Chapter 6: The Weight of Shadows

The journey back was eerily quiet. The winding paths through the Scar seemed to stretch endlessly, the silence pressing in on Kael like a suffocating blanket. He was more aware of the Nexus now, its presence growing stronger with every step. It felt... heavier, as though it had begun to take root deeper within him. The whispers were louder, insistent, urging him to use more power.

"Kael," Lira's voice cut through the quiet. "Are you sure you're alright?"

Kael looked up, his eyes narrowing. She was staring at him with that unreadable expression, a mix of curiosity and suspicion. She hadn't asked about his reaction to the Riftshard—at least, not yet. But he could feel her watching him, waiting for something.

"I'm fine," he muttered, his voice rough. It was the same lie he'd told himself every day since the Nexus first bonded to him.

Lira didn't press further but kept glancing at him, her sharp instincts telling her there was something off. She had to know that the Nexus wasn't something he could easily control. They both had their secrets, and Kael had no intention of revealing his.

---

The Scar began to shift around them. The ground trembled lightly, sending a ripple through the air. Something was wrong. Kael stopped in his tracks, his senses prickling.

"What now?" Lira whispered, her hand on the hilt of her dagger, her gaze scanning the dark expanse ahead of them.

Before Kael could respond, the ground erupted. From the cracks in the earth, figures emerged, their movements too swift and fluid to be human. Riftspawn, but these were different. They were smaller, faster, and seemed to have adapted to the terrain. Their bodies shimmered with an unnatural light, casting jagged shadows across the ground.

Lira cursed under her breath. "Shit. We're surrounded."

Kael felt the Nexus stir, eager to act. Feed. Take control.

"No," Kael muttered to himself. He wasn't going to lose control, not here. Not now.

But the Riftspawn weren't waiting for him to make up his mind. They lunged, their sharp claws slashing through the air.

Lira was already moving. She darted forward with a speed Kael could barely follow, her daggers flashing as she took down the first wave of enemies. Her movements were fluid, like a deadly dance, but Kael could see the exhaustion in her eyes, the way her breath came in sharp gasps. Even she had limits.

Kael clenched his fists. He couldn't just stand there, not while Lira was risking her life. His heart pounded in his chest, the weight of the Nexus pressing against him. He could feel its power, beckoning him, but he resisted.

"Kael!" Lira shouted, her voice sharp. "Do something!"

A Riftspawn lunged at him, its mouth filled with jagged teeth. Without thinking, Kael reacted. He reached out, instinctively using the Nexus to warp the distance between him and the creature. The world seemed to stretch, the Riftspawn's body elongating, its claws missing him by mere inches as Kael shifted out of its reach.

The Nexus surged inside him, as though it were awakening from a deep slumber. More, it whispered, more power.

Kael gritted his teeth. He couldn't—he couldn't let it take control. But the next wave of Riftspawn was already closing in, and Lira was being overwhelmed. There was no time to hesitate.

Without another thought, he allowed the Nexus to fully take over.

The world twisted around him. His body moved faster than he ever could have on his own, the Nexus warping the space between him and his enemies. He struck out, his movements fluid and unnatural, the distance between him and the Riftspawn closing in an instant. The Nexus guided his every move, making each strike deadly and precise.

He felt the power surge within him, coursing through his veins. But it wasn't enough. The Nexus demanded more, pushing him further, urging him to keep going.

Kael's vision blurred as the world around him seemed to bend and fracture. He saw Lira in the distance, fighting to keep the remaining Riftspawn at bay. He saw the pain in her eyes, the way she was tiring.

He couldn't let her die. He wouldn't.

"Kael!" Lira's voice broke through the haze in his mind. "Kael, stop!"

But it was too late. The Nexus had taken complete control.

---

The world shifted. Time seemed to stretch and warp. Kael moved through the battlefield like a ghost, his limbs fluid and unnatural, every strike tearing through the Riftspawn with a brutal efficiency that horrified even him. He didn't feel human anymore. The Nexus had consumed him, body and soul.

When the last of the Riftspawn lay in ruins, Kael stood alone in the center of the battlefield, his chest heaving. His body ached, but there was something else—a hunger gnawing at him from within.

He glanced down at his hands. They were shaking, covered in blood. But it wasn't just the blood of the Riftspawn. Some of it was his own.

"What have I done?" he whispered, his voice hoarse.

The Nexus's whispers returned, but they weren't as quiet this time. They were louder, more insistent.

It's only the beginning.

Kael clenched his fists, trying to push the voice away. He couldn't afford to lose control, not again.

Lira approached slowly, her gaze wary but not fearful. "You're getting better," she said, though her voice lacked the usual confidence.

Kael didn't respond. He could still feel the Nexus, pulsing inside him, pulling at his mind. He couldn't stay like this. He had to rid himself of it.

But deep down, he knew the truth: it wasn't the Nexus that was the problem. It was him.
