Laena Velaryon (106 A.C. Second Moon)
Driftmark – High Tides Courtyard
Laena stood waiting for Rhaenyra to arrive as she thought on the past two days, and those had been strange ones. She had been balancing her relationship with her friend and lover, Visenya, and her relationship with Aemon, a man she knew she loved. Yet it was difficult. All would have accepted Visenya being Aemon's lover, but it had not been that easy, as she had expected. She had seen Aemon's face, one that had been full of betrayal, and she had her Visenya and Rhaenyra.
She had hoped that helping Visenya gain Aemon's affection would work. Yet it seemed Aemon was not like other men. She knew he desired her, and he told her as much. So why did he not desire Visenya, even at twelve years? She was only three, and nine moons younger than they were. Also becoming quite a beauty, if Laena herself were to judge. But Aemon had not acted on it when Visenya had gone to the bath, to try and change his mind.
Afterward, she came to hear chambers; Visenya had cried. Yet afterward, she told her off. She didn't approve. Visenya had gone to her betrothed behind her back and had shown her nakedness to him. Even if she did understand why, it still was wrong, and Visenya should have done it, or first come to her if she wanted to do that.
The evening meal had been awkward as well. During it, it had mostly been Laenor who struck up conversation, speaking of his excitement for the upcoming tourney and taking pride that he was being Aemon's squire, even if Aemon himself was not a knight. Bennard had joined in the delight, stating the same, and saying he wanted to see the Dragonpit and the Iron Throne.
The following day was much the same. Aemon trained, yet he had not sought out her company, regarding both her and Visenya with indifference. Yet Laena had hoped that with the arrival of Rhaenyra, the cloud around them would disappear.
Rhaenyra's advance party arrived first, with Ser Steffon Darklyn leading the royal procession, arriving with cargo and gifts meant for Aemon's nameday celebrations.
Then a roaring announcement, and the flash of yellow, gold, and orange in the sky, heralded Rhaenyra's dragon. It landed beyond the walls, and seeing her friend, upon dragonback, made Laena smile.
Ser Steffon walked through the gates of High Tide, and a few moments later, he arrived with Rhaenyra. Her silver-gold hair was braided in the pattern of the traditional Valyrian braid.
She wore red, black, and blue riding leathers, with a badge of a split House Arryn and House Targaryen upon her chest.
"Princess Rhaenyra, I welcome you to the Isle of Driftmark, and the hospitality of High Tide is yours," her mother announced with a small nod.
"Thank you, Princess Rhaenys," Rhaenyra replied with a smile. Then her look fell upon Aemon, who stood beside her brother. "Aemon!" Rhaenyra exclaimed, rushing toward him.
Aemon smiled, ah, that bright smile Laena had not seen for a while. "Niece," Aemon said as he took her into an embrace.
"You have grown. You look a lot like your mother now, you know that? A true beauty. Like her, a true Targaryen, except for the fact that you have your father's eye color," Aemon said with a grin. Rhaenyra blushed.
Laena did not know what she thought of that compliment, as Aemon knew that Rhaenyra liked her then. Then again, Aemon had not seen them for almost three years. They all had changed, and both Visenya and Rhaenyra had grown into their womanhood, Visenya quicker than most had expected, despite her age.
After greeting her, Aemon introduced his cousin. "Princess, may I introduce my page and future squire, Bennard Stark?"
"It is an honor to meet you, Princess. My lady aunt, cousins, all have spoken highly of you," the boy said.
Rhaenyra laughed. "Thank you, Lord Bennard. I am quite sure you will do well as my uncle's page."
"I shall," the boy added. Looking at Aemon with pride.
After Rhaenyra embraced Laenor and Visenya, she came to Laena. "Oh, Laena, I missed you." Rhaenyra embraced her, and she cheekily kissed her neck. Laena smiled as she returned the embrace.
"Me too. Ah, let me introduce you to my own lady-in-waiting when I marry Aemon," Laena said, and Rhaenyra looked up in surprise.
Seranella stepped forward. "Seranella Velaryon, my great cousin, the only granddaughter of my uncle Vaemion, and daughter of my cousin Malentine, who sadly is not with us anymore," Laena said, giving her cousin a comforting smile.
"It is an honor, Princess. I hope to get to know you better in the coming days," Seranella replied, giving a short curtsy.
"I hope so, too," Rhaenyra replied as she took Sera's hands.
"Laena, why do you not escort the Princess to her chambers in the family wing? We always keep a couple of rooms for our closer kin," her mother noted.
"I shall, Mother," Laena replied.
The crowd began to depart. As it dispersed, Laena took Rhaenyra by the arm and, together with Visenya, escorted her to her chambers, followed by Ser Steffon. They chatted lightly as they walked.
"Aemon's room is the one further on," Laena remarked as they entered.
"Hmm," Rhaenyra said as she sat on the bed. "So how has it been, having him back?"
"It has been... complicated," Laena replied.
Visenya looked away, her expression falling.
Remembering Aemon's words, Laena closed the door. Looking outside closing it.
"Aemon knows," she said softly.
Rhaenyra's eyes widened. "Knows what?"
Laena took a breath. "About your feelings for him. About Visenya's feelings. About what happened between you and Visenya. And about the kiss between all of us."
Rhaenyra's face went pale. Her gaze flickered from Laena to Visenya, then to Seranella.
"She knows?" Rhaenyra asked.
"She does," Laena said. "I have known Sera most of my life. She would not betray us."
Seranella lowered her eyes respectfully. "Never, Princess."
Rhaenyra nodded slowly, though her shoulders remained tense. "Does that mean she has taken part as well?"
Seranella's eyes widened slightly. "No, Princess. I only know because Lady Laena trusts me."
Laena gave her cousin a grateful look before turning back to Rhaenyra.
"How did Aemon find out?" Rhaenyra asked.
"We made the mistake of speaking too loudly where we could be overheard," Laena admitted. "Aemon came to my chambers after training. There were no guards outside. He heard Visenya asking whether he would mind being invited into our bed."
Rhaenyra buried her face in her hands. "Gods."
"We did not mean for him to hear," Visenya said quickly. "But once he did, there was no hiding it."
"And you told him?" Rhaenyra asked, her voice sharp.
"We had to," Laena replied. "He asked for the truth. I would not lie to him."
Rhaenyra's eyes narrowed. "You told him about me?"
Visenya stepped forward. "Nyra, we had no choice."
"There is always a choice," Rhaenyra snapped.
Laena's voice hardened slightly. "And lying to him would have been the worst one. He is my betrothed. I kissed you all once while we were drunk, and I have regretted not telling him ever since. I will not begin my marriage with more secrets."
Rhaenyra fell silent at that.
Visenya lowered her gaze. "He was angry. Not only angry, though. Hurt. Worried. Protective too, in his way."
Rhaenyra looked toward Visenya, her anger softening. She moved to sit beside her and took her hand.
"What did he say?"
"That we were reckless," Visenya whispered. "That if the wrong person had heard us, or found us, both our names could have been ruined. Yours and mine."
Rhaenyra swallowed.
Laena nodded. "He was right."
Rhaenyra looked at her then, wounded. "You agree with him?"
"I do," Laena said quietly. "I did not want to hear it, but yes. I agree with him. We are not serving girls sneaking kisses behind a stable. You are the King's daughter. Visenya is a princess and dragonrider. I am to be Aemon's wife. If this became a rumor, it would not stay harmless."
Rhaenyra looked away.
Visenya squeezed her hand. "He asked if my honor had been taken."
Rhaenyra's head snapped back. "He asked you that?"
"He was worried," Visenya said quickly. "Not cruel. Worried. In his mind, if a man had touched me, or if someone had used this against me, then everything would be worse."
Seranella looked down and said softly, "That is how men would see it, Princess."
Rhaenyra glanced at her, but said nothing.
"So what now?" Rhaenyra asked. "He means for us to stop?"
Visenya's eyes filled with tears. "He said it cannot continue."
"Do you want that?" Rhaenyra asked Visenya.
Laena smiled sadly at the pair.
"No," Visenya whispered. "But without Aemon, I do not know how we can continue. We are both to be wed one day, and Aemon was not interested in me. He sent me away."
Rhaenyra frowned, and Laena sighed. She still did not like that Visenya had done that, and she had been quite angry with her friend afterward.
"She slipped into the baths while Aemon was bathing," Laena said. "She tried to show him she was a woman. Aemon sent her away."
Rhaenyra frowned once more. "You did? He sent you away?"
Visenya looked down. "He told me I was a woman now, that I had flowered, but he did not feel the same way. He would not even look at me. He looked toward my face. He said it could not happen. I told him he could marry both Laena and me, as Aegon did."
"And he still refused?" Rhaenyra said softly.
Visenya nodded.
Rhaenyra's expression softened, and she kissed Visenya's cheek. "Any man would find you beautiful, as I do. He even told us both we were becoming beauties,"
"He has restraints; he also hasn't taken another woman to bed, he told me so," Laena said. Visenya and Rhaenyra both frowned toward him. "I spoke with him after we told him everything. He told me something that made me blush."
Rhaenyra looked toward her, curiosity stirring despite the tension.
"What do you mean?"
Laena blushed faintly. "That is between Aemon and me."
Rhaenyra's mouth twitched. "So he is not made of stone."
"No," Laena replied. "But he is not Daemon either. He will not simply take what is offered because it is offered."
"Well, both my uncles were always different," Rhaenyra said, frowning. "I knew that, yet I did not expect him to refuse Visenya. He is a man, and many men have needs. They even bed without the need for children. My mother told me that. The septa told us something similar. I suppose what we are doing is not so different."
"That's true, but if we want Aemon involved, then it will be different," Laena said.
Rhaenyra looked at her.
"How?"
"Because Aemon did not agree to it," Laena replied. "And because none of us truly thought of what came after."
Rhaenyra fell silent.
Laena looked between her and Visenya, then took a slow breath.
"I kissed you both," she admitted. "I enjoyed it. I will not pretend otherwise. I care for you both more than I perhaps should. And if the world were different, if I were not promised to Aemon, perhaps I would have allowed myself to be more foolish."
Visenya looked up, hope flickering in her eyes.
Rhaenyra's expression softened. "Then why not?"
"Because I love him," Laena said. "Because he is to be my husband. Because I will not take lovers behind his back and then stand before the gods beside him as if I had done nothing wrong."
Visenya's hope dimmed slightly, but she nodded.
Laena stepped closer to them both.
"But as said before, if Aemon knew," she continued carefully, "if he agreed freely, without being cornered, without us trying to tempt him into something he does not want, then perhaps things could be different."
Rhaenyra's eyes widened slightly. "Different how?"
Laena looked down for a moment, gathering her courage.
"I see, we're all sharing him," she said softly. "Perhaps the three of us could also do more than kiss."
Visenya's breath caught.
"You mean that?" she whispered.
"I do," Laena replied. "But only with Aemon's approval. Only if he knows. Only if he wishes it as well, I will not make him a fool, and I will not begin my marriage with betrayal."
Rhaenyra stood slowly. "You would be our lover, if Aemon agreed?"
Laena's cheeks warmed, but she did not look away.
"Yes," she said. "If Aemon agreed. Suppose he wanted such an arrangement. Then yes, I could see myself loving you both that way."
Visenya wiped at her eyes. "I do not want to lose you."
Laena took her hand. "You will not lose me even if this all doesn't work the way we want it to. You still be my friend, and future goodsister. But you must understand this. Aemon comes first for me. He is to be my husband. My first loyalty will be to him."
Rhaenyra looked away, struggling with that.
Laena reached for her hand as well. "I hope it all works out, and perhaps there is a future for us.
"So we wait."
"Yes," Laena said. "We wait. We apologize. We prove this is not some game born from wine and wanting. And if one day Aemon chooses to open that door, then we walk through it together. If he does not, then we accept it."
Visenya wiped at her cheek. "I do not know if I can stop loving him."
"I am not asking you to stop loving him," Laena said gently. "I am asking you not to force him into something he doesn't want."
Rhaenyra looked at Visenya, then back at Laena.
"Very well," she said. "We wait. But I will speak to him."
"To apologize," Laena said quickly.
Rhaenyra sighed. "Yes. To apologize."
Laena gave her a knowing look.
"And not to persuade him."
Rhaenyra's mouth twitched. "You know me too well."
"I do," Laena replied.
Seranella cleared her throat softly. "Should I have wine brought?"
All three turned to look at her.
She quickly added, "Watered wine, my lady. Very watered."
Despite everything, Laena laughed softly.
"For once, Sera, I think that is wise."
Rhaenyra looked at Visenya, then back at Laena.
"I do love him," she said quietly. "I think I have for some time. But I love Visenya too. Or I think I do. It is hard to know where love ends and wanting begins."
Laena's expression softened.
"Then perhaps that is what we need to learn before asking Aemon for anything."
Visenya stood and moved closer.
"I do not want to lose either of you."
Laena embraced her. "You will not lose me. But things must change."
Rhaenyra joined them after a moment, wrapping her arms around them both.
Seranella walked out the door and went to get some wine.
Laena held them both close and whispered, "I love you both. But I will not betray him."
Rhaenyra closed her eyes. "Then we must hope he is perhaps see something in the future that we offer him, and work to make it happen."
Laena gave a small laugh and shook her head. Rhaenyra would not change, but could not help but agree.
"Well, I know one thing about Aemon," she said. "He listens to ideas if they benefit him and this family."
"Well then, we have work on coming up with a plan," Visenya added with a more delighted laugh.
Aemon Targaryen (106 A.C. Third Moon)
Isle of Driftmark – Beach near High Tide
Aemon sat on the beach beside Laenor, explaining his situation. Laenor had noticed his behavior and confronted him. Laenor was his best friend, and Aemon trusted him with the truth.
"Well, I did not expect it from my sister, yet then again, I also have different tastes. I am still grateful for you not rejecting me, not calling me odd, or other things."
"I would never have done so, Laenor. We all feel the way we feel. I never thought of laying another woman beside Laena." Although it was not strictly true, it was more of a last-ditch attempt to weaken a potential claimant if the Dance still happened.
"I know. I saw the looks the eldest daughter of House Glover gave you during the last feast at Winterfell." Laenor said with a smirk.
Aemon smiled. Thinking on it now, he could have done it. He could have lain with her. Yet what would have been the point? He did not care for her. She was quite pretty, yes, but that was it. Empty pleasure. He knew, somewhere deep down, that was not what his sister, Rhaenyra, and Laena felt. Even if Laena only kissed, them once. It was more than that. He had seen it in their eyes when they spoke. There was affection there.
"I wonder if this is what my father felt like when he could not return the affections of Viserra. Then the guilt he felt after she died. What if Visenya does something stupid?" Aemon said.
Laenor nodded, then something sparked in his eyes. "There might be a solution to our problems. As my father's heir, I am expected to marry and have children. Yet I have tried, in the past, to think of women when I help myself, and nothing happens. Any woman I marry will be miserable."
"If you are inclined to be open to having a relationship with Visenya, I could marry her. You could sire my children, and in the future, we could wed one of your children with to Laena mine. That way, the blood of House Velaryon stays on Driftmark."
Aemon looked at him wide-eyed. Historically, either Rhaenyra and Laenor had been unlucky, all their children looking like grandparents and great-grandparents, or they had all been sired by Harwin Strong. What Laenor was suggesting, even at three and ten, could work. He trusted Laenor enough for it. Yet could he start to feel differently about Visenya, to look at her as a lover instead of only a sister? He had noticed her becoming a beauty, but noticing beauty was one thing. Laying with someone was another.
Then there was also the other option, the one he wished he could keep open. Yet knowing the feelings Visenya held, could he truly expect her to marry his older brother? No, he could not, at least not anymore.
"Aemon?" Laenor said, pulling him from his thoughts.
"Sorry, I was thinking. But Laenor, I am not sure if I can. Yet I thank you for the idea. I shall think on it." Laenor nodded.
Aemon's Chamber
Aemon prepared himself for the feast as one of the grooms of House Velaryon helped him dress. He missed his own staff, people he knew and trusted. Yet they would arrive with the rest when they traveled to King's Landing for the wedding.
Tonight was a small feast to welcome Rhaenyra. Tomorrow would be his six-and-tenth nameday, six-and-thirty technically. Yet it was not something he thought of often. Here he was, six and ten again, as he had been in that other life. That life faded more and more into distant memory. Some voices he had forgotten, and some faces were long lost to him. Sadly, some never disappeared from his mind, like those glinting blue eyes of Bran.
Then came a knock, just as his groom finished his work. "Thank you, Arelex."
The man nodded and opened the door.
"Lady Laena asks for entry, my prince," Harrold stated.
"Let her inside," Aemon said.
Soon she was there, clad in a pretty light blue dress, with a red three-headed dragon embroidered on both shoulders.
"Laena, what do you wish for?" he asked as he closed the door behind them.
"To talk you, as just spoke with Rhaenyra, and Visenya." she said softly.
Aemon frowned. "It is a strange thing. We spoke, and not long after, my sister came to me in the baths. I told you both that what was happening could not continue as it was. Yet here we are, with Visenya still trying to make it happen."
Laena's face tightened with guilt, though not the guilt he had expected.
"I did not know she was going to do that," she said. "Visenya acted on her own."
"I know," Aemon replied quietly. "She told me as much."
Laena looked up at him, surprised.
"She did?"
"She did," Aemon said. "But I still wanted to hear it from you. And I wanted to know what you said to her afterward."
Laena swallowed and nodded.
"She came back crying," Laena admitted. "At first, I wanted only to comfort her. She was hurt, ashamed, and angry with herself. But when she told me what she had done, I was angry too. Truly angry."
Aemon watched her closely.
"I told her she had been reckless," Laena continued. "That she had not only embarrassed herself, but placed you in a cruel position. You had already told us you needed time, and she ignored that because she wanted an answer she could bear."
Aemon exhaled slowly. "That is what I feared."
"She thought if you saw her as a woman, then perhaps you would feel differently," Laena said. "But that was unfair to you. It was unfair to herself as well."
Aemon's jaw tightened. "I did see her as a woman. That was part of the problem."
Laena's expression softened.
"I know," she said. "And I understand now why you sent her away. At first, I thought you were being cold. But after thinking on it, I saw the truth. Had you taken what she offered, it might have pleased her for a moment, but it would have wounded her far worse afterward."
Aemon looked at her then.
Laena lowered her gaze. "Many men would have taken advantage of her. You did not. You protected her, even from herself."
For a moment, silence filled the chamber.
"I am glad you understand that," Aemon said at last.
"I do," Laena replied. "And I am sorry I did not understand it sooner."
Aemon looked away, his fingers brushing over the embroidery on his sleeve.
"Laena, I need honesty from you. No more half-truths. No more hidden desires whispered behind doors. If I am to marry you, I need to know where you stand."
She nodded. "Then I will tell you plainly."
He looked back at her.
"I love you," Laena said. "I want to be your wife. I want your trust. I want the life we spoke of. But I also care for Rhaenyra and Visenya. I kissed them once, and I enjoyed it. I will not pretend otherwise."
His face tightened slightly, but he let her continue.
"If the world were different, if I were not promised to you, perhaps I would have allowed myself to be more foolish," she admitted. "But the world is not different. I am promised to you. I love you."
Aemon was quiet for a long moment.
"But if I agreed? That if wanted to take them as lovers." he asked.
Laena swallowed. "If you agreed freely, without guilt, without pressure, without us cornering you, then perhaps things could be different. I am not closed to the thought. But only with your knowledge. Only with your approval. Only if you wished it as well."
"And if I never did?"
Her eyes lowered, and he saw the pain there. But when she answered, her voice remained steady. "Then I would accept it."
"Would you?"
"Yes," she said. "Not easily, perhaps. But yes. You are to be my husband. My first loyalty will be to you."
Aemon searched her face, looking for the lie, but found none.
"No more secrets," he said.
"No more secrets," Laena promised.
He let out a slow breath. "Good." Even felt guilty, as kept secrets form her as well. Yet one day when they were wed he would speak to her about it.
Then went backt to the problem. Could he see them as lovers, yet how would work?
"Laena, I know the three of you, and know you all are still plotting. You are all dragons, and are stuborn. So how do you see this working, Laena?" he asked. "Rhaenyra is the daughter of the King, unmarried, and close in the line of succession. Visenya is my sister, a princess and a dragonrider. You are to be my wife. Your father would not accept me marrying another woman so easily, especially not before I have even wed you."
"I know," Laena said. "I have thought of that."
"Have you?"
She nodded. "My mother and father have been receiving reports of increased activity in the Stepstones."
Aemon's gaze sharpened. "The Triarchy."
"Yes," Laena replied. "The Triarchy has taken the Stepstones, and the tolls to pass through those seas are rising. My father will not ignore it forever."
"No, he will not," Aemon said. "Corlys will eventually want war."
"I think so too," Laena said. "And when that time comes, my father will need support. Ships, men, dragons, the crown's blessing. Rhaenyra is her father's favorite, and Aemma has always liked you. Perhaps, if the situation grows bad enough, my father could be persuaded to support your marriage to Rhaenyra as part of a greater agreement."
Aemon stared at her.
"You have thought on this more than I expected."
"I am my father's daughter. If we sail a course we need to plan ahead" Laena said with a faint smile.
"That you are," Aemon replied. "But that still leaves Visenya. Do you mean for me to marry her as well? Me marrying three highborn ladies, two of them princesses, would not go over well with the realm. The last man to do such a thing was Maegor, and he is remembered as the worst King we ever had, though Aenys was a close second."
Part of him knew Maegor had been too ruthless, yet the man had also brought the kingdoms to heel, even if his rule had not been a good one. Balerion had told him much he had never known about Maegor, and the greatest change had come after the man nearly died during the Trial of Seven.
Laena looked down.
Aemon sighed. He knew they wanted this. To be honest, such matches could strengthen his house. Yet wanting something did not make it wise.
Then Laenor's proposal surfaced again in his mind.
Could it work? Could he love his sister not only as a sister, but as a lover, as the mother of his children? Could such a thing be done without destroying them all?
"Laena," he said slowly, "there may be an idea, though it is not mine alone. There is something you must know about your brother. He was the one who suggested part of it."
Laena frowned. "You spoke with Laenor about this?"
"I did. He is my best friend. I know I can trust him."
He paused and looked at her carefully. "Laenor suggested that he take Visenya to wife."
Laena blinked. "Truly? Laenor never took much interest in girls. He mostly hangs around boys, if I recall."
"There is a reason for that," Aemon said. "Laenor's appetites, so to speak, lie with the same sex. Unlike you, he does not feel the same about women as he does about men."
Laena's eyes widened, but she did not look disgusted. Only surprised. "He told you this?"
"He did. He spoke of it because he knew it was unlikely he could sire a child who would inherit Driftmark. He suggested I take Visenya as a lover and sire children on her, children he would claim as his own. Then one of our children would marry his future heir, so Velaryon blood would still sit the Driftwood Throne."
Laena sat down slowly. "He trusts you greatly."
"And I trust him," Aemon said. "But trust does not make the matter simple."
"No," Laena murmured. "It does not."
"Laenor kissed me once," Aemon admitted. "In the North. I did not feel the same, and I told him so. Afterward, we spoke. I told him he would always have my support. He needed it, as such things are not accepted, no more than what exists between Rhaenyra and Visenya."
Laena took that in, then nodded slowly.
"So you would be willing to take Visenya as a lover?" she asked.
"No," Aemon said. "Not yet. As I said, I do not feel the same. Nor do I feel that way for Rhaenyra. I never thought of either of them in that manner. Yes, they are becoming beautiful women, but I do not have those feelings for them. I could lie with them, but what then? Pleasure is all well and good, but unless there is a true connection, it does not last."
He thought of Daenerys then. He had loved her. He had felt something when that bond was broken. Their couplings had been amazing, yes, but it had been the connection that mattered. Afterward, her attempts to share his bed had not worked, because he no longer wanted her.
"So you would not accept them?" Laena asked.
"Currently, no," Aemon replied. "And I do not want them pushed toward me as if I am a prize to be won. I am not Daemon. I will not take a woman merely because she offers herself."
Laena's expression softened. "I know. That is part of why I love you."
Aemon looked at her, and some of the anger faded from his eyes.
"I shall speak to them both," he said. "Rhaenyra and Visenya. But for now, I am inclined to decline. I need time to think on all of this, and they need time to decide whether what they feel is love, desire, or some dream they have built around me."
Laena nodded. "That is fair."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Aemon lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles.
"Yet know this," he said quietly. "I do love you."
Laena smiled, relief softening her face. "I love you too."
He leaned in and kissed her, slow and careful at first. Laena returned it just as softly, her hand rising to his cheek.
When they parted, she rested her forehead against his.
He smiled faintly and kissed her once more.
"Then let us go to the feast," he said. "Before another dragon decides to storm my chambers with another proposal."
Laena laughed softly.
"I make no promises where Visenya is concerned."
"No," Aemon said, offering her his arm. "I suppose none of us can."
She took his arm, and together they left the chamber.
