Chapter 31 - First time illusion

The morning broke gently over the valley, spilling gold and pale mist through the trees. The roar of the waterfall filled the air, deep and steady — a heartbeat that never stopped. The scent of wet moss and riverstone hung heavy, sharp in the cool dawn breeze.

Sasuke was already awake.

He stood by the riverbank, the hem of his dark shirt fluttering faintly as his dagger hummed with fire chakra. Each swing cut cleanly through the air, scattering a trail of faint embers that hissed into the water. His movements were sharper than yesterday — more refined, more measured. Every motion carried the quiet focus of someone determined to grow stronger.

From the shade of the trees, Shisui watched silently for a few breaths. The boy's progress was fast — faster than anyone could manage in weeks. It made Shisui's chest tighten with a strange mix of pride and something heavier… something wordless.

He stepped forward, his voice cutting softly through the sound of the falls. "Your control's improving."

Sasuke straightened, glancing over his shoulder. "Morning, Shisui."

Shisui gave a faint nod. "Morning." He walked past him and crouched near the edge of the river, dipping a gloved hand briefly into the cold water. "Yesterday's lesson stuck, I see."

Sasuke sheathed the dagger, trying to hide the small, satisfied grin tugging at his mouth. "You said control matters more than power. So I practiced that."

"Good." Shisui straightened, brushing water from his fingers. "Then we'll move forward today."

"Forward?"

Shisui turned toward him, his expression calm but sharp. "It's time you learned what makes the Uchiha truly feared."

---

Sasuke blinked, uncertain. "Feared?"

"Tell me," Shisui said quietly. "When other clans spoke of the Uchiha, what did you hear?"

Sasuke hesitated. "That we were strong. That our fire techniques were unmatched. That we had the Sharingan."

"All true," Shisui said, pacing slowly in front of him. "But that's not *why* they feared us. The Fireball is power. The Sharingan is potential. But fear…" His eye narrowed slightly. "…fear comes from our control in the battlefield."

"Battlefield Control?"

Shisui's gaze turned distant, as though he were seeing something far older. "The Uchiha could end battles without ever drawing a blade. We didn't need to crush our enemies — we only needed them to question what was real."

He paused, the quiet between them filled by the steady rush of the waterfall. "When the mind turns against itself, even the strongest warrior falls."

Sasuke frowned slightly. "You mean Genjutsu."

"Exactly," Shisui said. "Our clan's greatest weapon was never fire or steel — it was the ability to bend perception. To make an enemy see what wasn't there, or fail to see what was. That's what terrified them."

He stepped closer, his tone softer now. "The Sharingan gives that power shape. But even without it, the principles remain. The Uchiha mastered illusion because they understood truth: *the mind is the battlefield.*"

Sasuke stared at him for a long moment, silent, thoughtful. Then: "Can you teach me?"

Shisui smiled faintly. "That's what today's for."

### **The First Lessons**

They moved a few paces back into the clearing. The air was still cool, sunlight filtering in thin beams through the canopy.

"Before we touch the Sharingan," Shisui began, "you'll learn the basics — how to sense, distort, and redirect chakra flow. You don't need the eyes to use Genjutsu. The eyes only amplify what's already there."

He crouched slightly, drawing a small line in the dirt with his finger. "A Genjutsu works like this — you disrupt the target's chakra signals to their brain. Their five senses become unreliable, and the illusion fills the gaps."

Sasuke folded his arms. "So… it's tricking them into believing something that isn't real?"

"Exactly," Shisui said. "But it's not just tricking them. You must *believe* in the illusion yourself. The more conviction you have, the harder it is for them to break free."

He straightened. "Watch closely."

Shisui's form blurred — not like his usual Body Flicker, but smoother, quieter. For a heartbeat, the space before Sasuke was empty. Then the faintest ripple in the air twisted — and suddenly, there were *two* Shisuis.

Sasuke's eyes widened.

The one on the left spoke. "Which one's real?"

Sasuke's instinct screamed to move, to react, but the second Shisui smirked — and both figures faded like smoke. When the haze cleared, Shisui stood exactly where he'd been, arms crossed.

"That…" Sasuke said, eyes wide, "wasn't speed."

"No," Shisui said with a hint of pride. "That was a simple Genjutsu — a reflection. Your eyes saw what your mind accepted."

Sasuke stepped forward, examining the space where the illusion had been. "How do I do that?"

"Start by focusing your chakra flow," Shisui said. "Not to enhance your body — but to extend your presence outward. You're not attacking. You're *touching* the senses around you."

He guided Sasuke's hands into a slow seal, then tapped his shoulder. "Now — release just enough chakra to ripple the air. Don't force it."

Sasuke concentrated. A faint pulse flickered through his body. For an instant, a shimmer appeared — a half-formed image of himself beside his true body — then vanished.

He exhaled, disappointed. "It broke too fast."

"Because you didn't believe it," Shisui said gently. "You doubted your own illusion. Don't think of it as lying to your opponent — think of it as *redefining reality*."

Sasuke frowned, then tried again. This time the illusion held longer — two breaths, then three — before dispersing like smoke.

Shisui's expression softened. "Good. You're learning faster than most."

Sasuke allowed himself a small grin. "Guess I have a good teacher."

"That, or I've got a stubborn student who refuses to fail," Shisui replied dryly.

### **Fire and Illusion**

As the day stretched on, they worked between fire and shadow — sometimes refining Sasuke's chakra control, other times weaving faint illusions that rippled the air.

When Sasuke's focus slipped, Shisui would correct him quietly, never scolding — only adjusting a stance or hand seal until every motion flowed naturally.

"Genjutsu isn't about speed or strength," Shisui reminded him. "It's rhythm. If you can control your breathing and chakra evenly, you can control the perception of time itself."

They trained until the afternoon sun turned golden. At one point, Sasuke managed to make Shisui's shadow waver unnaturally — a small victory, but enough to earn a faint smile from his teacher.

"Not bad," Shisui said. "You're beginning to understand."

Sasuke's chest rose with pride, but he hid it quickly. "It still feels strange. Like I'm… lying to my chakra."

"That's normal," Shisui said. "But remember — deception is an art, not a sin. We deceive to protect. The best Genjutsu user doesn't manipulate the enemy — he guides them to defeat themselves."

### **Evening Lessons**

When the sun began to lower, they took a break near the water. The mist had lifted, and the air was warm now.

Sasuke sat cross-legged, skipping stones across the river absently. Shisui stood a short distance away, silent, his gaze fixed on the falling sunlight.

After a while, Sasuke spoke. "You said the Uchiha were feared because of control. Do you think that's why people hated us too?"

Shisui turned slightly. "…Maybe. Power brings respect. Control brings fear. And fear… always leads to hate."

He crouched down beside Sasuke, picking up a smooth stone. "That's why it's important you learn restraint early. Genjutsu isn't meant for domination — it's for understanding. Once you see how fragile perception is, you learn to value truth more."

He tossed the stone lightly; it skipped three times before sinking. "Never lose that balance."

Sasuke looked at him, quiet for a long moment, then nodded. "I'll remember."

"Good."

### **The Question**

They stayed like that until dusk began to fall. The air grew cooler, shadows lengthening across the clearing. Sasuke eventually stood, brushing dust from his hands.

"Shisui," he said suddenly.

"Mm?"

"There's something I want to learn next."

Shisui raised an eyebrow. "Oh? What now?"

Sasuke's expression turned serious. "Your Body Flicker technique."

Shisui blinked — then chuckled softly. "That one, huh?"

"I've seen you move. You disappear before I can even blink. I want to learn that."

Shisui smiled behind his mask, faint amusement flickering in his eye. "You have good instincts. But Body Flicker isn't about raw speed — it's about *alignment.* Every breath, every muscle, every thread of chakra has to move in perfect unity. If you get it wrong, you'll tear yourself apart before you take two steps."

"I can handle it," Sasuke said, unwavering.

Shisui studied him for a long moment — the same determination he once saw in Itachi flickering behind those eyes. Then he sighed softly. "Not yet, Sasuke. You're not ready. Your chakra flow still fights against your body. When they move together — perfectly — then I'll teach you."

Sasuke's hands clenched at his sides. "Then I'll train until I'm ready."

Shisui's gaze softened. "I know you will. And when you are… you'll surpass me."

Sasuke blinked, startled. "Surpass you?"

A faint smile tugged at Shisui's lips. "That's the goal, isn't it?"

The boy didn't answer — but for the first time that day, he allowed himself to smile.

---

The sun slipped fully beyond the trees, and the valley dimmed to gold and shadow. The waterfall's sound deepened, filling the silence between them.

Teacher and student stood side by side, the flicker of their training fire casting twin silhouettes across the river.

One shadow was steady — old, tempered by time.

The other, smaller, burned with promise — still rising.

And in the quiet hum of the evening air, both seemed to move in rhythm — not as master and apprentice, but as two Uchihas walking the same path.
