Spades had been thinking about it since the girl with the speaker exploded.
She'd thought about it through the whole push down the river road. Through every corpse she'd dragged off the crystal walls, every copy she'd sent leaping into the ranks of the dead, every officer she'd shouted at to hold the line. Somewhere under all of it, the thought had been turning over and over, quietly, like a coin rolling across a table.
Now the road was quiet, and the coin had landed.
She stood in front of Jin and looked at him through the spade cut in her mask.
He was looking back at her, calm, a little tired. The girl in red was still holding his sleeve. The boy with the branching roads mask had gone quiet on the ground behind him. A few steps away, Clubs had stopped unwrapping her lollipop. Jun was leaning against his crystal wall, watching.
"What's wrong?" Jin asked.
"Be quiet for a second," Spades said. "I'm thinking."
He went quiet.
