After everything was said and done, Ryoji and Aoko left the office one after the other.
Scáthach watched their retreating backs, her crimson eyes growing deep and thoughtful.
She had explained many things to them, but there was one crucial detail she hadn't mentioned.
The UO (Ultimate One) was a being that transcended the very concept of time. If one were to be born in the future, traces of its existence should already be appearing now, possibly even stretching backward into the past.
And indeed, all signs indicated that the Earth's UO had already come into being.
Someone had interfered with this Singularity's "settings" even before Goetia had created it. That could only mean the person who will become the UO in the future had crossed through time and altered this Singularity's very foundation.
This was something Scáthach, Goetia, and Merlin all agreed upon.
The only question was: Who exactly would that person be? Goetia himself? One of the Beasts? A True Ancestor Princess? A Magician? A Grand-class Servant?
"Then… who will it be, I wonder?"
With a soft thud, the office door closed. Scáthach's red eyes narrowed as she gazed toward where the two had vanished. It had been so long since she had felt this kind of profound thrill.
Don't disappoint me.
"Didn't expect something of this scale to happen… guess I've gotta work even harder now!"
Once they stepped out of the office, Aoko seemed unusually fired up. After cheerfully saying goodbye to Ryoji, she turned and left near the faculty building's entrance.
Ryoji wandered the campus aimlessly for a while, deep in thought, before finally heading off school grounds.
"Come to think of it… why is this place called TYPE-MOON Academy anyway?" He stared up at the golden letters gleaming above the school gate, falling into contemplation. The name carried a lot of weight, not something you'd just slap on a building lightly. Could Goetia have known what that name meant? Or was it… not Goetia who decided on it?
And even more concerning: why on earth was this city called Kinoko Town?! Whoever came up with that had a terrible sense of humor! Didn't they know scaring people like that could actually kill them?!
At the southern edge of Kinoko Town, near the forest, stood an abandoned factory.
"Ah! Mr. Ryoji, you came, iya!" The moment Ryoji approached the entrance, a golden-haired boy appeared from inside as if he had sensed his arrival.
His face was full of admiration, his eyes glowing with unrestrained enthusiasm, the kind of look that made one think of an overly clingy child.
"Did you come to see me? Why don't we make a contract? I can move into your place and protect you around the clock!" The golden-haired boy, Beo, eagerly volunteered himself.
Even though he had been beaten into submission just last night, he had bounced right back and was now completely Ryoji's fanboy. At this rate, he was practically evolving into a bootlicker.
And heaven be his witness, Ryoji had never used charm magic on him. He never used charm on men. That would just be way too weird!
"I'm here to see Touko."
"What, really? But I'm definitely more important than Miss Touko, aren't I?" Beo grumbled jealously under his breath. "Miss Touko! Mr. Ryoji is here!"
He led Ryoji into the factory, shouting at the top of his lungs. From somewhere deep inside came a loud crash-clank-clatter, anyone else might've thought there was a brawl going on.
"What the hell is she doing in there?"
"No idea." Beo answered honestly.
With a growing sense of unease, Ryoji followed him deeper into the factory until they reached the room Touko had turned into her workshop.
Without even pretending to knock, Ryoji kicked the door open and strode in with an "I fear no one" attitude. Because that's just how he was. Pure swagger.
The room was dimly lit and sparsely furnished. Touko stood beside a long table, both hands gripping the corners of her skirt. Her expression looked… oddly tense. Her cheeks were faintly flushed.
Sniff sniff. Beo wrinkled his nose. "Strange smell…"
"Beo, out."
"Eh~?"
"Out."
"…Fine." Beo sulked but obediently left, closing the door behind him with surprising consideration.
"What were you just thinking about?" Ryoji walked over to the bed and sat down, his eyes glinting with a strange amusement as he stared at Aozaki Touko.
"I-I wasn't thinking about anything…"
"Are you lying to me?" Ryoji narrowed his eyes slightly, his tone carrying a dangerous edge.
"I was thinking about you!" Touko's heart instantly tightened. A wave of nervous fear surged through her chest, and before she could stop herself, she blurted the truth out loud, her face flushing hot.
She was terrified of being abandoned; she couldn't bear to show even a trace of disobedience. That single thought completely filled her mind.
"What were you thinking about me for?"
"…" Touko's face turned scarlet as she muttered something under her breath.
Saying something like that out loud, for a twenty-one-year-old woman who'd never even been in a relationship, it was unbearably embarrassing.
As expected, Ryoji, by now, was quite experienced. He fully understood how the human body reacted in these situations.
After being hit by his Charm the night before, Touko had completely fallen. Her mind was full of nothing but Ryoji's image. When he sealed her away in that little vial, she hadn't resisted, and when he released her that morning, she had immediately confessed the location of her workshop. Since returning, she could hardly suppress her longing.
It wasn't just emotional surrender; it was spiritual submission. At this point, if Ryoji told her to die, she would likely do it without hesitation.
"Come here." Ryoji beckoned with one hand, and Touko obediently stepped forward, allowing herself to be pulled into his arms.
"I said a hundred times, and today, I'm going to make it happen!"
That's right. That was exactly why he'd come here. He had every intention of properly punishing her, to make sure no one thought he was someone easy to mess with.
Touko bowed her head meekly. For him, she would endure anything, even silence itself.
…
That night.
Ryoji walked home, holding the leash of a golden-haired dog.
"Big Brother, where did this dog come from?"
"Picked it up on the way. We'll keep him at home."
"Eh? Isn't he dangerous?"
"Nope. He's very well-behaved." Ryoji gave the "dog" a sharp, warning look.
"Speak."
"Woof!"
"Shake hands."
"Here."
Okita Souji stared, wide-eyed. How could a stray dog be that well-trained?
"He can understand human speech," Ryoji said calmly. "Let him guard the yard from now on, just tell him what to do."
"Wow! An amazing husky!"
Beo: "…"
He really did admire Mr. Ryoji. He did. But he hadn't expected that after being brought home, he'd actually be treated like a literal dog, assigned to guard duty!
Still… since it was Mr. Ryoji, he was honored to be his dog. Beo didn't lose confidence. He knew his own power, in the modern world, he was invincible. But Mr. Ryoji was above even that, the invincible among the invincible. Someone truly worthy of commanding him.
So Beo faithfully played the role of a normal pet dog, happily tossing a frisbee back and forth with Souji, feeling strangely proud.
"Looks like the Rakudai side has reached a critical point too…" Ryoji looked up at the starlit sky, murmuring softly to himself.
His thoughts drifted toward his Rakudai counterpart.
