Chapter 15 - recognition of the frontier

Chapter 14 — Recognition of the Frontier

The carriage wheels clattered over cobblestones as Rudra leaned against the soft velvet cushion, watching the kingdom's capital rise in the distance. He could see the fortified walls stretching endlessly, the spires of the royal palace glinting in the late afternoon sun. The sight should have been overwhelming, even for him—but after rebuilding a town from scratch, coordinating farmers, merchants, and soldiers, he felt calm, focused. A child in body, but an adult in mind, Rudra had long ago shed the hesitation of mortality.

Princess Eyselle rode beside him, sitting upright, hands folded gracefully in her lap, her sapphire eyes reflecting the golden sunlight. "The streets are crowded today," she noted, glancing at the passing people who had paused to wave, bow, or whisper behind their hands. "Your fame precedes you, Rudra. Even now, in your youth, your deeds are known."

Rudra allowed himself a small smile. "It is not just me," he said. "Kael and Luria fought alongside me. The dragons were four, not one. The town would not have survived without our combined efforts." He glanced at the princess. "And the townsfolk will remember the work we've done, too. Their trust is our true strength."

Eyselle's lips curved slightly, as though she admired the calculated precision in his words. "You are wise beyond your years," she said. "I will do my part to ensure that recognition follows your town. The king will need to see the full report of the dragon threat you and your team faced."

The carriage slowed as they entered the capital. Massive gates, lined with guards bearing the kingdom's crest, swung open to welcome them. Citizens lined the streets, whispering and pointing. Merchants stopped their work, and children scampered to catch glimpses of the young boy reputed to have slain four dragons. Some bowed deeply. Others whispered tales of magic, courage, and strategic genius.

Rudra's mind wandered briefly to the system.

[ System: Recommended protocol — maintain formal composure. Avoid exaggeration. Prioritize factual reporting. ]

He nodded imperceptibly. That was all he needed. Facts would impress the court far more than embellished tales.

The carriage drew to a halt before the palace steps, and a page swiftly announced, "His Majesty, the King requests your audience with the royal court."

Rudra stepped down, careful not to stumble, his small boots scuffing against the polished stones. Kael and Luria flanked him, taller than he was, their faces set in serious, disciplined expressions. The princess followed closely, her posture perfect, radiating authority. Even the butler, Cedric, and the maid, Mira, had been permitted to accompany him, ensuring that no logistical problem went unattended.

Inside the main hall, the high ceilings and towering windows made Rudra pause. Nobles clad in fine silks, embroidered with gold and jewels, observed the procession with polite, measured interest. Their eyes lingered on the boy who dared to stand among them. Some smiled faintly. Others' gazes were sharp, calculating, filled with concealed envy.

The king sat upon an elevated throne, a tall man with an imposing presence and deep, commanding eyes. Beside him, the queen's posture was regal, serene, while the crown prince and princess maintained decorum, as expected of heirs to the kingdom.

Rudra bowed respectfully. "Your Majesty," he said. His voice carried the calm authority of someone decades older than his years. "I am Rudra of Yeringham. My team and I report on the recent threat at the border town, including four dragons that have been eliminated."

He gestured subtly, and Kael and Luria stepped forward. "We fought alongside me," Rudra added. "Together, we ensured that the town and surrounding villages were secured."

The king's eyes widened slightly, as if measuring not just the boy's words, but the precision in his tone, the confidence in his posture. "Dragons… four of them?" he asked, voice deep, carrying over the hall. "And they were slain by a child and his companions?"

"Not by me alone, Your Majesty," Rudra replied. "We coordinated with the townsfolk, using both magic and strategy. The dragons' threat was neutralized through combined effort and careful planning."

A hush fell across the hall. Whispers rose like a tide. Courtiers and nobles exchanged glances, some impressed, others skeptical, some already plotting in silence.

"Show me the evidence," the king commanded. He gestured, and Rudra activated a subtle magical projection. Holographic images of scorched terrain, dragon corpses, and the pattern of their strikes appeared mid-air. Dragon scales shimmered with their iridescent sheen, claws embedded in the earth, wings torn.

The princess Eyselle stepped forward, presenting further details about the defensive strategy, troop placements, and resource allocation. Her voice was clear and precise, commanding attention even in the grand hall. "Your Majesty, the dragons were cornered efficiently to minimize collateral damage. The local militia was supported by Kael's tactical maneuvers and Luria's magical containment spells. Rudra directed the overall operation."

The king studied the projections silently for a long moment, then slowly leaned back, nodding. "Remarkable," he murmured. "It is rare to see such precision, even among seasoned adults. Rudra, Kael, Luria… you have earned recognition."

He turned to the court nobles, whose smiles remained polite but eyes flickered with suspicion. "The town of Yeringham sits strategically on the frontier, bordering our southern pass and near the monster forest. If these threats were ignored, the kingdom's trade routes would be jeopardized. Your work has preserved the kingdom's security and commerce. For this, I grant you the following rewards…"

Rudra's heart did not quicken; he had expected this. The king's words carried authority, but he waited, silent, measured, calculating.

"…Official baronial status for Rudra," the king continued. "Control of the town and surrounding lands, to administer as he sees fit for the defense and prosperity of the region. Authority to recruit and manage soldiers, with royal funding allocated to fortify and maintain the town. Monetary grants and resources for infrastructure. And the Dragon Slayer honor, for the slaying of the four dragons threatening the realm."

Gasps echoed throughout the hall. Courtiers shuffled uneasily. A few whispered openly about the boy, his youth, and the audacity of his achievements. Rival nobles' faces tightened, but they smiled politely before looking away.

Rudra inclined his head. "Thank you, Your Majesty. The people of Yeringham will be protected and their livelihoods secured."

The king nodded. "See that you do. And… Princess Eyselle, you are charged with overseeing the recruitment and management of the new forces. The frontier must be strengthened, and your guidance is necessary."

The princess' eyes sparkled faintly. "It will be done, Your Majesty," she replied, her voice unwavering.

Rudra allowed himself the smallest of smirks. The princess had been given authority, yes, but she also now had a vested interest in the town's stability. A clever move.

The king continued, his gaze scanning the assembled nobles. "Kael and Luria, your loyalty and skill have been acknowledged. You are to assist Rudra in all matters of frontier defense and town fortification."

The two companions bowed deeply, pride in their expressions.

Rudra's mind, however, was already racing. There was the fortress to plan, trade routes to secure, taxes to reform, roads to repair, and an economy to stabilize. The system quietly fed calculations into his awareness, projections of trade, population growth, and troop placement.

[ System: Blueprint for star-structured fortress ready. Recommend simultaneous worker allocation and magical reinforcement. ]

[ System: Predicted jealousy from noble houses – 94%. Tactical planning suggested: gather allies, expand influence subtly. ]

Rudra filed it away. There would be time for careful politics. For now, he listened, absorbed, and plotted.

Finally, he addressed the king again. "Your Majesty, may I request permission to rename the town? A new name to reflect its renewal and fortified future?"

The king's eyes twinkled. "Do so. Let it bear the mark of your vision. The capital will recognize it officially."

Rudra nodded. The foundation for the future fortress, the recognition of his leadership, and the groundwork for prosperity were all laid.

And yet, even as the hall buzzed with celebration, whispers, and admiration, Rudra noticed the subtle looks exchanged among nobles. Eyes that smiled while plotting. Fingers that tapped lightly on arms as if calculating power shifts. He felt the first tendrils of animosity rising, the first seeds of political challenges.

[ System: Recommend careful observation of rival nobles. Potential schemes detected. Probability of interference: medium to high. ]

He acknowledged silently. The game had only begun.

Outside, as the royal procession departed, the citizens of the capital cheered, curious and impressed by the young baron. Kael and Luria exchanged brief words of pride and camaraderie. Princess Eyselle rode with poise, yet he could see determination in her gaze. She would fulfill her responsibilities—and they would all move forward as a unit.

As the carriage turned toward the outskirts, the capital's walls shrinking behind them, Rudra allowed himself one moment of reflection. They had achieved recognition. Rewards had been granted. Soldiers would arrive. The town's name would be changed. Dragon Slayer honors had been conferred.

All the pieces for the next phase were in place.

And yet, he knew that power, recognition, and success always attracted attention—both friendly and hostile.

[ System: Long-term monitoring of noble houses recommended. Suggest establishing covert intelligence network in town. ]

Rudra's hand brushed the small map projected by the system. Roads, trade routes, the forest boundary, and fortress placement shimmered in ghostly blue lines. The star-shaped pattern of the walls already filled his mind.

"…Everything begins here," he whispered. "The frontier is ours to protect, and the kingdom will see that we are ready."

His friends, his companions, the princess, and even his parents—each had a role to play. The town, reborn and fortified, would not just survive. It would thrive.

And Rudra, though only seven in the coming months, felt the weight of leadership heavier than any sword he had ever wielded.

The path ahead was clear. Ambitions measured, plans methodical, and recognition earned.

For the first time in this life, Rudra allowed himself a smile that was neither strategy nor calculation—but quiet satisfaction. The frontier, the town, the kingdom—it was all in his hands.

And though whispers of envy and shadowed intentions lingered behind polite court smiles, Rudra was ready.

This was only the beginning.
