Chapter 13 - Chapter 12 – Here Goes Nothing

Amelie's POV

"So, Amelie, this is your new home," Samuel stated.

"Would it be unprofessional of me to squeal?" I asked when I entered my new office, which is next to Samuel's.

"Ha, ha, ha," he chuckles, "I won't tell anyone if you do. It will be our little secret." He winks.

"Let me just grab a few things from my office; I'll be right back," he says, exiting the room.

I glance around the office. No, my office. I can't believe this is happening. I walk over to the desk and sit in the chair. It allows me to squeal without anyone there. Samuel walks back in mid-squeal. He laughs and shakes his head, and I turn beet red.

"So, Amelie, this is your company laptop and phone," he said, handing both over to me. "I suggest you take your laptop home with you. Sometimes Nathan needs something in the middle of the night. It is best to have it with you so you don't have to go into the office to solve the problem. I learned that very early on!"

"Gotcha," I say.

"As Nathan said, we are really flexible with your hours. The last thing we want to do is stress you out with your university studies. We've all been there, and we know how much of a workload it is," Samuel advised.

"I really do appreciate it, Samuel," I say.

"Honestly, Nathan was extremely impressed by your resume and your group interview," Samuel advises, "You will definitely fit in here. Plus, it might be your chance to get your foot in the door for the future."

"That would be amazing!" I try to speak calmly. "I've always dreamt of working on Wall Street. I dream about being able to give back when I finally have the job of my dreams."

"Michaels Investment Group is a big proponent of giving back. Nathan serves on many advisory boards for charities and financially supports many of them."

"Can I ask you a question off the record?" I ask Samuel.

"Sure," he looked at me quizzically.

"Why doesn't Nathan have a girlfriend or wife?" I blush, "I mean, you know, he seems like the type of guy women swoon over."

Samuel let out a bellowing laugh and shook his head. "I knew that question was coming. I've already seen the way that you look at him."

"Oh my gosh, is it that obvious?" I cover my hands over my face, "Please, please don't say anything to Nathan. I'm so embarrassed."

"Oh no, don't worry. I won't say a thing, and trust me, Nathan is oblivious to it. Women look at him like that all the time. To the point that he has no clue they are interested, as he thinks it's normal. To be honest, I just think he hasn't met the right woman. Many women are only after his money, so he has to be extremely careful."

"That does make sense," I agree, "he probably has to be quite guarded. I know where he's coming from."

We spent the rest of the first day logging into the system, setting up all necessary passwords and programs, and giving me a brief overview of the appointment calendar. It felt good to be in the office. Unfortunately, I didn't see Nathan all day. Samuel had said he was in meetings all day today. Samira had gone with him because Samuel needed to show me the ropes in the office. I felt a big twang of disappointment at not being able to see him today.

I was just about to pack up when my work phone signaled a message. "No one has this number. Who could that be?" I opened the phone.

Nathan: How did your first day go?

Oh, my goodness, Nathan is texting me!

Amelie: It went really well, Dr. Michaels

Nathan: Amelie, how many times do I have to tell you to call me Nathan?

Amelie: Sorry…Nathan

Nathan: That's better. I'm sorry I missed your first day. I really wanted to be there to welcome you officially.

Amelie: Samuel filled my head with so much information that I was hiding in my office all shift anyway.

Nathan: LOL…definitely sounds like Samuel.

Nathan: I'll see you on Wednesday.

Amelie: Great!

OMG, did I just seem over-enthusiastic? That was dumb, Ame.

Nathan: Have a great night, Amelie.

Amelie: You too, Nathan.

Nathan: Oh, by the way, the car is waiting for you in the parkade. Marcus will drive you home.

Amelie: Nathan, that's not necessary.

Nathan: I'm not taking no for an answer, Amelie. Have a safe trip home.

Amelie: Thank you.

Nathan: You're welcome, Amelie.

Sigh. I don't know what's happening. How can standard texts make me feel so giddy inside? I might be a lost cause.

I made my way downstairs to the parkade and was met by Marcus. He drove me home and walked me to my door. Why am I wishing it were Nathan walking me to the door again? I really have to get a grip on these feelings. He's the CEO of the damn company, Ame! Give your head a shake and forget it. Plus, he would never have feelings for someone like you. He's so out of your league. I quickly changed into my PJs, heated some leftovers, and settled in for an evening of trying not to think about Nathan if that was even possible.

My phone goes off as soon as my butt hits the couch.

"Hey, Tiff," I answer.

"What's up, girlie?" Tiff shouts on the phone.

"I just got home from work. What are you doing?" I query.

"Working on my marketing project," she answers. "So, how is work, and how are your bosses?"

I sighed, "There may be a problem."

"What? You're not in trouble, are you?" Tiff asks.

"No, but yes."

"Ame, you're not making sense at all," Tiff laughed.

"I think I might have feelings for Dr. Michaels," I utter.

"You just met him," she asks, confused, "How is that even possible?"

"I don't know!" I state, pacing back and forth, "Every time he's in the same room, I have major butterflies, and any time we touch, there is like this electricity."

"He touched you?" She questioned as if she wanted to jump through the phone.

"Not like that, Tiff!" I proclaim. "When I first shook his hand, I noticed a weird spark. Then he walked me to my door; I swear I was so close to leaning in and kissing him. It felt like a magnet pulling me in."

"Ame, are you sure?"

"I'm positive," I exclaim, "I've never felt anything like this before. I swear my core clenches in his presence."

"Shit," Tiff says.

"I know," I breathe, "I am so fucked.
