Chapter 5 - Essie

{His POV: 11 Days before}

I noticed her walking along side roads alone. She seemed determined and had a purpose in her stride.

Without thinking about the risks I decided to follow her which, provided would prove difficult with such a loud vehicle.

So I'd draw attention away from myself by making myself obvious to her. I dropped a gear, slammed the gas and cringed as I heard my engine begging and pleading for a shift up.

The engine screamed as I slammed the gas, making as much noise as possible. I looked out the window as I passed her...it worked! She was watching me drive past like every other guy that owns a loud car.

I took a left turn at the closest intersection and parked in a grocery store parking lot before getting out in time to see her cross the road and cross again to go right.

I jogged slightly to catch up to her, making sure to keep my steps light and as silent as possible.

I followed her loosely for several minutes before she turned and I lost sight for a moment.

I hurried to round the corner to find...a cemetery. I spotted her crouching beside what appeared to be a fairly new gravestone, her golden brown hair blowing slightly in the gentle fall wind.

I watched as she pulled a bouquet of flowers from her purse, exchanging them with the ones that were previously in the vase at the base of the headstone.

She kneeled infront of the headstone and began to cry. Her breath became ragged as she cried softly, desperately trying to not attract attention.

After over an hour she stood up and left. When she was completely out of sight I walked over to the grave. As I kneeled down I read the headstone.

Here Lies Eliza "Essie" Torrez.

07.08.2008-10.29.2022

Beloved friend and Daughter.

May she rest in piece.

"2022..." I muttered to myself as I looked at the date on headstone. Realization dawned on my face as I realized, whoever this person was...is the cause of that girls mental issues.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Iris' number.

*Ring...Ring...Ring*

"Hello?"

"Tomorrow, get me everything you can on one..Eliza Torrez."

"On it"

*Click*

I slowly stood up, tucking my phone into my back pocket before walking the few blocks back to my car.

{His POV: October 31, 8 Days before}

All hallows' eve, A teenager parents worst nightmare.

Good thing I didn't know where my parents were...or was it? I shook my head as I sat up in my bed, shaking away the drowsiness.

Thinking about my parents always got me lost in the "what ifs" and the "whys" did I ever want to know what had happened to them?

"It's better not to wonder." A voice echoed from the back of my head. "There he is" I say outloud "The devil on my shoulder"

"Sir?" A housemaid asked as I spoke, confused.

I looked up with a start, I'd never afforded myself the luxury of housemaids before, her presence scared me a little.

"Oh...nothing, just thinking is all" I replied as I slipped back into my professional persona with each passing word.

"Do you need assistance getting dressed for the day sir?" The maid inquired politely.

"I'll manage fine on my own, Thanks." I muttered as I stood up and stretched.

"Kill her. She thinks you're weak"

"Shut up"

"But sir...I haven't said anything"

"Right...sorry. You're excused"

I watched as she left, closing the door behind her. I let out a semi laboured sigh as the brass latch bolt clicked into place. I scratched my head in frustration as I looked out the window before me.

I looked for what felt like an eternity. I looked at everything within my vision and yet, I truly saw nothing at all.

After a while I walked into my wardrobe and began to get dressed. I put on my underwear and chose boot cut jeans along with a wife beater.

On top of the wife beater I put on a gray button up. I then grabbed some cologne and spritzed it on my chest and neck.

Completing my outfit by putting a tungsten carbide ring on my left hand, a tactical watch on my right, watch face on the bottom of my wrist rather than the top and finally a golden crucifix necklace.

I walk out of my room and down the long hall into the dining room where a protein yogurt and oats bowl waits beside an Irish breakfast tea.

After breakfast I take a look at my watch "08:26" I nod and head to my office where Iris is waiting outside.

"Morning" I say to her as I pull out the key and unlock the door.

I walk into my office as Iris stands up and follows. I take a seat and speak, "What do you have for me?"

She takes a step toward my desk placing one single sheet infront of me.

"Just a coroner's report." She says after a long pause.

I look at the single sheet semi stunned, Iris had never failed to gain information and now all she's brought to me is a single paper?

"This...is it?" I ask calmly waving my hand over the sheet.

Iris nods and takes a seat across from me. "Everything else I would need to obtain from...interrogations, high security records, FBI investigations..." she pauses before continuing "The story of this.....Eliza Torrez" she shrugs her shoulders and waves her hands to express confusion "It is securely hidden away from the public...highly confidential"

I make a puzzled face as I raise my left eyebrow and furrow the right. "Do you know why?" I ask even though I know she likely doesn't.

"Her father...was a special operations infiltrator that directly served the United Nations."

My mouth dropped as she spoke, an elite solider? That still doesn't explain why her death is so covered up. Why it's as if she never existed.

"Something is wrong here"
