Chapter 436 - Directed By Lena Crawford (1)

….

[LIE Studios | Post-Production Bay 1]

Lena Crawford sat in the center of the editing bay, the heavy 3D glasses resting loosely in her lap.

She stared at the blank screen, feeling the phantom weight of the past year pressing down on her shoulders.

She was no longer just the director of the hit NBC sitcom [Friends], but the director of [Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix], the fifth installment of a multi-billion-dollar global juggernaut.

When Regal had first offered her the position, she had accepted it because she was a woman who dreamed too big for Hollywood to contain her.

But dreaming big and executing a blockbuster were two vastly different things.

She still remembered the morning her appointment was announced to the public.

The internet's immediate, collective response had been a resounding, "Who?".

The skepticism of handing a massive fantasy franchise to a television director had been loud, immediate, and utterly merciless.

And if that hadn't been enough pressure, the studio had announced Ross Oakley's casting as Albus Dumbledore on the exact same day.

The fans had raged, claiming Oakley radiated the cold energy of a man who had never once been anybody's grandfather, entirely contrasting the warm, beloved presence of the late Richard Harris.

The media had questioned if she was fragile, if she would break under the immense scrutiny before the first production meeting even began.

But Regal had known what he was doing.

He had told Ross Oakley that Lena wasn't fragile at all, that she was tough, talented, and fully capable of directing an excellent film.

Regal hadn't hired her to oversee massive CGI spectacles, but because she understood how to navigate the complex emotional journeys of characters struggling with adolescence, loneliness, and the feeling of being different from everyone around them.

Now, staring at the darkened screen, she was about to find out if she had proven him right.

The heavy soundproof door hissed open.

Regal Seraphsail walked in, accompanied by Gwendolyn, Simon, and Zack Barg, the lead editor who had been painstakingly stitching together the native 3D footage for months.

Following closely behind them were the main trio: Daniel Radcliffe, Lily Harris, and Rupert Grint.

And tucked between Daniel and Lily was Mae, Lena's five-year-old daughter.

Mae had been a constant presence since the early reading sessions, sitting outside caravans and playing with stones, completely unfazed by the cinematic history being forged around her.

"Mum!" Mae called out, running over to Lena's chair. "Are we watching the magic now?"

"We are, sweetie." Lena smiled, pulling her daughter onto her lap.

She looked up at Regal. "Is the rendering fully complete?"

"Zack locked the final 3D composite an hour ago." Regal said, taking a seat beside Gwendolyn. "The color grading is matched, the sound mixing is finalized. This is the exact cut that drops to the world tomorrow morning."

Daniel leaned forward from the row behind them, exhaling a long breath. "Sigh… I've already gone through this process four times before and it is still as nerve-wracking as always. Especially after the previous film, Goblet of Fire, set the bar so high with the 3D dragon sequences."

Lena turned to him with a small shake of her head. "Now, Dan… you already know we can't compare these two films just because both are in 3D. Goblet of Fire was all about scale. Big challenges, dangerous competitions, and constant spectacle. Order of the Phoenix isn't trying to impress you in that way. It's a story about pressure. Harry spends most of the film trapped between people who don't believe him, institutions that want to silence him, and fears he can't escape."

She gestured toward the screen. "So instead of using 3D to make things jump out at the screen, we used it to pull the audience deeper into his perspective. The goal wasn't cheap excitement. It was to make them feel the physical weight he's carrying."

Daniel nodded slowly, his expression serious as he took in her words, completely absorbed in the artistic gravity of the moment.

He adjusted his glasses, leaning a fraction closer to the front row, his mind racing with the psychological depth of his character.

Behind him, Rupert Grint was creeping forward on his tiptoes.

Rupert moved with silent, exaggerated caution, his eyes wide with mischief.

Lily caught his movement out of the corner of her eye, quickly biting her lip to keep from laughing out loud, subtly stepping aside to give him a clear path.

Daniel, still completely locked into his intense actor headspace, didn't notice a thing.

Rupert got directly behind Daniel's chair, leaned over his shoulder, and lunged forward.

"BOOOMMMM BABYYYY!!!"

"Bloody hell!" Daniel shrieked, jumping half out of his seat.

His glasses flew off his face, landing directly in Lily's lap as he clutched his chest, his heart hammering against his ribs.

The entire editing bay erupted into laughter.

Mae clapped her small hands together, giggling wildly from Lena's lap, while Rupert leaned against the wall, practically breathless from laughing so hard.

"Gotcha." Rupert gasped, wiping a tear from his eye. "Blimey, Dan, you almost hit the ceiling."

"Rupert, I swear to God, my soul just left my body!" Daniel gasped, his voice an octave higher than normal as he reached blindly for his glasses.

Lily handed them back to him, her shoulders shaking with silent giggles. "Here you go, chosen one. Try to put your eyes back in your head. Honestly, Dan, you were lecturing Lena on character depth, and you couldn't even spot a six-foot ginger sneaking up on you."

As their fingers brushed over the frames, a sudden warmth filled the space between them.

There was a small tension between Daniel and Lily, though it wasn't the nervous tension anymore.

It was a bit more of a romantic and teasing tension, where they both already knew that they liked each other, but neither was stepping up and coming clean, treating the unspoken attraction almost like a competition to see who would crack first.

Because of the fright, Daniel had shifted so violently that he had practically landed right in Lily's lap.

Being that close made Lily blush a bit, a soft pink creeping up her neck, though she maintained her smug, teasing smirk.

Daniel, realizing just how near their faces were, got instantly flustered, his own cheeks burning as he hastily cleared his throat and sat back upright.

"He was completely stealthy!" Daniel protested, quickly putting his glasses back on and glaring playfully at Rupert to mask his racing pulse. "You've been spending too much time with the stunt department, mate."

"Hey, Lena said this movie was all about tension and unpredictable fears." Rupert grinned, casually slumping into the seat next to Daniel, entirely missing the lingering look passing between the two. "I was just helping you get into character. Method acting, see?"

"Yeah, well, the only method you achieved was nearly making me pass out before the film even starts." Daniel shot back, though a wide, relieved grin finally broke across his face.

He nudged Rupert sharply with his elbow, though his eyes darted right back to Lily, who was adjusting her posture with a quiet, knowing smile. "Remind me to check my shoes for plastic spiders before I get dressed tomorrow."

"Oh, don't give him ideas." Lily laughed, settling into her own seat and pulling her knees up to her chest, her eyes locked with Daniel's in a silent challenge. "He's already plotting how to scare the press junket crew next week."

"It's a tough job." Rupert concluded solemnly, crossing his arms with a thoroughly satisfied smirk. "But someone's got to keep the Boy Who Lived grounded."

From the front row, Regal slowly turned his head around.

He rested his arm along the back of his chair, looking at Daniel and Lily with a raised eyebrow and a highly amused, knowing grin that instantly broke their silent standoff.

"Okay, if you both are quite finished with your competitive romance, we can actually start the show." Regal announced, his voice carrying that familiar, effortless edge of cinematic authority. "Or, if you prefer, Zack can just loop the cherry blossom rendering for another hour to give you two more times to settle who's winning."

Gwendolyn let out a soft, elegant laugh beside him, nudging Regal's shoulder playfully.

Daniel's cheeks flared a fresh, brilliant shade of crimson as he frantically looked away from Lily, suddenly finding the lint on his jeans incredibly fascinating.

Lily, caught completely off guard, cleared her throat and hastily pulled her knees closer to her chest, her usual sharp, teasing wit failing her for a split second under Regal's direct spotlight.

"Right." Daniel muttered quickly, sitting up completely straight and staring fixedly at the blank silver screen. "Ready when you are, Miss. Director."

"Yes, please start the film." Lily murmured, her voice sounding a little breathier than usual as she tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, refusing to look in Daniel's direction.

Rupert, looking between the two of them, blinked in mild confusion before shaking his head with a grin. "Blimey. I leave them alone for two minutes."

Regal chuckled, turning back around to face the front. He looked up at the projection booth and gave a single, definitive nod. "Alright, Zack. Kill the lights. Let's see the magic."

Zack tapped his keyboard. "Glasses on, everyone."

The lights in the editing bay slowly dimmed into a deep, velvety darkness, leaving only the soft glow of the console indicator lights.

The massive silver screen hummed to life, casting a cool, cinematic blue glow over the faces of the crew and the trio.

The playful banter faded into absolute, professional silence as the heavy opening notes of the score began to echo through the soundstage, pulling everyone instantly back into the world of magic, secrets, and the heavy weight of the choices left to make.
