Chapter 400 - Side Story 5.22: Family Outing

Side Story 5.22: Family Outing

---

Adessa's First Outing

Winter was technically here. Though it wasn't as cold as it should be yet.

The sky was grey and the air had a certain bite to it but the streets of Zone 2 were still dry. Most people had stayed indoors for the day. The market was still running but thin. Vendors were bundled behind their stalls and the background hum of the village was quieter than usual. The kind of morning that made most people decide to stay home.

August and Angeline were out anyway.

They walked down one of the wider roads of Zone 2 at an easy pace. August was carrying a woven basket in both arms with a light curtain draped over the opening to block out the cold and the weak winter sun. Adessa was inside, bundled in a small and warm wool blanket. She was awake. You could tell because she stirred when the curtain shifted and the cold air touched her cheek. She made a small sound and then went back to staring at whatever it was she stared at, which was usually nothing in particular.

She was a few months old now. She mostly slept, ate, and needed changing. She operated on a roughly forty-eight hour cycle of those three things in varying order. The one thing she didn't do much was cry without reason. She cried when she was hungry or when she needed changing and not much otherwise. August had appreciated that fact from the very first week. So had Angeline, though she expressed it less.

Angeline walked beside him with one hand resting on his arm. She hadn't gone back to work since she gave birth. There was no rush. The village ran without her for a season and Adessa needed her full attention right now. She was tired the way new mothers were. But she was doing well and seemed glad to be outside.

This was their first proper outing as a family. The first time they had gone somewhere together with the baby that wasn't strictly necessary. Just the three of them, out in the village, with nowhere they had to be. Getting it organized had taken longer than expected because that was what newborns did to your schedule. But they were out now. The morning had stayed cooperable. That counted for something.

What August Had to Tell Her

The reason they were walking outside today wasn't only about getting out of the house.

A few days prior, August had sat down with Angeline and told her everything about his Personal System. Not the pieces he had shared over time since they got together. All of it at once. The full picture. How he came to have it. What it was as best as he understood it. Where its origins pointed when you followed them far enough. He had been meaning to do this properly for a while. It felt like the right time now that they had a daughter.

Angeline had asked her patron goddess about it afterward. She could do that. She had a real connection to her goddess, not just a formal one. The answer she got back was not what she expected.

Her goddess told her that August was blessed by something that sat above any individual god's authority. The cosmos itself. The laws that governed how existence worked at the foundational level, the kind that even gods had to follow and could not simply override. August's power came from that territory. No god had given it to him. No god could take it away. Though a god did allow him to have it as a conpensation well at least for that other soul. But for August he was simply someone the universe had looked at and decided to give something to, for reasons that not even a goddess could fully explain.

One god in particular was watching him with interest, her goddess had added. Not as August's patron. Not with any formal stake in him. Just watching closely. The goddess didn't say more than that and Angeline didn't push her on it.

Aetherwing already knew all of this, of course. He had known for a long time. He just hadn't explained it in quite those terms.

Then there was the second soul.

August told her about that too. The other soul that lived in his body and had never once reached for control of it. It had come into him as a bundle along with the Personal System, into this life and stayed quietly in the background since then. A passenger from another world entirely, one with no overlap with theirs. August had a glimpse of that souls memories. It was provided by his Personal System during times of milestone achievements or in other words when he reached a certain Personal level and upgraded to the next PS Level. In those vividly almost realistic dreams he was transpired to he saw metal wagons that moved on their own without horses or magic. He saw buildings taller than anything the empire had built. A world without magic at all, but with other things filling that role in ways August didn't have the right words for yet. He thought that world was probably more advanced than anything the empire had managed. He was fairly sure it was.

Angeline had taken all of it without falling apart. She thought things through before she reacted to them. That was just how she was built. She had gone quiet for a couple of days after he told her. She came back to it on her own terms when she was ready.

Then he told her about Adessa.

That was the part she was still working through.

It was also why they were walking today instead of dwelling on it sitting at home.

Their Daughter

Adessa Julie Finn had come into the world a few months ago with considerably more than anyone had anticipated.

She had inherited elemental affinities from both her parents. That part was expected. August had Fire as his own original element, Wind and Lightning as his secondary more specifically when he met Aetherwing and they were bonded through his Personal System's interference. Angeline had Light and Water that came from her mastery through equipment base magic. What Adessa had inherited from both of them though was still becoming clear but it was already apparent she hadn't been shortchanged. What nobody had predicted was the rest of it.

Adessa had been born with something that mirrored August's Personal System in structure. It was real. August could see it when he looked at her through the System's lens. But it was currently locked. Restricted in ways he couldn't fully read because his System had acknowledged it but given him very little to work with. The message it had shown him at her birth had been deliberately brief. The only concrete thing it told him was that Adessa had been added to the party system. The same one Angeline was already part of.

What that meant for her going forward August didn't fully know. What it would look like when she got older he couldn't predict. He wasn't sure there was a clear answer for any of it yet. The System would tell him what it wanted to tell him when it decided to.

Angeline hadn't reacted badly when he told her. She didn't panic or shut down. She went quiet and thought about it over a few days the same way she handled anything that needed sometime to process. Today's walk was part of that. August knew it without her having to say so.

At least Adessa herself had no idea any of this was going on. She was currently focused on the curtain over her basket and finding it acceptable to her taste

Café Bonita

Their destination was Café Bonita, a small place near the middle of Zone 2.

It had opened two years ago. During winter it was one of the only places in the village still worth going to outside of the market. Most things slowed down in their operation or went quiet in the cold months. Café Bonita stayed open and warm. It had become the go-to spot for people who had run out of patience with their own four walls. It has a low seating near the windows, a wide counter for the drinks, the smell of roasted Kofii and fresh bread in the air. Good enough that people came back to it every winter.

They went in and took a table near the window.

Kofii was what they ordered. It came from brown cherries grown on Kofii trees, dried and roasted, grounded and brewed into something dark and bitter. August had his with a bit of milk and some of the sweet reduction made from locally grown fruit. Angeline had hers mostly black. With it they ordered fresh bread made from village grain, topped with sliced vegetables and meat from the domestic stock. Wild game was on the menu for people who wanted a stronger gamey flavor. August and Angeline were not those people today.

The shop was warm and mostly empty at this hour. A couple of other people were in, sitting separately, using the place for the same general reason. Nobody bothered anyone else. That was one of the things that made Café Bonita work as a winter spot. You could come in and be left alone, or talk to whoever was around, and both were equally fine.

Adessa had her own spot on the bench beside Angeline in the basket. She was at the age now where things around her were starting to register. She watched the light coming through the window for a while, then looked at Angeline, then at August, then back at the window. She seemed to be conducting some kind of audit with her sureoundings. She was a very serious baby when she wasn't asleep. She did not cry. Crying for her required a specific reason and she held herself to that standard consistently. August and Angeline had both noticed this and neither of them had complained about it once.

She did giggle once, for no visible reason. Just once, out of nowhere.

Both August and Angeline went quiet when she did. August put his hand over Angeline's on the table.

Outside the snow had started coming down. Small and light, not heavy yet. The street was nearly empty. The village's ambient hum had gone softer, the way it did when the weather turned.

It was Angeline who spoke first.

"As long as our child grows up healthy and good, then we as parents should watch over her so that she does grow up into that."

August looked at his wife. He leaned over and pressed a small kiss to her forehead.

"I know, dear. We will both be there for her every step of the way."

Adessa made a sound. Not a word and not quite a giggle. Somewhere between the two. They both looked at her. She looked back at both of them in turn with the expression of someone who had just heard something and was thinking about what it meant.

The mood at the table was considerably better after that. They stayed long enough to finish their drinks and their food and enjoy the warmth for a bit longer before the snow made them think about heading home.

---

Heading Home Through the Market

By the time they paid for theirmeal and stepped back outside the snow was coming down properly.

August tucked Adessa's curtain back into place against the cold. She had fallen asleep and did not register the adjustment. They made their way back through the market district on the way home. It took longer than the cold called for because people kept stopping them.

Neighbors who had heard there was a baby and wanted to see for themselves. A few of them were surprised at how small she was, which was a thing people said about every infant and yet they kept saying it otherwise. One older woman from the Zone 2 residential side insisted on looking at her for a full minute and then declared she had August's eyes. August thanked her. He was not sure that was true yet. Adessa's eyes mostly just looked like baby eyes to him and they are actually split between his and that of Angeline's. So what that granny actually meant he didn't understood.

Vendors who knew both of them well enough to greet them by name stopped for a few words. Some asked about the village business, out of habit more than genuine need since most of them would hear whatever they needed to hear through the usual channels. August gave them short answers. He was technically off duty. Most of them understood that and kept it brief.

People on the other side of the road who just waved and kept going. That was also fine. You couldn't have a full conversation with everyone who recognized you and still get home before dark.

August picked up what they needed for dinner while they were at it. He stowed everything into his item pouch without any fuss. One arm was holding the baby basket, and his other hand was free out of habit, though in this case it was for holding Angeline's own, the groceries disappeared without any visible effort. People who didn't know him well always found it slightly strange. People who knew him were used to it by now.

They passed through the rest of Zone 2 and headed into Zone 1. The snow was still thin but it was starting to stick now. The stone paths had a light white layer on them and the market canopies were going the same way. It was quiet out. Most of the street traffic had already gone home.

---

The Cemetery

August stopped at the cemetery before they reached the house. He did this every day. It was part of his routine by now, not a special event.

He brought flowers and set them at his family's graves, at the markers for Angeline's family, and at Uncle Christopher's stone. The snow had settled lightly over all of them. He brushed it from his parents' without thinking much about it. Just something you did naturally overtime.

Angeline waited nearby with Adessa. She had been coming with him to the cemetery occasionally since they got together and by now she understood how he handled it. He didn't need company right at the graves. He just needed to come, leave what he brought, and say what he had to say.

August stayed for a few minutes. Then he walked back to Angeline and Adessa and they covered the short distance home.

---

Home

The house was warm when they got inside. Adessa woke up during the transfer from the basket to her cradle. She looked at the ceiling for a moment, decided everything was in order, and went back to sleep. She was very consistent about this. The cradle meant sleep. She had understood that from early on.

August put the groceries away and started to cook for the entire households dinner. Angeline sat on the couch and stayed there for a while without moving. She had been on her feet most of the day and had earned it. Outside the window the snow was falling steadily now, building properly for the first time this season. The street lamps in Zone 1 were already lit aflame. The village in its entirety was quiet.

It had been a good day. Their first family outing. The delicious Kofii and bread at Café Bonita, a walk through the market, the cemetery, and home before the snow got heavy. Simple as that.

Hopefully the year ahead will give them more of the same.
