Chapter 708 - Chapter 708 The Fading Light

A sudden downpour drew a curtain over tonight's slaughter.

The sound of rain mingled with the sharp wail of police sirens. The heavy rain washed away the dust blown into Yorknew City from the Gordeau Desert, but it could not wash away the blood surrounding the Cemetery Building.

There was too much.

The bodies of nearly three thousand mafia members lay strewn across the streets in all directions.

Blood mixed with rainwater formed rivulets, and the exploded, burning cars were reduced to charred husks.

Law expanded his Domain, holding up an invisible large umbrella to shield Ellie and the others from the wind and rain.

Kurapika did not take shelter under Law's umbrella. Holding his clansmen's Scarlet Eyes, he walked silently through the heavy rain.

The rain fell on him, rolling from the top of his head down to the hem of his clothes, turning into diluted beads of blood that fell to the ground, merging with the rainwater on the street.

The blood on his hair and face was gradually washed away, but even so, it could not wash the blood from his hands.

Law's group simply watched as Kurapika walked alone ahead of them.

According to Kurapika, he needed to cool off, and his method of cooling off was to stand in the rain.

Left with no choice, Law could only follow behind Kurapika.

And so, the group left the Cemetery Building, the eye of the storm, and returned to the hotel, as if nothing had happened tonight.

Kurapika returned to his room, soaked to the bone. He placed the Scarlet Eyes on the coffee table, then sat on the sofa, clasping his hands and resting his chin on them, staring expressionlessly at the Scarlet Eyes.

The lights in the room were not very bright, but the wooden stand holding the glass container for the Scarlet Eyes had a small light inside, casting a faint glow over the eyes.

That faint glow silently reflected in Kurapika's own eyes.

Faintly, it seemed as if numerous figures turned into points of light, shrinking deep into his pupils.

Finally, that light gradually faded into the distance, then slowly settled into darkness.

Law came to Kurapika's side and, without asking for permission, placed a hand on his shoulder, extracting all the rainwater and bloodstains from his body.

Kurapika, however, showed no reaction, merely staring quietly at the Scarlet Eyes.

Law glanced at Kurapika, then entered the bathroom, disposing of the extracted rainwater and blood.

Afterwards, he didn't leave immediately but took out his phone and sent messages to Machi, Uvogin, and Nobunaga separately.

The messages briefly outlined the events of the night, with the key point being the annihilation of the Phantom Troupe.

Uvogin and Nobunaga did not reply… it was unknown if they had seen the messages.

After a moment, Machi replied.

Law read the content of the message and, without the slightest hesitation, typed out a single word in reply before walking out of the bathroom.

"I'm going out for a bit."

After coming out of the bathroom, Law informed Kurapika, who still showed no reaction.

Seeing this, Law opened the door and left.

In the dining room, Ellie and Salin were having their midnight snack, while Stargie was in the living room watching a soap opera.

Law informed them briefly, then left the presidential suite, took the elevator to the first floor, exited the hotel, and hailed a taxi.

"Sir, are you sure you want to go to Coconut Road?"

The driver was a young man. He looked at Law through the rearview mirror, his tone cautious.

Coconut Road was the border intersection between the Gordeau Desert and the entrance to Yorknew City, a deserted area.

At this hour, coupled with the heavy rain, to be honest, the young driver was a bit scared.

It wasn't that he had read too many news stories about robbery and murder… he just genuinely felt nervous. If something really happened, there would be absolutely no one to help.

"Yes." Law could see the driver's concern but couldn't be bothered to explain. He just turned his head to watch the water droplets continuously sliding down the window.

The young driver felt bitter inside. He really wanted to refuse the fare but was afraid of getting a complaint.

Thinking of his newborn daughter, he gritted his teeth, released the handbrake, and stepped on the accelerator.

The car slowly pulled out, accelerating once it reached the main road.

He thought to himself that he would head straight home after this fare.

The journey was silent, and the car was very quiet.

The young driver, feeling uneasy, turned on the radio.

A slight burst of static passed, followed by a calm, clear female voice.

It was a news report about the incident at the Cemetery Building tonight.

The young driver wasn't interested in this news and was about to change the station when he heard Law's voice: "Leave it on this."

"Uh, okay." The young driver's hand twitched, and he quickly put it back on the wheel to focus on driving.

Law listened to the news on the radio, picking up some key information.

There were only four survivors of the Cemetery Building incident. The auction items had been looted clean. The surveillance footage from the building and the surrounding area had been erased.

"Four people..." Law watched the streaking lights of the rain outside the window.

Although it wasn't worth paying much attention to, the number of people who escaped was probably more than four.

'No matter. The Ten Dons were most likely dead. By now, the mafia members from the ten districts of the six continents were probably busy scrambling for territory. They wouldn't care about the mess at the Cemetery Building.'

The taxi drove out of the city limits. The road began to open up, and the number of streetlights decreased.

The poor lighting conditions forced the car to slow down a bit.

There were almost no other cars on the road, giving one an inevitable sense of chill.

As they neared the destination, the driver's heartbeat gradually quickened.

They finally arrived. The driver thoughtfully found a sheltered spot out of the rain before stopping.

The surroundings were empty, with almost no lights visible. Yet, the sound of wind and rain outside offered a sliver of comfort.

The driver looked down at the meter, his lips moving slightly as he forced a smile and turned to look at the back seat. His expression suddenly froze.

'Where is he...?'

All he saw were a few banknotes lying on the back seat.

The muscles on the driver's face twitched several times.

He hadn't heard the car door open.

'Could it be...?'

Suddenly, a chill ran rampant through his body.

The driver didn't bother collecting the money. He stepped on the accelerator, turned the car around, and hurriedly left the place.

He didn't notice that in the desert area in the distance, a light was glowing within the curtain of rain, gradually moving away.

Law, with Light Moss attached to his body, headed towards the direction of the red pillar rock area in the desert.

The Gordeau Desert had many tall, red, pillar-shaped rocks.

The place Law was heading to was the summit of one of them.

Soon, Law randomly picked one, climbed to the mountaintop, dug a few pits right there, and buried the bodies of Chrollo and the others inside.

Afterwards, using materials found on site, he carved tombstones, engraved the names on them, and placed them in front of the graves.

After finishing this, Law noted the location, then left, walking back to the city on foot before taking another taxi back to the hotel.

The request to bury Chrollo and the others was made by Machi. Law did not refuse and took care of it for her immediately.

However, among the buried, there were no Feitan or Hisoka.

Burying them and handling their funeral affairs was out of the question. On the contrary, Law intended to sell their bodies for money.

Even though he wasn't short on money, this was something that should still be done.

After all, they were people who wanted his life, so why would Law show any mercy or hold back?

When he returned to the hotel, Law found Kurapika had collapsed on the sofa… he had developed a fever.

Given Kurapika's physical condition, he shouldn't get a fever just from being caught in the rain.

It was likely due to mental strain and the effect of the Scarlet Eyes.

Law took off Kurapika's outer clothes, then carried him to the bed and tucked him in.

The next afternoon, Gon and Killua came to the presidential suite.

The two entered the room, saw the Scarlet Eyes on the coffee table, and also saw Kurapika lying in bed.

Last night, when the incident at the Cemetery Building was unfolding, the two of them had still been in the antique street trying to figure out how to make money.
