Chapter 68 - A Lost Paige Part 4.1 (Naya)

4.

Naya froze seeing Jin drop the bigger man in one swing. He was not Michelangelo's David. He was a street fighter, a thug, a goon. Taking a man twice his size without slowing down was impossible.

An iron rod slipped from his sleeve to his hand. The world made sense. Naya grinned, sprinting when she remembered she had legs.

Jin was far ahead, the gap increasing.

What was the plan against a man so big his first words must have been 'fee fi fo fum'?

She was slowing, her fear creating a rebellion against her heart, sapping her muscles. The night before was different. It didn't count.

The man holding Paige dragged her out of sight.

Naya drew to a halt.

Jin jumped, disappearing into the spot, leaving her with fatso.

She waited and waited, terror slow dripping into her system.

Was it even been possible to feel so small?

A tadpole in an ocean.

Still nothing.

He hadn't come back.

They were gone.

There was a groan. Fatso was getting up. Without thinking she made a dash to land a kick on his neck. It was caught. Naya tried to pull free but he held tight and lifted. Ten vices dug deep, squeezing, until she screamed.

"Neeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!" Came a voice from nowhere and everywhere at once.

The man turned.

Starting with her shoulders. She twisted, using her hip for balance and power. Her free foot rose following the momentum. Her sneaker connected to the back of his head, dropping him to his knees with a cry.

He clutched his head, she her foot.

The painkillers were put to the test and were in need of reinforcements. But they were worlds away in her back pocket. The reactor would get what adrenaline was there. No button or lever would stop her from uselessly strangling the pain out of her howling foot.

There was blood on her shoe, fatso courtesy of Jin.

Luck, but she couldn't feel it.

Fatty was moving. There was a mean look to him that reached out and strangled her spirit.

She rolled, spinning to her feet and limping away.

"Move away!" Came an avalanche of a voice she dimly recognised. It came from nowhere and everywhere.

"Toad?" She called to no one.

She looked up and dove as 'Toad' landed hard on the concrete with his lackey and Drake under arm like rolled carpets. Kama threw up his hands, Drake landed on his back; Kazuya spun landing on both feet.

She grinned and limped to them, pulling Drake who squeezed her the moment he was up.

"Nice to see you, too" Naya gargled out like the last bit of toothpaste.

It was way too easy to forget how big Drake was.

Fatso eyed Kama and ran, it was impossible to forget how big Kama was. The kid exuded it.

✨ Alternate Example (extra variation)

The roar of a giant, the closing of a gate, and the return of a friend who may not be a friend at all.

Paige's eyes gleam the wrong color, Jin's fury cuts through the haze, and Drake clings to a truth that may already be lost.

The answer could break more than trust—it could break the War itself.
