CHAPTER 285

My eyes stayed on the bag for a few seconds, like it might disappear if I blinked.

The bag was small. Black. The surface wasn't plain—the material had delicate white carvings pressed into it, thin patterns that caught the light when I moved slightly. It didn't look like something forgotten.

It looked carefully placed. Slowly, I stepped closer, like the object itself might hold answers I wasn't sure I wanted. I glanced around the room first.

The vanity was untouched. The chair where I had fallen asleep was exactly where I had left it. The hidden panel remained closed. The door to his room was shut.

Silent. Had someone come in last night? One of the staff? Had they left this behind? I reached out and picked up the bag.

It was light. Too light to be anything heavy or important. I turned it slightly in my hands, examining the sides, the seams, the careful design.

Then my gaze shifted toward his door. Closed. My fingers paused on the edge of the bag.
