The chaos of battle had finally begun to settle, the fires still burned, the acrid scent of burning metal was all over the planet, a reminder of the alien violence that had consumed it. The bodies of the Paradragons lay scattered across the streets, their forms dissolving into nothing by a strange darkness, their essence absorbed into the void.
Raven stood next to her companions, her magic still crackling around her, her eyes still burning. She had been fighting for hours, her body aching with exhaustion that seeped into her very bones. Her robes were torn, But she was standing.
Beside her, the Titans had gathered, their bodies battered and broken, their weapons still raised, their eyes still scanning the horizon for any remaining threat. Robin leaned heavily on his weapon, his armor cracked, his face pale beneath the mask. Blue Beetle's armor flickered with damage, its systems struggling to maintain coherence. Beastboy lay on the ground, his body slowly reverting to its human form, his breathing ragged. Starfire hovered nearby, her eyes blazing with green fire.
And then he appeared before them.
Arthur materialized from the shadows like a vision from a dream, his body coalescing from the darkness with the grace of a being who had long since mastered the art of the dramatic entrance. In his cosmic shadow armor that was different now, more refined, more absolute, its edges sharper. His ashen white hair moved gently in the wind. His eyes blazed with violet fire.
The Titans saw him.
And they were afraid, it was not a conscious fear, not the kind that came from recognizing a threat. It was something deeper and primal. There was an energy around him, a presence that seemed to press against their very souls, it made their blood run cold and their hearts pound with a rhythm they could not control.
Robin's hand tightened around his sword, his knuckles white beneath his gloves. His eyes were fixed on Arthur, his mind struggling to reconcile the being before him with the man he had known. His voice was quiet.
"Is that you in there?" He paused, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "I don't know why but I feel like he is... he is not the same. There is something about him now... something that makes my instincts scream at me to run, to hide, to get as far away as possible." Robin thought to himself.
Blue Beetle's armor flickered, its systems struggling to process the presence before him.
"My armor... it is having trouble processing him. It cannot... it cannot sense him properly. It is like he is not there and everywhere at the same time. His energy signature is... it is off the charts. I have never seen anything like it." He paused, his voice dropping to a whisper.
Beastboy, despite his injuries, managed a weak smile. "Hey, Arthur! That was some... kill... cool armor, by the way!" He paused, his voice dropping to a more serious tone. "Seriously, I mean, I have seen a lot of armor in my time. I have seen the best that Earth has to offer, the best that alien civilizations have to offer, the best that magical realms have to offer. But that... that is art. You look like you just stepped out of a cosmic nightmare. In a good way. Mostly. I think.."
Arthur's smile was warm and genuine a crack in the mask of cosmic power that made the Titans relax, just slightly.
"Hey, Garf. Glad you are okay."
Beastboy's eyes widened in surprise. "You... Glad?! Whoa, is that you in there? I mean no offense but..." He paused, his voice dropping to a whisper. "But yeah, yeah, these injuries are nothing. I recover like a bull! You should see the other guy.. I mean the dragon and that fury... Well, you already did. You killed the other guy. Many other guys. Very many other guys. It was awesome to see really."
"Stop being nervous Garf, he is not going to turn you into one of his shadows." Raven stepped forward, her eyes fixed on Arthur's face. She could feel the power radiating from him, could sense the darkness that now flowed through his veins. It was familiar and yet utterly foreign, a presence that was both comforting and terrifying. Her hand rose to his chest, her fingers resting against the cold surface of his armor.
Her voice was quiet, "This overwhelming darkness I sense from you... it is much stronger than before." She paused, her eyes searching his face. "I am sure of this.. What did you do?"
Arthur's smile faded, his eyes meeting hers. "I hate to do this to you."
Raven's brow furrowed in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Arthur stepped back, his form beginning to dissolve into shadow. "You will understand. I will explain what I did to achieve this once I am here."
Raven's voice carried a note of sharp confusion. "What do you mean, once you are here? You are here..."
She stopped.
Her eyes widened.
Arthur's smile returned, warm and genuine. "For now, I am glad that you are safe."
He looked at the others, his eyes meeting each of theirs in turn. "All of you.."
And then he vanished, not in a gust of shadows, not in a swirl of violet light, but in a quiet dissolution, his form scattering into violet dust that faded into the wind.
The Titans stared at the space where he had been, their minds struggling to process what they had just witnessed.
Raven's voice was barely a whisper in realization. "That was not his shadow teleportation..." She paused, her eyes narrowing. "That was a clone.."
"What?! Are you saying the one that just killed the Paradragons is nothing but a clone?" Cyborg said.
"Yes.." Raven said calmly.
Cyborg's systems flickered. "Every time we see him, he is somewhat different, and far stronger..." He paused, his eyes scanning the data. "I have never seen anything like this. His power signature is... it is off the charts. I do not have words for what I am seeing."
Blue Beetle was equally baffled. "Even the strongest of the League members and the Awakened Hunters struggled with these Paradragons. Many took combined efforts to bring down a single one." He paused, his voice dropping to a whisper. "And you are telling me he killed them with a clone of his?"
Robin checked his gauntlet, his fingers moving across the interface. "The threat is gone... The Paradragons are all dead..."
Cyborg checked his own systems. "Holy..."
Beastboy said in confusion. "Guys, can you speak our language?! What is going on?"
"The Paradragons are all gone. Across the world. Not a single one remains alive." Robin said.
Starfire's eyes widened. "All of them? Thousands of them? All gone?"
Raven's smile was small. She understood now. She understood what Arthur had done, even before he would tell her.
Her voice was barely a whisper. "You did that, didn't you... Arthur."
Across the globe, the Paradragons had fallen. Some lay scattered across the streets, their wings broken, their fires extinguished. The sky, once filled with the chaos of war, was now clear, a canvas of pale blue and gold, painted with the first light of dawn.
The Hunters stood in the streets, their weapons still raised, their eyes still scanning the horizon for any remaining threat. But there was none. The threat was truly gone. The invasion was over.
One S rank Hunter, a veteran of countless dungeons, lowered his sword. "Is it... is it over?"
Another Hunter, a young woman with tears streaming down her face, nodded slowly. "I think... I think it is.. I thought this was it.."
A third Hunter, his armor cracked and his body bleeding, fell to his knees. "We didn't even meet a dragon inside a dungeon... and here we are surviving a whole army of them.."
The Shadow Lanterns moved among them, their rings blazing with violet light. Elena, the human Shadow Lantern Commander, her eyes fixed on the sky where the last of the Paradragons had fallen. "The Supreme Commander... He ended this. He saved us all." She said.
The Hunters turned to look at her, their eyes wide with awe.
"Arthur Blackwynd..." one of them whispered. "Just how powerful is he?"
Elena said with absolute certainty. "He is more powerful than you can imagine, Our supreme commander is death incarnate, the protector and sustainer of this universe, I'm sure Darkseid got a clear message today, that Earth is not as weak as he might think."
Superman floated in the sky, his eyes fixed on the horizon where the last of the Paradragons had fallen.
"Darn it Arthur..." He paused, his eyes closing for a moment. "You are going after him aren't you... alone again..."
The Flash stood in the middle of one of the streets in Central City, his body was battered, his speed fading, his breathing shallow. "Holy... he actually did it." He paused, his eyes narrowing.
Themyscira - The Shoreline
Wonder Woman stood on the shoreline, her sword still embedded in the skull of a fallen Paradragon, her hair disheveled. But her eyes burned with the cold fire of a warrior who had faced death and had emerged victorious just now, She pulled her sword free.
"Arthur..." She paused, her eyes fixed on the horizon then she looked down at the dead Paradragon. "Whatever you just did, gave us that moment to destroy them... what an extraordinary warrior, you keep impressing me every single time."
