Dot's hovered beside the boundary with both hands clenched. "You were gone for less than a second, but I hated every part of it."
Elias's head throbbed where the simulated bar had hit him.

The rotating bars continued their pattern. The course did not care that he had just learned what a recorded death felt like. It gave him the same ledge, the same bad angle, and the same choice. Panic would make him slip again.
He breathed through his nose and checked the path. The right beam had been the trap because it looked kinder than the left. The left platform carried two crossing bars, but their timing was visible.
