Duchess Anita's lips trembled. "He… he did not live long enough—"
"So he named no one," Anastasia said softly. "Then this accusation rests entirely on speculation."
A few councilors nodded.
"Furthermore," Anastasia continued, "if I wished to harm Duchess Anita, why would I choose such a reckless method? Rumors are uncontrolled. They damage everyone involved—including the royal family. I gain nothing from placing the palace in chaos."
Lord William narrowed his eyes, clearly thoughtful.
King Edward studied Anastasia for a long moment. "And yet you refused to see your father when he came to you."
"Your Majesty, I have no father. This issue is the very reason I was disowned. If there is anyone who does not want people to talk about the incident the most, it is I." Anastasia paused, then looked around the court.
