# **TRUE PIECE**
## **Chapter 10: Willpower Beyond Density**
### **Center Sea Arc — Part 5 of 5**
Eullian Hound charged.
Chief Asia raised the revolver.
The barrel aligned with the center of Eullian's forehead.
His finger tightened.
Eullian should have dodged.
Chief Asia had spent the entire battle teaching him why dodging was predictable.
Pain directed movement.
Fear selected priorities.
Love created targets.
Experience turned every reasonable choice into a road ending beneath a gun.
So Eullian made an unreasonable choice.
He did not avoid the revolver.
He ran directly toward it.
Chief Asia fired.
Eullian moved his head after the muzzle flashed.
Not away from the bullet.
Toward Chief Asia's gun hand.
The shot tore through what remained of Eullian's right ear.
Blood crossed the air in a bright curve.
The bullet continued behind him.
Eullian's shoulder struck Chief Asia's extended arm.
The revolver moved three inches off line.
Chief Asia stepped backward to restore distance.
His damaged left sole slipped against the blood covering the bell platform.
Only half an inch.
Eullian needed less.
Chief Asia's free hand came upward.
Two fingers aimed for Eullian's wounded throat.
His knee rose toward the open hole below Eullian's ribs.
His body prepared three answers to one charge.
Eullian ignored all three.
He planted his ruined right leg.
The torn muscles nearly collapsed.
He forced them to remain.
Chief Asia's eyes widened.
Not from fear.
From encountering a result his experience had assigned too low a probability.
Eullian pulled his fist back.
Chief Asia's fingers reached his throat.
Eullian punched him in the face.
The mountain forgot how to remain quiet.
Chief Asia's head turned first.
Then his shoulders.
Then the rest of his body learned what had happened.
The gunfighter left the Height Bell platform horizontally.
He passed through its outer railing without slowing.
Wood became splinters around him.
He crossed the first rope bridge.
Its center vanished.
He struck a giant dwelling carved into the mountainside.
The front room ceased to have a front.
Stone blocks, enormous furniture, cooking tools, and lengths of white cloth erupted from the opposite wall.
Chief Asia continued through them.
He struck a second building.
Then a third.
Then five more too quickly for anyone to count accurately.
Each impact produced a separate thunderclap.
Roof tiles rose into the sky.
Bridges snapped.
Windows burst outward in glittering sheets.
A water tower exploded around him, briefly hiding his body inside a sphere of sunlight and silver rain.
He came out of the water still moving.
Across half the Height settlement.
Through storehouses.
Through an empty school carved into red stone.
Through the upper wall of a council chamber large enough to hold fifty giants.
The chamber's enormous doors flew from their hinges and crossed the town like falling cliffs.
Chief Asia struck the final building near the northern ridge.
The entire structure leaned backward.
For one breath, it remained standing.
Then it collapsed around him.
Dust climbed into the open sky.
It did not form one cloud.
It formed a continent.
Runa Above-Storm stared across the destruction.
Her mouth hung open.
Vara Above-Bell, trapped beside the lower bridge with one leg broken beneath the knee, slowly raised her face.
Tallen Vey remained beneath the Height Bell.
His shattered observation lens reflected the distant ruin in three separate pieces.
Mira Cale lay across the damaged stairs, one shoulder shot and one wrist broken.
Her pencil had stopped against the Open Ledger.
Hijo Albino remained on his knees beside the bell platform.
Blood ran from his thigh, shoulder, fingers, and mouth.
None of them spoke.
Eullian's fist remained extended.
Blood dripped from every knuckle.
His entire arm trembled.
The punch had not healed him.
It had not returned the blood already lost.
It had not removed bullets, repaired muscle, straightened bone, or filled his damaged lungs.
For one impossible second, his refusal had persuaded his body to perform an action it no longer possessed the resources to complete.
Now the cost arrived.
His right leg folded.
Eullian caught himself against the broken railing.
He laughed once.
It sounded wet.
"I told him."
Mira's pencil moved again.
She wrote only three words.
**Direct attack succeeded.**
Then another line beneath it.
**Because he stopped expecting simplicity.**
Hijo looked toward the ruins across the settlement.
"Do not assume victory."
Eullian wiped blood from his mouth.
"He crossed half the town."
"That is distance."
"He went through buildings."
"That is damage."
"He is still alive," Tallen said.
Eullian's smile faded.
The northern ruins moved.
Not much.
One stone shifted.
Then another.
Dust poured from a dark opening between collapsed walls.
A hand emerged.
Bare.
Bloodied.
Steady.
Chief Asia pushed a stone slab off his back.
It weighed enough to crush an ordinary house.
It struck the ruins beside him and split.
Chief Asia rose.
His dark green shirt had been torn from the right shoulder to the waist.
Blood covered the lower half of his face.
His nose leaned slightly left.
One eye had swollen.
Three teeth were missing.
A deep indentation crossed his chest where Eullian's fist had driven his own arm against his ribs.
His left shoulder hung lower than the right.
One knee trembled.
His revolver was gone.
The short pistol remained beneath his arm.
His folded rifle had broken during the flight.
Chief Asia stood among the destroyed buildings without losing the stillness surrounding him.
If anything, the stillness became heavier.
Before, his calm had resembled a locked door.
Now it resembled the room behind that door.
Chief Asia touched his face.
His fingers came away red.
He looked at the blood.
Then toward Eullian.
His widened eye returned to its usual shape.
"You struck me."
Eullian used the broken railing to stand.
"Yes."
"Directly."
"Yes."
"Without using your crew."
"They already helped."
Chief Asia examined the distance separating them.
Half the settlement.
Too far for an ordinary conversation.
His voice still reached Eullian clearly.
"You allowed me to build seven layers of expectation."
Eullian breathed shallowly.
"I didn't count."
"Then you abandoned all seven."
"I punched you."
"Yes."
Chief Asia looked toward the rubble behind him.
"You are offensively simple."
Eullian smiled through the blood.
"Thank you."
"That was not admiration."
"It still sounded nice."
Chief Asia turned.
Something pink rested inside the collapsed remains of the final building.
Penny.
The porcelain piggy bank lay on its side between two broken beams.
Chief Asia had placed her behind the stone barrier before the fight.
Eullian's punch had sent him through the barrier.
Through half the settlement.
Into the building where Penny had landed after the impact wave.
Chief Asia stepped toward her.
His limp lasted only one stride.
Then he adjusted how his weight traveled through the injured knee.
The limp disappeared.
Not because the pain had lessened.
Because he had found a more efficient way to carry it.
He knelt beside Penny.
Dust covered her painted eyes.
The golden flower beside her ear had been scratched.
The bright metal repair along her stomach remained intact.
Chief Asia lifted her with both hands.
Coins moved inside.
**Clink.**
Not the usual soft whisper.
A sharper sound.
Chief Asia's fingers stopped.
A crack crossed Penny's left side.
Thin.
Barely visible.
It began beneath the painted ear and traveled toward the coin slot.
Chief Asia stared at it.
The mountain wind passed through the settlement.
It carried dust.
Burned cloth.
Blood.
The smell of fractured stone.
Chief Asia did not blink.
Eullian watched his emotions from across the town.
Concern.
Fear.
Recognition.
Then something Chief Asia had not shown even while killing his own subordinate.
Personal pain.
The crack had not emptied Penny.
It had not destroyed her.
It had simply proven she could be hurt.
Chief Asia's fingers tightened around the porcelain body.
"Penny."
His voice did not travel unnaturally this time.
It remained quiet.
Close.
Almost human.
He rubbed one thumb beside the fracture.
The crack did not disappear.
Chief Asia looked toward Eullian.
His aura did not explode.
There was no visible wave.
No sudden wind.
No transformation.
Nothing easy enough to describe as power increasing.
Instead, the entire settlement became aware of him.
Loose stones stopped rolling.
The Height Tribe ceased shouting.
The wounded forgot to groan.
Even the Still Bell beneath the city delayed its next false note.
Chief Asia had controlled every emotion until now.
Not removed them.
Placed them where opponents could see what he wanted.
Penny's crack destroyed that arrangement.
The feeling surrounding him had no false direction.
No bait.
No carefully displayed concern leading toward a prepared trap.
Only rage.
Pure enough to simplify a man who had built his life upon complexity.
Eullian felt it.
For the first time, Chief Asia's emotion did not require interpretation.
It pressed across the town like invisible density.
Not magical weight.
The certainty that something catastrophic had decided to stand.
Chief Asia carefully placed Penny inside the remains of the stone room.
He moved broken cloth around her.
One piece beneath the crack.
One above.
A nest for porcelain.
Then he stood.
His injured body remained unchanged.
Blood still ran.
His shoulder still sagged.
His ribs were still damaged.
Yet the mountain seemed to contain less space around him.
"You can hurt me," Chief Asia said.
His voice crossed every broken bridge.
Every ruined home.
Every witness.
"But never hurt my Penny."
Eullian stared.
"You brought her to a battle."
Chief Asia's expression became empty.
"That does not make the damage acceptable."
"No."
Eullian stepped away from the railing.
His body almost fell with him.
He forced his leg beneath his weight.
Chief Asia raised one hand.
Black-silver liquid surfaced around his wrist.
Not flowing from a vial.
Not poured across his skin.
It rose from beneath it.
Thin lines entered his fingers.
His veins.
The damaged bones inside his shoulder.
The Liquid did not repair them.
It learned how to operate around them.
Mira's pencil began moving faster.
"He's using it."
Hijo tried to rise.
His wounded thigh refused.
"Tallen."
"I see."
"What changes?"
Tallen lifted the broken frame of his observation lens.
Chief Asia's body looked the same through every fragment.
"No physical transformation."
Mira watched the air around the gunfighter.
"What about the environment?"
"Nothing visible."
Chief Asia drew the short black pistol.
The last usable weapon on his body.
Its metal surface reflected Penny's damaged shape behind him.
"I'll show you the true power of Devil Liquids."
Captain Cube screamed from the evacuation basket below.
"No!"
Chief Asia looked toward Eullian.
Not at Hijo.
Not Mira.
Not Tallen.
Eullian alone.
Then Chief Asia said:
"How they truly evolve."
The silver-black lines beneath his skin changed.
They had previously formed tools.
Paths.
Tiny fingers.
Symbols suggesting assigned skills.
Now they opened.
Not outward.
Possibility opened around them.
The short pistol remained a short pistol.
Chief Asia remained Chief Asia.
But every action he might perform with the weapon became visible to reality at once.
Aiming.
Not aiming.
Firing early.
Firing late.
Ricocheting.
Missing deliberately.
Curving.
Stopping.
Repeating.
Arriving before the trigger.
Correcting after failure.
Passing through matter.
Striking an action rather than a body.
The Skill-Skill Devil Liquid did not simply make one thing better at a task anymore.
It evolved by recognizing that every task contained countless possible methods.
Chief Asia had opened all of them.
The air around his pistol looked ordinary.
That was what made it unfair.
Mira stared at the blank space surrounding him.
"What did he change?"
Captain Cube pressed both hands against the sides of his head.
"Flexible Types don't transform more."
His voices overlapped.
"They include more."
Hijo's pale eyes narrowed.
"Possibilities."
Captain Cube laughed and cried at the same time.
"He no longer assigns one skill."
Chief Asia's finger rested against the trigger.
"He lets the Liquid find whichever skill produces the result."
Tallen looked toward Eullian.
"Then every failed shot can become a different successful shot."
"Yes," Captain Cube whispered.
Mira gripped the Ledger.
"The stamina cost."
"Everything."
Chief Asia's breathing remained measured.
For now.
Tallen saw a tremor in the gunfighter's trigger finger.
Small.
Fast.
The Devil Liquid was consuming him before he fired.
Chief Asia did not care.
Penny had been cracked.
Economy had ended.
He aimed.
Eullian lowered his body.
Chief Asia fired.
No bullet exited the barrel.
Eullian waited.
Nothing crossed the town.
No muzzle flash.
No smoke.
No displaced air.
Tallen's eye widened.
"Move!"
Eullian jumped left.
The bullet appeared inside the place he had been.
Not entered.
Appeared.
Stone vanished in a finger-wide line extending through the entire Height Bell platform.
The shot continued through three giant homes and disappeared into the mountain.
The sound arrived afterward.
One compact crack.
Eullian landed badly.
His wounded leg tore farther.
He nearly fell.
"What was that?" he shouted.
Mira watched the missing line through the buildings.
"It didn't travel through normal space."
Chief Asia fired again.
The muzzle remained silent.
Eullian moved before anything appeared.
A bullet formed beside his right temple.
He bent backward.
The round passed close enough to remove another strip from his ear.
It vanished.
Reappeared behind his knee.
Eullian twisted.
The bullet entered his coat instead of his leg.
It vanished again.
Eullian felt danger beneath his tongue.
He dropped.
The round emerged from his open mouth and crossed between his teeth without touching them.
Then it entered the stone behind him.
Silence.
Followed by three gunshots arriving together.
Tallen's hands closed around the broken parts of his weapon.
"He fired into the intervals."
Mira looked toward him.
"Between positions?"
"Between everything."
Chief Asia fired again.
Eullian ran.
The bullet did not chase him.
It existed between each completed movement.
Between foot lifting and foot landing.
Between balance and falling.
Between inhaling and exhaling.
Between seeing danger and choosing a response.
Every transition became a doorway.
The bullet opened inside it.
Eullian moved his head.
A red line appeared across his cheek.
He changed direction.
The bullet formed near his ribs.
He twisted.
It cut through his shirt.
He jumped.
The shot appeared beneath his foot.
The explosion threw him higher.
Chief Asia fired a second Interstice Bullet.
Then a third.
Eullian crossed the broken settlement while shots appeared inside every unfinished action.
One emerged between the opening and closing of his fist.
The bullet tore through his palm.
Another appeared during his heartbeat.
Pain struck inside his chest.
No wound opened.
The round had not hit his heart.
It had struck the physical contraction beginning around it.
His rhythm broke.
Eullian stumbled.
Chief Asia fired again.
Hijo threw white threads across the town.
The threads formed thousands of lines around Eullian.
Not barriers.
Indicators.
The first bullet appeared between two threads.
Both snapped outward.
The movement revealed it.
"Above!" Hijo shouted.
Eullian ducked.
The bullet passed through his hair.
Mira watched Chief Asia's stance.
"He still selects a purpose before firing."
"What purpose?" Tallen asked.
"Kill Eullian."
"That is too broad."
"No. The Liquid is choosing methods inside that purpose."
Tallen looked toward Eullian.
"Then the bullet doesn't have a fixed path."
"No."
"Or fixed timing."
"No."
"Or one physical state."
"No."
Chief Asia fired.
The bullet appeared as a line of pressure rather than metal.
It struck Eullian's left side.
His body folded.
The round became solid only after entering him.
It exited his shoulder in a burst of blood.
Eullian hit the roof of a giant home.
The stone cracked beneath him.
Chief Asia began walking.
Each step exact.
His injured knee should have slowed him.
The Devil Liquid made his movement skilled at using damage as momentum.
His falling shoulder became part of his stride.
His cracked ribs compressed only between breaths.
The power did not remove weakness.
It opened possibilities where weakness became useful.
Chief Asia fired again.
Eullian rolled from the roof.
The bullet entered the space between roof and air.
It split into six possible shots.
Only one needed to be real.
Eullian saw nothing.
He felt the pressure of intention around him.
Everywhere.
Not Chief Asia's emotions.
The Liquid's assigned purpose.
Kill.
The six possibilities narrowed.
Eullian threw himself downward.
Five bullets vanished because their outcomes became unnecessary.
The sixth appeared above him.
He twisted in the air.
It passed through the loose fabric beneath his arm.
Eullian landed.
His eyes widened.
Chief Asia stopped walking.
Mira saw it too.
"He dodged."
Tallen's breath caught against his broken ribs.
"Before the bullet chose."
Eullian stared toward Chief Asia.
He did not know how to explain what he had done.
He had stopped searching for the bullet.
Stopped looking for trajectory.
Stopped trying to understand which rule Chief Asia had changed.
The power could select any path.
Any timing.
Any physical possibility.
But the purpose remained.
Before every bullet chose how to kill him—
it had to decide that he was still where death could reach.
Eullian felt that decision.
Not as emotion.
As pressure.
A narrowing.
Thousands of possibilities becoming one intention.
The world leaning slightly toward his end.
He moved before the lean finished.
Chief Asia fired twice.
Eullian stepped between them.
The first round appeared ahead.
He did not avoid it.
He stopped.
The bullet had chosen a future based on continued movement.
It emerged too far away.
The second appeared behind him.
Eullian dropped backward before its possibility hardened.
It passed above his chest.
Chief Asia fired five times.
Eullian moved.
Stopped.
Turned.
Changed his mind before his body completed the action.
Fell deliberately.
Pushed from a wall.
Refused the safest direction.
Each Interstice Bullet found fewer completed transitions to inhabit.
One still struck his thigh.
Another crossed his shoulder.
A third entered the stone beside his spine.
Nearly impossible did not mean impossible.
Eullian had already spent the previous battle learning how Chief Asia constructed certainty.
Now Chief Asia's evolved power constructed too much of it.
Every possible skill opened around one purpose.
That purpose became large enough for Eullian to feel.
Chief Asia's expression remained controlled.
His breathing did not.
Each shot pulled something from him.
Stamina.
Heat.
Moisture.
Perhaps time.
Gray spread farther through his hair.
His injured shoulder darkened beneath the skin.
Blood ran from both nostrils.
His hands remained steady.
Penny's crack remained behind him.
Chief Asia fired again.
Eullian avoided the first possibility.
Then the second.
Then the bullet opened between his pain and his reaction to it.
It struck his stomach.
He crossed the street and entered a stone wall.
The building shuddered.
Eullian fell from the new crater.
His knees hit the ground.
Chief Asia approached.
"You adapted."
Eullian tried to breathe.
Blood came instead.
"Yes."
"Enough to matter."
Eullian raised his head.
Chief Asia stood at the far end of the ruined street.
The distance should have protected neither of them.
"You cannot adapt enough to win."
"Maybe."
"You have less blood."
"Yes."
"Less functioning muscle."
"Yes."
"Less time."
"Yes."
Chief Asia's aura deepened.
Not mystical pressure.
The accumulated result of twenty-four thousand seven hundred fifty-four deaths standing behind one decision.
"Then what remains?"
Eullian placed his torn palm against the ground.
"Me."
Chief Asia's expression did not change.
"That answer contains no strategy."
"I already tried strategy."
"You were poor at it."
"Yes."
Eullian rose.
Chief Asia fired.
The bullet entered the interval between standing and balance.
Eullian allowed himself to fall forward.
The round appeared behind his spine and missed.
He caught himself with one hand.
Pushed forward.
Ran.
Chief Asia fired again.
Eullian turned his shoulder.
The shot appeared beside his neck.
Missed.
Eullian continued.
Each step left blood.
Each breath sounded smaller.
Chief Asia watched him cross the broken town.
The gunfighter no longer underestimated direct action.
He had learned from the first punch.
His evolved Liquid opened thousands of answers.
Eullian adapted enough to survive several.
Not all.
A bullet appeared inside his charge.
It entered above his hip.
Another struck his upper arm.
A third tore a channel across his ribs.
Eullian continued.
Chief Asia stepped backward.
One pace.
The first retreat he had made from Eullian without using the movement as bait.
Eullian smiled.
Chief Asia saw it.
"You interpret one step as fear."
"No."
"Then why smile?"
"You moved."
Chief Asia aimed at his heart.
The Skill-Skill Liquid spread from his wrist into the pistol.
Not a thin line now.
Every black-silver branch inside him converged upon the weapon.
Chief Asia's body did not transform.
The world around the short pistol dimmed.
Not darker.
Less committed to continuing normally.
Tallen struggled upright.
"He's gathering the remaining bullets."
Mira stared.
"What remaining bullets?"
"All of them."
Spent casings moved throughout the settlement.
Bullets lodged in stone began trembling.
Metal fragments inside Eullian's body vibrated.
The rounds that had missed.
The rounds that had struck buildings.
The round caught by Hijo's threads.
The bullets fired during the first battle.
Every piece of ammunition Chief Asia had used across the mountain responded to the Skill-Skill Liquid.
They rose.
Hundreds of deformed pieces of lead and steel pulled free from walls.
Some carried dust.
Some carried blood.
One emerged from the broken bridge beneath Vara.
Another tore itself from Tallen's ruined weapon.
Two left Hijo's body.
He gasped as blood followed.
A flattened round came out of Mira's shoulder.
She screamed.
The bullets flew toward Chief Asia.
Not through the air.
Through opened possibilities.
They appeared around the pistol in a rotating field.
Every previous task remained inside them.
Correct failure.
Arrive early.
Use concern.
Exploit pain.
Curve.
Return.
Strike between actions.
Find weakness.
Create sequence.
Chief Asia's entire lifetime of gun skill had not been stored in the metal.
But every skill assigned during this battle had.
Now the Devil Liquid gathered them.
The possibilities compressed.
One bullet began forming inside the chamber.
Larger than an ordinary round.
Smaller than the power surrounding it.
Its surface carried no reflection.
Images moved across it instead.
Every direction Eullian could dodge.
Every wound already inside him.
Every person he would turn to protect.
Every future position.
Every physical law flexible enough to betray him.
Chief Asia gripped the pistol with both hands.
His damaged shoulder cracked audibly.
Blood ran from his eyes.
His legs shook.
The short pistol was not built to contain the pressure.
Its frame split around his fingers.
Chief Asia held it together.
Penny rested behind him.
The crack along her side gleamed in the sunlight.
Chief Asia looked at Eullian.
"Final Bullet."
The settlement bent toward the barrel.
Not buildings.
Not stone.
Possibility.
Every unfinished action within a massive radius seemed to hesitate, waiting to learn whether the bullet would require it.
Hijo attempted to raise his threads.
They fell.
Mira pushed herself upright.
Her legs failed.
Tallen searched for ammunition.
His weapon remained broken.
Vara roared from below.
Too far.
Runa ran toward Eullian.
Vara caught her before she crossed the final bridge.
"No!"
"He'll die!"
"Yes!"
"Then let me go!"
"No!"
Eullian stood alone in the ruined street.
Again.
But not isolated.
Hijo had taught him that every action possessed a sequence.
Mira had discovered the cost.
Tallen had shown him that a lie became a promise when someone grew strong enough to stand behind it.
The Height Tribe had taught him to shout an inside name against a world trying to choose it first.
Eullian's body remained broken.
No transformation changed his shape.
His hair did not rise.
His muscles did not expand.
No armor appeared.
Nothing entered him from outside.
Instead, the area surrounding Eullian changed.
The sunlight nearest his body took on a faint red tint.
Not bright.
Not fire.
A suggestion of iron seen beneath skin.
Dust lifted from the ground and stopped.
Blood falling from his fingertips slowed before striking the stone.
The red deepened around one fist.
The color looked heavy.
Dense.
As though every refusal Eullian had carried had been hammered into metal without changing his flesh.
His dream.
Keep peace until death.
His fear.
Arriving too late.
His rage.
Seeing dreams turned into cages.
His crew.
Temporary until they were hurt.
Then permanent before anyone admitted it.
His will did not become larger.
It became denser.
So much decision occupying one action that the world around his fist had less room to behave normally.
Iron red covered his knuckles.
Not as a coating.
As reality remembering how hard refusal could become.
Chief Asia watched.
Surprise did not reach his face.
His eyes narrowed.
He had no record of this.
No report from Vask.
No measurement from Aldren.
No precedent from Captain Cube.
Eullian looked toward the pistol.
His voice crossed the silent town.
"I will punch you no matter what you use!"
Chief Asia fired.
The Final Bullet left the gun.
The world stopped.
Not metaphorically.
Across a massive radius, movement ceased.
The clouds froze above the mountain.
Dust remained suspended between ruined homes.
Falling stones stopped in the air.
Blood hung in droplets.
The Height Tribe could not complete their next breaths.
The false Still Bell beneath the city made no sound.
The Height Bell remained motionless despite the wind.
Every unfinished action had been seized by the Final Bullet's skill.
Its purpose required a world unable to interfere.
No sound existed.
No motion existed.
No room remained between cause and effect.
The bullet crossed the distance.
Slow enough to see.
Too fast for time to admit it had moved.
It contained every angle.
Every correction.
Every possible successful shot.
Eullian charged through the stopped world.
His body should not have moved.
The Final Bullet had arrested transition itself.
But Eullian's decision had already been made.
There was no interval between wanting to punch Chief Asia and attempting it.
No uncertainty.
No second possibility.
No future choice for the bullet to occupy.
Only one action packed beyond separation.
Punch him.
Eullian ran.
The stone beneath his first step shattered without producing sound.
His second step left a red impression in the air.
His third crossed the remaining street.
The Final Bullet reached him.
Eullian swung.
Iron-red fist met black possibility.
The collision produced nothing.
No explosion.
No shock wave.
No light.
For one absolute moment, the world contained no evidence that two impossible forces had met.
Eullian's fist remained against the bullet.
Chief Asia stood beyond it.
The short pistol broke further around his hands.
The bullet pressed into Eullian's knuckles.
Skin opened.
Bone cracked.
Iron-red pressure bent inward.
The Final Bullet did not move backward.
It contained the skill of every shot Chief Asia had required.
Eullian contained one promise.
He pushed.
Chief Asia's eyes sharpened.
The bullet pushed deeper.
Eullian's wrist fractured.
He continued.
Chief Asia's arms shook.
The Devil Liquid consumed the last usable stamina inside him.
Gray spread through both sides of his hair.
Blood streamed down his neck.
He forced more possibilities into the bullet.
A path through Eullian's fist.
A result before impact.
A future where the punch had already failed.
A physical law where density surrendered to penetration.
The bullet gained each skill.
Eullian kept pushing.
"I…"
No sound existed.
Yet Chief Asia understood the movement of his mouth.
"…will…"
The red surrounding Eullian's fist darkened.
Not brighter.
Heavier.
"…punch…"
The bullet's surface changed.
One thin fracture appeared.
Chief Asia's eyes widened.
Not shock.
Surprise.
The clean, professional recognition of a result outside his expected range.
A second crack crossed the bullet.
Then ten.
Then hundreds.
The Final Bullet split.
The world restarted through the fracture.
Sound returned all at once.
The clash roared across the Center Sea.
Clouds tore apart above the mountain.
The Height Bell rang.
Not one note.
Thousands.
A different sound for every person hearing it.
The false Still Bell beneath the city shattered its own silence.
The Final Bullet broke into countless burning fragments.
They did not explode.
They fell.
Tiny pieces of black metal scattered across the street, glowing against the stone like dead stars.
Chief Asia stared at them.
For the first time in his life, every skill placed inside one bullet had failed together.
Eullian's fist kept going.
Chief Asia released the broken pistol.
His hands rose.
Too late.
The punch crossed the final distance so quickly no eye clearly witnessed it.
Tallen saw Eullian disappear from one position.
Mira saw Chief Asia's head begin turning.
Hijo saw the red pressure collapse into one point.
No one saw the entire strike.
Eullian shouted:
"I WILL PUNCH YOU NO MATTER WHAT!"
His fist struck Chief Asia in the face.
Nothing happened.
One second.
The mountain waited.
Chief Asia remained standing.
Eullian's fist remained against his cheek.
The gunfighter's eyes looked toward him.
Calm.
Bleeding.
Surprised.
Then the force arrived.
Chief Asia vanished.
The ground beneath him did not crack.
It cratered after he left.
The air between his body and the northern mountain became a tunnel of compressed cloud.
Chief Asia crossed the settlement.
Passed over Vara.
Passed over the white-clothed city.
Passed over the harbor.
Passed over the **Civic Mercy**.
He struck the highest mountain summit on the island.
The peak did not break.
It ceased to remain part of the mountain.
Stone, snow, ancient trees, and the upper quarter of the summit disappeared inside one expanding sphere of debris.
The peak became open sky.
Chief Asia emerged from the other side.
Still moving.
He crossed the circular Center Sea.
From the Height settlement, his body became a dark line.
Then a point.
Then a streak of reflected sunlight.
Then something resembling a star flying upward rather than falling.
Penny remained behind.
The porcelain piggy bank sat inside her cloth nest among the ruins.
The crack along her side did not widen.
Chief Asia disappeared beyond the clouds.
The sound of his departure reached the island last.
A deep, receding thunder that continued long after he could no longer be seen.
Eullian remained standing with his fist extended.
The iron-red color disappeared.
Reality resumed its ordinary shade.
His hand looked human again.
Broken.
Bleeding.
Several knuckles displaced.
His wrist bent wrong.
The muscles in his arm had torn from shoulder to forearm.
The Final Bullet had not vanished without consequence.
Fragments remained inside his fist.
His body remembered every wound Chief Asia had given him.
Now it remembered the cost of refusing all of them.
Eullian lowered his arm.
Pain arrived.
Not one pain.
All of them.
Every bullet hole.
Every fracture.
Every torn muscle.
Every reopened stitch.
Every impact against stone.
Every breath taken through damaged tissue.
His nerves reported the battle at once.
Eullian's knees folded.
He struck the street.
His hands failed to catch him.
His face stopped inches from the fallen fragments of the Final Bullet.
They looked like stars scattered across black stone.
Hijo attempted to move.
He collapsed.
Mira dragged herself forward with one arm.
Tallen tried to stand.
The bell frame supported him for half a second.
Then he dropped beside it.
Runa tore free from Vara and ran.
The ground shook beneath her steps.
She reached Eullian first.
Her enormous hand stopped above his body.
She was afraid to touch him.
"Ground man?"
Eullian did not move.
"Eullian?"
His fingers twitched.
Runa lowered one ear toward him.
A sound came from the blood beneath his face.
Small.
Broken.
"Told you."
Runa blinked.
Eullian rolled weakly onto his back.
The movement made him scream.
The scream turned into laughter.
Not loud.
Not joyful enough to erase anything.
His body remained ruined.
His crew remained injured.
The Height settlement remained half destroyed.
The mysterious island continued waiting below.
Aldren Vane remained somewhere beyond the four Hollow Currents.
Chief Asia might still be alive.
The Center Sea had not become safe.
None of that changed.
Eullian laughed anyway.
The sound traveled through the damaged town.
Mira heard it and closed her eyes.
Hijo lowered his forehead against the Height Bell's wooden frame.
Tallen stared at the broken stars covering the street.
Vara released a breath she had been holding since the Final Bullet fired.
Runa began laughing too.
Not because the battle had become funny.
Because Eullian's laughter proved the battle had not taken everything.
Other members of the Height Tribe joined.
Weakly.
Uneasily.
Some while crying.
Some while carrying their wounded.
The laughter did not make the destroyed buildings return.
It did not straighten Vara's leg.
It did not close Mira's shoulder.
It did not remove Hijo's bullets.
It did not repair Tallen's ribs or weapon.
It made everything slightly better.
Only slightly.
For that moment, slightly was enough.
