Chapter 10 - First Mission

6:30 a.m.

Donovan stood in front of the tall mirror, checking his appearance. A classic black three-piece suit with a red necktie, and a silver watch on his left hand. Picking up his black umbrella by the side of the sofa, he took a deep breath.

It'll be fine… I've done this countless times in my "memories"… I'm Donovan Volgard, a brave, fearless Visitor… I'm also a transmigrator…

He chuckled briefly, and exited his apartment. Standing outside the apartment building, he checked his watch and recalled details from his memory.

So… first things first, I have to go to the "Portal Chamber" and get my "Planet Card"… Uh, Planet Cards are a requirement for teleporting to other planets…

Donovan seemed to realize something. Just how advanced is this city? Teleportation technology has already been invented here… If the humans of this universe have already advanced this much, then I wonder what it looked like back in the year 2025…

Snap out of it. I have a mission to do…

He began walking with his umbrella in his right hand. He thought about going on a train to get to the Portal Chamber, but based on his "memories," the train station was further than the Portal Chamber.

While walking, he saw fellow Visitors flying, riding on flying bicycles, and flying on their umbrellas. Donovan realized something.

I have a spell called Flight… Can't I just use that instead of walking?

Then, he tapped his umbrella on the ground, and suddenly, he began levitating.

I can also fly without using the spell and by only using the umbrella, but the Flight spell is undoubtedly better. Non-Mage Visitors fly using their umbrellas, but it's slower than a Mage's Flight spell… He recalled details about how Visitors fly from the original Donovan's memories.

As he got higher and higher, he suddenly heard beeping from the side along with a "Move outta the way!"

Donovan looked to his side, and saw a flying car about to hit him. He felt his heart tighten, and immediately lunged forward, the car passing him by.

As the car passed him by, the car windows opened, and Donovan saw one of the car's passengers flipping him off with the middle finger.

At that moment, he had the urge to hit the car with a Lightning Strike, but he refrained from doing so. He looked at the plate number of the car, and memorized it thoroughly.

TTT3… With a sigh and a shake of his head, he began flying towards the Portal Chamber.

Meanwhile, inside the car.

"Hey, that was totally our fault. We're flying too low, you dumbass!" A girl from the backseat shouted at the driver. She had blonde hair, her eyes black. She was wearing a three-piece suit, a Visitor's uniform.

The girl continued, "You want the cops to start chasing us?!"

Then, the driver replied, "Hey, we're in a hurry, remember?" The driver was also wearing a suit but with no vest.

The man who was dressed in a suit and sitting beside the driver also said, "Hey, uh… I kinda regret giving the guy a middle finger, because I recognized him."

The girl and the driver looked at him, and asked at the same time, "Who?"

The man replied with a sweat, "He's Donovan Volgard! The guy who helped us the last time we were on a mission! Dude, you should fly higher, for goodness' sake! What if we almost hit someone again?!"

The girl's eyes slightly widened, and she grabbed at the driver's hair. "Get us higher!"

The driver groaned in pain, and the car flew higher and higher. "Let go of my hair!"

Donovan arrived at the Portal Chamber, landing on the ground gracefully.

At the Portal Chamber, portals of different sizes were scattered around, with vehicles and Visitors coming out and entering.

The portals were circular-shaped, and in each portal, there were giant mechs made for battle guarding it.

It was bustling with activity and life. Visitors could be seen disappearing instantly with a bright flash of light, giant vehicles or trucks were either carrying the bodies of Annihiliths or giant mechs.

Upon seeing this, Donovan took a deep breath, recalling the "futuristic cityscape" images he saw in his previous life as Leon Valentin that resembled this exact scene.

He then recalled what to do and how to get the Planet Card, which was needed to teleport to a planet.

Then, he began walking, searching for "someone." About ten seconds later, Donovan saw a rather intimidating man with black hair and dark red eyes.

He looked like he was in his 30s… or 40s? The man was wearing a black overcoat with a red scarf on his neck. On the man's right hand was a red metal glove. Donovan immediately searched for this man's name through his "memories," and came to a conclusion.

Mr. Tiero… He's one of the people who briefs Visitors of their missions… A handler…

Donovan approached the man known as Tiero who was wearing a metal glove on his right hand.

Tiero saw Donovan approaching him. Then, when Donovan was near enough, Tiero went first, "Donovan."

"Mr. Tiero," Donovan addressed him formally, using "Mr."

Tiero nodded, and said, "Your mission today is on the planet 843-Karlon-45. Exterminate eight Drone-type Annihiliths. There's also one Reaper-type, but it's optional. Defeating this Reaper will result in an additional reward."

"I'll send someone else to take care of the Reaper-type."

Pausing, Tiero pressed a few buttons on his metal glove. Suddenly, a card appeared, floating on the palm of his metal glove.

He continued, "I advise you to only take care of the eight Annihiliths. You're not yet ready for a Reaper-type."

Upon hearing this, Donovan fell in thought.

I'm not… ready for a Reaper-type? Based on the original Donovan's memories, I've only ever fought two Reapers, but it ended with me passing out and full of injuries…

Donovan inwardly agreed to only exterminate the eight Annihiliths. If his superior was telling him he wasn't yet ready, then he's definitely not ready.

Tiero gave the card that was floating on the palm of his metal glove to Donovan. It was the Planet Card for 843-Karlon-45.

Upon receiving the card, Donovan inserted it on his black umbrella's shaft.

After that, Donovan pressed a button on his black umbrella. The teleportation sequence had begun.

The intimidating Tiero added, "Be quick and precise. Remember your training, and good luck." With a nod, Donovan disappeared with a flash of light.

Tiero continued with his duties, briefing other Visitors of their missions.

In a dark alley, there was a bright flash of light. Donovan adjusted his necktie, tapped his umbrella on the ground, and a small holographic map suddenly appeared.

He saw a blue dot, which represented him, and eight red dots that were gathered around, which were the eight Annihiliths.

Donovan raised his head, taking a moment to look at the planet he was on. What surprised him was that the inhabitants of this planet were humans! They were dressed in old-fashioned clothes, and cars that looked like it was from the 1900s could be seen.

It was a steampunk-themed city. Hot air balloons could be seen high above, followed with blimps or airships.

What the…

Donovan was at a loss for words. Because, how and why does this city resemble an older era of Earth?

What in the world…

He shook his head. He didn't want to think about the how's and the why's. He had a mission to do.

Visitors operate in secret, and must not be seen by the inhabitants of other planets… Uh, so should I disguise myself? Oh, right—

He recalled one of the abilities of his black umbrella. In fact, every Visitor's umbrella has this ability.

Tapping his umbrella on the ground, he immediately turned invisible. This was one of his umbrella's abilities: Invisibility!

In the eyes of others, the alleyway was empty. But in the eyes of Donovan, he could still see himself, but his body had turned transparent.

Walking out of the alley, he dodged the cars and rushed towards the red dots on his holographic map.

But after a while, he slowed down. This was because the smoke had entered his lungs!

Donovan looked up, muttering to himself, "Are those clouds or smoke…?"

Covering his nose, he walked towards his destination.

Suddenly, he heard a voice coming from a boy on a bicycle. It was a newspaper boy. "Extra! Extra! Eldroderon has officially declared war on Varkhos!"

Donovan saw the people's faces fall to utter despair and sorrow after reading the newspaper.

A war is currently happening here…?

Shaking his head, he continued walking.

I shouldn't concern myself with the affairs of this planet… I'm only here to exterminate aliens, nothing more…
