"How long before I can be transferred to a regular ward?" Ella asked, her voice soft and slightly hoarse.
Carlton looked up from the chart in his hands, a faint smile tugging at his lips. The eagerness in Ella's eyes was impossible to miss. He knew exactly why she was asking.
"Soon," he replied, amusement creeping into his tone. "All your test results came back clear, so there is no need to stay in the ICU."
Ella let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, she nodded slowly. "Okay."
She bit her lower lip, unable to suppress the emotions rising inside her. It was hard to put into words. Right now, more than anything, she wanted to see Alexander. To reassure herself that she was truly awake, that nightmare is truly over.
Carlton watched her expression carefully, the way her fingers twisted lightly against her dress. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Actually," he said after a moment, "I could let him come in while we prepare your room."
