 was a devastatingly low score on a ground that regularly saw 200+ totals.
But their silence was immediately swallowed by a synchronized, overwhelming roar from the home crowd.
In the East Stand, the 1,023 members of the Gujju Titans.
Aarti, standing on her conductor's platform, raised her baton. BOOM-BOOM... CLAP!BOOM-BOOM... CLAP!
Twenty massive Drums began to beat in perfect unison. The deep, resonant sound reverberated through the concrete foundations of the stadium. It wasn't random cheering; it was a militaristic, organized beat that commanded attention.
Following the drumbeat, Hemant, Kinjal, Axar, and the rest of the 1,023 fans raised their square placards high into the air simultaneously.
The massive mosaic formed a gigantic, glowing blue image of the Gujarat Titans Trophy Lift, followed seamlessly by the flipping of the boards to reveal a massive portrait of Aarav Pathak holding the ball aloft.
The rest of the 60,000 Patra City locals in the stadium caught the rhythm. They joined the clapping, amplifying the sound until it felt like a physical wave crashing over the ground.
"AAVA DE! AAVA DE! AAVA DE!"
Sanjay Manjrekar (In awe): "Just look at the stands, Harsha! I have broadcasted cricket all over the world, but this fan culture... this is something straight out of a European football final. The coordination, the drums, the massive Tifo boards... The Gujju Titans have turned the Vijay Khel Maidan into an absolute fortress. The Chennai fans have been completely drowned out. The psychological pressure of playing here must be immense for the opposition."
The Gujarat Titans walked off the field as a unified pack. They were laughing, bumping fists, looking incredibly relaxed.
As they crossed the boundary rope, they were greeted by the core brain trust of the franchise. Head Coach Ashish Nehra was grinning, high-fiving the bowlers. "141! Brilliant execution, boys!" Nehra cheered. "We hit the right lengths. Kuldeep, excellent control in the middle!"
But the most distinct shift in the team's atmosphere came from the two legends standing beside Nehra. Team Mentor, Yuvraj Singh (Yuvi Paaji).
Since Yuvi Paaji had joined the squad, he had injected a ruthless, uncompromising philosophy into the dressing room. Gone were the days of "respecting the total" and "taking it deep." Yuvi's mantra, perfectly aligned with Aarav's aggressive captaincy and winning obsession, was simple: Hit, hit, hit.
Yuvraj Singh slapped Aarav on the back, his eyes gleaming with aggressive intent. "Tricky score? Nonsense!" Yuvraj laughed, looking at Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma who were already padding up. "You boys listen to me. We are not playing for 141. We are playing as if the target is 200. I don't want to see blocking. I don't want to see 'getting your eye in'. If the ball is in your slot, you put it in the stands. Every ball should go for a boundary. We break their spirit in the Powerplay. Understood?"
Abhishek Sharma grinned, strapping on his helmet. "Yes, Yuvi paaji. Full throttle from ball one."
Ravi Shastri (Wrapping up the innings): "So, the target is 142. On paper, at the Vijay Khel Maidan, the Gujarat Titans should chase this down with their eyes closed. They have the firepower, they have the home crowd, and they have an absolutely terrifying winning mentality instilled by Nehra, Yuvraj, and Captain Pathak. But CSK has a bowling attack capable of defending low totals. We are set for a fascinating chase here in Patra City. Don't go anywhere!"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The twenty-minute innings break felt like a mere heartbeat for the 60,000 fans packed into the Vijay Khel Maidan. The adrenaline from the spectacular first-innings collapse of the Chennai Super Kings was still coursing through the stadium.
As the ground staff hurried off the pristine green outfield, pulling the heavy rollers away, a deep, rhythmic thumping began to echo from the East Stand.
Aarti, the designated conductor of the 'Gujju Titans', stood on her raised platform. She raised her baton high into the humid Gujarat night. BOOM-BOOM... CLAP!BOOM-BOOM... CLAP!
The Drums struck in perfect, terrifying unison. On her cue, the 1,023 hardcore fans in the designated block rose to their feet. In a flawlessly synchronized movement, they lifted their square placards high into the air.
The individual squares merged to form a colossal, breathtaking Tifo of the Gujarat Titans Crest—the golden mountain peak and the lightning bolt—spanning the entire width of the stand. It was a visual masterpiece, a declaration of territorial dominance before a single ball had even been bowled in the chase.
Harsha Bhogle (Voice laced with awe): "Welcome back to the Vijay Khel Maidan, and just look at the scenes greeting us! The Gujju Titans are putting on an absolute exhibition in the stands! The drums are beating, the massive logo is held high... The atmosphere is less like a cricket stadium and more like a gladiatorial arena. The Chennai Super Kings are walking into a wall of pure intimidation."
As MS Dhoni led his men out onto the field, looking incredibly calm despite the low total on the board, the giant LED screens flashed a breaking graphic.
Ravi Shastri: "Before the batters walk out, we have some historic news! For the very first time in the Indian Premier League, we are seeing the Impact Player Rule being utilized by both teams!"
Sanjay Manjrekar: "Let's break this down, Ravi. The Gujarat Titans, having finished their bowling, have subbed out their Australian fast bowler, Jason Behrendorff. He's done his job with the new ball. Coming in to replace him as an extra batter is the elegant left-hander, Sai Sudharsan! It effectively gives Gujarat an impossibly deep batting lineup to chase down these 142 runs."
Ravi Shastri: "And what about the Chennai Super Kings? MS Dhoni knows 141 is vastly under par. He needs wickets. So, he has subbed out a batter and brought in the skiddy fast bowler, Tushar Deshpande. Both captains are playing their trump cards immediately. The 12-man era of the IPL has officially begun!"
Through the boundary ropes, to the deafening roar of the Patra City crowd, walked the two young princes of the Gujarat Titans top order. Shubman Gill, pristine and composed, and Abhishek Sharma, aggressively twirling his bat.
They met mid-pitch. "You remember what Yuvi paaji said in the dressing room?" Gill asked, tapping the red soil with his spikes.
Abhishek grinned, a confident, almost arrogant spark in his eyes. "Hit from ball one. No respect in the Powerplay. If it's in the slot, it goes to the stands."
"Exactly," Gill nodded, bumping his glove against Abhishek's. "Let's finish this early so everyone can go to sleep."
Abhishek took the strike. He marked his guard heavily on the middle stump, looking up at the field. MS Dhoni was busy directing traffic. He knew Abhishek loved to free his arms, so he placed a deep square leg, a tight cover, and a slip in place. He handed the new, hard white Kookaburra to his premier swing bowler, Deepak Chahar.
Ravi Shastri: "Here we go. The chase begins. 142 the target. Abhishek Sharma takes strike. Deepak Chahar, who can make this new ball talk, starts from the Pavilion End. This first over is going to be crucial."
Over 1: Deepak Chahar to Abhishek Sharma
Ball 0.1: Chahar steamed in. The crowd noise was a continuous, roaring waterfall. He tried to bowl his trademark outswinger, aiming for the top of the off stump, but the ball slipped out of his sweaty fingers. It sprayed wildly down the leg side. Abhishek didn't even move. The umpire stretched his arms wide. Wide.
Harsha Bhogle: "A nervy start from Deepak Chahar. The ball just slipped out. You can feel the pressure radiating in the middle. 142 looks small but defending it requires absolute perfection."
Ball 0.1: Chahar walked back, wiping his hands on his towel. He ran in again. This time, he got the line right. He pitched it on a good length outside the off-stump, getting the ball to shape away beautifully.
But Abhishek Sharma had absolutely no intention of playing a defensive sighter. He didn't wait for the swing to take effect. He danced down the track with lightning-fast footwork, completely negating the movement. He met the ball on the rise, clearing his front leg, and threw his hands at it.
The connection was brutal. The ball flew high over the leaping mid-wicket fielder, taking one massive bounce before crashing into the boundary cushions. FOUR.
Ravi Shastri (Booming): "BANG! WHAT A START! Abhishek Sharma steps out on the very first legal delivery and deposits it over mid-wicket! No respect for the swing! No respect for the new ball! He is following the Yuvraj Singh doctrine to the letter! The crowd goes wild!"
The East Stand erupted. Aarti slashed her baton, and the drums pounded a triumphant, chaotic rhythm.
Ball 0.2: Chahar, visibly rattled by the aggression, decided to attack the stumps. He didn't want to give Abhishek room to swing. He bowled a fast, full delivery right on the middle and off-stump line.
Abhishek didn't step out this time. He stayed rooted deep in his crease. He read the length instantly. He cleared his hips slightly to create a clean arc.
What followed was a shot of pure, unadulterated aesthetic brilliance. It was a high, flowing bat swing, connecting with the ball right under his eyes, followed by a majestic, one-handed follow-through that held the pose for the cameras. It was the exact, carbon-copy swing of his mentor, Yuvraj Singh.
The ball rocketed straight back over Deepak Chahar's head. It didn't just clear the boundary; it flew deep into the second tier of the sight screen pavilion. SIX!
Sanjay Manjrekar (In sheer awe): "Oh, my goodness! That is glorious! That is pure Yuvraj Singh! The high backlift, the clean swing through the line, and that glorious follow-through! He has hit that miles into the stands! This young man is making an absolute mockery of this run chase!"
Harsha Bhogle: "The Gujarat Titans dugout is on its feet! Yuvraj Singh is sitting there with a massive smile on his face, clapping for his protégé! That shot was a mirror image of the master! Chahar is under severe, severe pressure here!"
Ball 0.3 : Deepak Chahar walked back to his mark, his shoulders slumping slightly. Two balls, ten runs. The 142-run target was already looking like 100. He tried to overcompensate. He tried to bowl a wide, slower cutter to deceive the charging batsman. He missed his line entirely, pushing it way beyond the wide guideline on the off-side. Abhishek left it alone. The umpire signaled again. Wide.
The scoreboard read 12/0 off 0.2 overs. The wheels were coming off rapidly for Chennai. Behind the stumps, MS Dhoni took off his right glove.
He didn't yell. He didn't wave his hands in frustration. He simply walked slowly down the pitch towards Deepak Chahar. The crowd noise dipped slightly as the legendary tactician approached his bowler.
Dhoni placed a calm, reassuring hand on Chahar's shoulder. He spoke quietly for about ten seconds, pointing towards the square leg boundary and then tracing a line on the pitch. He was resetting the field and, more importantly, resetting his bowler's mind.
Ravi Shastri: "And here comes the intervention. MSD knows this game is slipping away in the very first over. He walks up, calms his premier bowler down, and adjusts the field. He has brought fine leg up and pushed deep square leg back. A clear plan is being hatched."
Ball 0.3: Chahar, looking much more composed after the chat with his captain, ran in. He bowled a heavy, back-of-a-length delivery, angling sharply into Abhishek's ribs, trying to cramp him for room.
Abhishek tried to play a quick pull shot but was beaten by the extra bounce and the tight line. He missed the ball entirely, and it thudded into Dhoni's gloves. Dot.
Sanjay Manjrekar: "Excellent comeback! Dhoni's advice works immediately. Chahar hits the deck hard, gives him no room to free those arms, and gets a vital dot ball."
Ball 0.4: Chahar stuck to the plan. Another good length delivery on the middle and leg stump. Abhishek, looking to rotate, pushed it defensively towards mid-on. Dot.
Ball 0.5: Chahar, feeling confident after two dot balls, decided to test Abhishek with a sharp bouncer. He banged it in short and fast, aiming right for the badge on the helmet.
But Abhishek was expecting it. He didn't duck, and he didn't try a risky hook shot. He stayed incredibly still, waiting for the ball to rise. At the very last microsecond, he arched his back, dropped his wrists, and simply opened the face of his bat, using Chahar's own pace against him.
The ball flew off the angled blade, soaring high over the wicket-keeper and the short third-man fielder, bouncing just inside the rope before crossing it. FOUR.
Harsha Bhogle: "Cheeky! Extremely cheeky from Abhishek Sharma! He anticipates the bouncer, arches his back, and plays a delicate upper cut over the keeper's head! You set a trap for the pull, and he plays it over third man! This is breathtaking batting in the Powerplay!"
Ravi Shastri: "He is toying with the bowling! Pace, bounce, swing—nothing is bothering him right now! He is seeing the ball like a beachball!"
Ball 0.6 : Chahar, frustrated by the audacious boundary, bowled a perfect, tailing yorker on the final delivery of the over. Abhishek brought his bat down just in time, digging it out solidly to mid-off to prevent any further damage. Dot.
End of Over 1.Score: Gujarat Titans 16/0. Abhishek Sharma: 14* (6 balls) Shubman Gill: 0* (0 balls)
As the umpires called the end of the first over, the cameras panned to the Gujarat Titans dugout.
Ashish Nehra, usually a bundle of nervous energy pacing the boundary line, was sitting down, casually sipping from a coconut, a wide grin plastered across his face. Beside him, Yuvraj Singh was laughing, pointing at Abhishek on the field and saying something to the coaching staff that made them all chuckle.
And standing at the very edge of the dugout, leaning against the railing with his arms crossed, was Captain Aarav Pathak. He looked entirely relaxed, a satisfied, predatory smirk on his face. The 16-run assault in the first over had completely shattered whatever residual hope the Chennai Super Kings had carried onto the field.
The Gujju Titans in the stands beat their drums with renewed, frantic energy. The chase of 142 had just been violently hijacked, and the young princes of Gujarat were only just getting started.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The first over from Deepak Chahar had leaked 16 runs, completely dismantling the early pressure. MS Dhoni, always proactive, didn't wait to make his move. He signaled to the dugout. The Impact Player was activated. Tushar Deshpande came onto the field, replacing the batter Ambati Rayudu, to bolster the pace attack.
Harsha Bhogle: "And there it is! MS Dhoni uses the Impact Player rule immediately. Tushar Deshpande is handed the ball for the second over. He has a tough job ahead of him. Shubman Gill is on strike, yet to face a delivery."
Over 2: Tushar Deshpande to Shubman Gill
Ball 1: Deshpande ran in, looking to hit the deck hard. He bowled a heavy length ball, angling into the body. Gill didn't back away. He stood tall, his eyes locked onto the seam. With a minimal backlift, he executed a brutal, short-arm jab. He whipped it powerfully past the mid-wicket fielder. The ball raced across the dew-kissed outfield and crashed into the advertising boards. FOUR.
Sanjay Manjrekar: "That's a Gill special! A short-arm jab to a length ball. This is not short enough by any stretch of the imagination to be pulled, but he just gets on top of the bounce and muscles it past mid-wicket! Supreme confidence!"
Ball 2: Deshpande corrected his line, going slightly wider outside the off-stump on a good length. Gill tried to punch it on the up, but the ball gripped the surface and stayed surprisingly low. It took the leading edge, shooting into the turf and rolling harmlessly towards cover. Dot.
Ball 3: Deshpande bowled an identical delivery. Gill, trying to adjust to the lack of bounce, checked his shot. Another leading edge. This one went right down to the ground and straight to the cover fielder. Dot.
Ball 4: Gill, realizing the pitch was two-paced, sensibly tapped the next ball into the gap at point and scampered through. 1 Run.
Ball 5: Abhishek Sharma was back on strike. The Yuvraj Singh philosophy—hit from ball one—was burning in his veins. Deshpande tried to bowl a yorker but missed his mark, serving up a half-volley on the leg stump. Abhishek cleared his front leg and swung with a beautiful, high arc. The connection was absolute perfection. The ball soared high into the Patra City night sky, landing deep into the stands over deep square leg. SIX!
Ravi Shastri: "HUGE! BIG SHOT! He picks it off the pads and sends it into orbit! Abhishek Sharma is not showing any respect to the bowlers today! He wants to finish this chase before the dew even settles!"
Ball 6: Deshpande, under severe pressure, bowled it short and wide. Abhishek threw his hands at it, slashing it fiercely. It flew past backward point. The fielders gave chase, but they ran three quick runs, and a sloppy overthrow from the deep allowed them to complete the fourth! 4 Runs.
End of Over 2.Score: GT 31/0. Runs from Over: 15.
Despite the carnage, MS Dhoni walked up to Deepak Chahar. He patted the swing bowler on the back, offering a few words of advice, and handed him the ball for his second over. Dhoni was backing his premier bowler to find a breakthrough.
Over 3: Deepak Chahar to Shubman Gill
Ball 1:Chahar pitched it up, searching for that elusive swing. It was right in the slot, slightly wide of off-stump. Shubman Gill leaned forward, presenting the full face of the bat. He played a picture-perfect cover drive. He threaded the needle, finding the microscopic gap between cover and extra cover. FOUR.
Harsha Bhogle: "Oh, that is pure art! The gap was tiny, but Gill finds it with absolute precision! The fielders didn't even bother moving!"
Ball 2: Chahar, frustrated, strayed onto the pads. Gill casually flicked it off his wrists. He didn't try to keep it down; he just chipped it elegantly over the infielders on the leg side. It took one bounce and crossed the ropes. FOUR.
Ball 3: Chahar gritted his teeth. He decided to take the pace off and bang it into the pitch. A short-of-a-length, slower delivery. Gill, looking to continue the assault and hit straight down the ground, was entirely deceived by the lack of pace. He went through his shot too early. The ball hit high on the bat, right near the sticker. It popped up softly into the air towards mid-off. Mitchell Santner settled under it and took the simplest of catches.
Sanjay Manjrekar: "CAUGHT! The change of pace does the trick! Dhoni's trust in Chahar pays off! Gill tried to play it straight, but the ball stuck in the pitch, hit near the sticker, and it's a dolly for Santner! A brilliant cameo comes to an end!"
Shubman Gill c Santner b Chahar 13 (8)Score: GT 39/1
The stadium went silent for exactly two seconds as Gill walked off. Then, the PA system blasted a heavy bass drop. The giant LED screens flashed: AARAV PATHAK - CAPTAIN.
The roar that followed defied description. The 60,000 fans inside the Vijay Khel Maidan erupted. But the true spectacle was happening in the East Stand.
Aarti, the conductor of the Gujju Titans, raised her baton. The deafening drum beats started. BOOM-BOOM... CLAP!
In absolute, terrifying synchronization, the 1,023 members of the vanguard raised their placards. The image that formed across the entire stand was legendary. It was a hyper-realistic, massive mosaic of Aarav Pathak, head tilted back, raising his bat high into the air—the exact pose from his maiden international century celebration.
Ravi Shastri (Screaming over the noise): "LOOK AT THAT! LOOK AT THE STANDS! The Gujju Titans have unfurled a masterpiece! A massive Tifo of their Captain! The atmosphere is electric! Aarav Pathak walks out to the center of his colosseum! This is spine-tingling stuff!"
Ball 4: Aarav took his guard. He looked at the Tifo, a small smirk playing on his lips. He looked at the scoreboard. He looked at Chahar. The mandate from the dressing room was clear: Hit the ball out of the orbit.
Chahar ran in, trying to bowl a tight line on the pads to cramp the new batsman. Aarav didn't take a sighter. He didn't defend. He stayed deep in his crease, utilized his incredibly strong wrists, and whipped the ball with terrifying power. He didn't just clear the boundary; he sent the ball soaring deep into the stands over deep square leg, directly into the hands of the roaring crowd!
SIX!
Harsha Bhogle (Voice cracking): "HE HAS HIT IT OUT OF THE ORBIT! FIRST BALL! What a welcome! On the pads, and Aarav Pathak uses pure wrist power to dispatch it into the night sky! This team is playing a different brand of cricket! They are not defending; they are destroying!"
Ball 5: Chahar, completely shell-shocked by the first-ball assault, dragged his length back. Aarav defended it solidly, offering a dead bat. Dot.
Ball 6: Chahar bowled a tight yorker. Aarav dug it out to mid-on. Dot.

Sanjay Manjrekar: "14 runs and a wicket from that over. But the sheer aggression! Everyone in this Gujarat Titans lineup is walking out with the sole intention of hitting the ball out of the park. It's an intimidating, unforgiving philosophy, and right now, the Chennai Super Kings have absolutely no answers to it."

With 45 runs already wiped off the 142-run target in just three overs, MS Dhoni needed to try something different. The seasoned pacers had been taken to the cleaners. He turned to youth, throwing the ball to the young right-arm fast-medium bowler, Rajvardhan Hangargekar.
Sanjay Manjrekar: "A big moment for young Hangargekar. Making his debut on this massive stage, against an incredibly aggressive top order. He has pace, but accuracy is going to be the key. Abhishek Sharma is on strike, and he is seeing the ball like a football."
Over 4: RS Hangargekar to Abhishek Sharma
Ball 1: The Welcome Hangargekar steamed in, eager to impress his captain. He bowled a fast, back-of-a-length delivery. Abhishek Sharma didn't care about the bowler's debut nerves. He cleared his front leg, picked the length instantly, and absolutely deposited it over the mid-wicket boundary. SIX!
Ravi Shastri: "BANG! Welcome to the IPL, young man! Abhishek Sharma continues his violent streak! He just stands and delivers! That brings up the 50 for the Gujarat Titans in just 3.1 overs!"
Ball 2: Hangargekar looked rattled for a second, but Dhoni clapped from behind the stumps, signaling him to pitch it up. The young pacer ran in again. This time, he nailed a searing, full delivery that angled in sharply at the toes. Abhishek, still in the mindset to attack, tried to whip it across the line. He missed it entirely. CRASH. The middle and leg stumps were uprooted.
Harsha Bhogle: "BOWLED HIM! What a brilliant comeback! Hangargekar strikes back immediately! He goes full, finds the gap, and knocks over the dangerous Abhishek Sharma! The young bowler lets out a massive roar! CSK have a desperately needed breakthrough!"
Abhishek Sharma b Hangargekar 31 Score: GT 51/2
Ball 3: The fall of the wicket brought the Impact Player, Sai Sudharsan, to the crease. Subbed in for Jason Behrendorff, the elegant left-hander was here to provide stability while Aarav did the heavy lifting. Hangargekar bowled a tighter line on off-stump. Sudharsan tapped it softly to point with soft hands and jogged across. 1 Run.
Ball 4: Aarav Pathak on strike. He pushed a length ball gently to mid-on, content to rotate the strike. 1 Run.
Ball 5: Sudharsan worked a delivery off his hips to deep square leg. 1 Run.
Ball 6: Aarav finished the eventful over with another calm push to deep cover for a single. 1 Run.
End of Over 4.Score: GT 55/2. Runs from Over: 10 (6, W, 1, 1, 1, 1).
Ravi Shastri: "A very eventful over! A massive six, a brilliant wicket, and then four sensible singles. Aarav and Sudharsan realize they don't need to win this in ten overs. The required rate is virtually non-existent."
With the target shrinking rapidly, Aarav Pathak decided to shift gears. He didn't slog wildly; he dismantled the Chennai bowlers with clinical, punishing strokes.
He took apart Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja in the middle overs, using his crease perfectly to manipulate the field. In the 9th over, facing Mitchell Santner, Aarav stepped down the track and launched him over long-off for a colossal maximum.
Harsha Bhogle: "And that brings up the half-century for the Captain! 50 off just 23 deliveries! What a knock this has been! He walked in when Gill fell, took charge, and has absolutely deflated the Chennai Super Kings. Aarav Pathak is making a complete mockery of this chase!"
The crowd chanted "SETH! SETH! SETH!" as Aarti and the Gujju Titans in the East Stand beat their drums in a triumphant, rolling rhythm. Aarav simply raised his bat to his dugout, chewing his gum, his eyes fixed on the remaining total.
Over 10: Mitchell Santner to Aarav Pathak
With just over 30 runs required, Aarav wanted to finish the game quickly. He was batting on a scintillating 57. Santner tossed the ball up wide outside off, significantly slowing the pace down.
Aarav reached for it, trying to slice it inside-out over deep extra cover. But the slowness of the pitch and the clever flight did the trick. He didn't get to the pitch of the ball. It took the outer half of the bat and lobbed straight to long-off. Ruturaj Gaikwad settled underneath and took a safe catch.
Sanjay Manjrekar: "Caught in the deep! Santner gets the big fish! Aarav Pathak goes for 57! He wanted to finish it in a hurry, but the clever, loopy spin deceives him. It's a bit of an anti-climax for the crowd, but what a phenomenal captain's knock!"
Aarav Pathak c Gaikwad b Santner 57 (26) Score: GT 115/3
As Aarav walked back to a massive standing ovation, David Miller strolled out to join Heinrich Klaasen (who had replaced Sudharsan a few overs prior).
If Chennai thought the pressure was off with Aarav gone, they were brutally mistaken. The two South African powerhouses walked into the middle like men who had double-parked their cars outside the stadium.
They didn't bother rotating the strike. They dealt strictly in boundaries.
Over 12: Klaasen pulled Hangargekar for two brutal fours through mid-wicket.
Over 13: Miller stepped out and launched Ravindra Jadeja directly into the upper tier for a massive six.
The target evaporated.
Over 13.4: Mitchell Santner to Heinrich Klaasen With just 2 runs needed to win, Santner fired it in flat. Klaasen went back in his crease, made room, and slapped it ferociously through the covers. The ball rocketed to the boundary rope, ending the match in a flash of blue and gold. FOUR!
Ravi Shastri (Booming): "AND THAT IS IT! Heinrich Klaasen finishes it off with a boundary! The Gujarat Titans win the opening match of the TATA IPL 2023 by 6 wickets! It was a cakewalk! A complete and utter demolition of the Chennai Super Kings here in Patra City!"
Harsha Bhogle: "They chased down 142 in just 13.4 overs! When Aarav got out, it seemed like simple work, but Klaasen and Miller made it look even simpler! They strolled to the target with pure, unadulterated muscle!"
The Gujarat Titans dugout spilled onto the field, high-fiving and hugging. Aarav Pathak walked out, tossing his towel over his shoulder, and shook hands with a wryly smiling MS Dhoni. "Too quick for us today, Aarav," Dhoni murmured, patting Aarav's back. "Just getting started, Mahi bhai," Aarav smiled respectfully.
The stadium lights flickered, and the post-match fireworks lit up the Patra City skyline. The 'Gujju Titans' in the stands unfurled their massive Tifo one last time, while Aarti's drum squad played a victorious, thumping rhythm.
Player of the Match:Aarav Pathak (57 runs off 26 balls & 2 Wickets).
As Aarav lifted his first Man of the Match trophy of the season, the message sent to the rest of the franchises was loud and terrifyingly clear. The Defending Champions hadn't just returned to protect their crown; they had returned to annihilate anyone who stood in their way. The 12-man era of the IPL belonged to the Titans.
