Chapter 236 - Chapter 235: Gender Crisis

---Forest of Death - Clearing---

The scent of roasting chicken filled the small clearing, momentarily masking the smell of burnt wood and ozone left behind by Sasuke's rampage.

Haku sat on a log, watching Sakura turn the spit over the fire she had built. To his surprise, the girl was actually competent at basic survival skills. She had managed to snare a wild hen that had been wandering near the clearing, cleaned it, and seasoned it with some wild herbs she found nearby.

'Perhaps she isn't that useless after all,' Haku thought, taking a bite of the drumstick she handed him. The skin was crispy, the meat juicy. 'She definitely cooks better than Zabuza-sama.'

Sakura watched him eat, nibbling on a wing herself. The silence stretched between them, heavy with the aftermath of the battle. Naruto was still snoring under the tree roots, and Sasuke was breathing evenly in a medically induced slumber Haku had ensured would last a few hours.

"Um..." Sakura started, her voice hesitant. "Thank you. For stopping Sasuke-kun."

Haku nodded, swallowing a piece of meat. "He was out of control. It was necessary."

Sakura hesitated again, fidgeting with her hands. "Can I ask... who are you? I saw your headband, so I know you're a Konoha shinobi, but... I've never seen you around the village or the Academy."

Haku wiped his mouth with a handkerchief. "Just because you never saw me doesn't mean I isn't a Konoha shinobi. The village is large, and shadows are deep."

"I... I guess," Sakura nodded slowly. It was a vague answer, but she didn't dare press him.

"Why did your team participate?" Haku asked, turning the question around. His dark eyes bore into hers. "You are rookies. Fresh out of the Academy. This exam is a slaughterhouse designed for veterans. Your team lacks coordination, and your mental fortitude is... lacking."

Sakura looked down at her half-eaten chicken, her expression crumbling slightly. She sighed, a sound of genuine exhaustion.

"I... I don't know," she admitted softly. "Kakashi-sensei recommended us. We thought we were ready. But after seeing... that..." She glanced at Sasuke. "Maybe we aren't."

Haku didn't offer comfort. He simply ate. Reality was often the best teacher.

Rustle.

Haku's head snapped up. Three figures emerged from the bushes, looking cautious.

"Whoa... what a mess," a lazy voice drawled.

It was Team 10. Shikamaru Nara, holding his hands in his pockets, looked around the scarred clearing. Choji Akimichi was munching on chips, and Ino Yamanaka was staring wide-eyed at the unconscious boys.

"Sasuke-kun!" Ino shrieked, rushing forward but stopping when she saw Haku sitting guard. "What happened? Is he okay?"

"He's fine, Ino-pig," Sakura sighed, the familiar rivalry bringing a bit of life back into her voice. "Just unconscious. We... we got attacked by a team from the Sound."

"Sound?" Shikamaru raised an eyebrow, his gaze drifting to Haku. "And who's this? Another enemy?"

"No!" Sakura waved her hands. "He helped us! He... he saved us, actually."

She paused, realizing she didn't actually know his name. She looked at Haku awkwardly.

Haku stood up, dusting off his pants. "Haku Yuki."

Ino turned to look at him properly for the first time. Her eyes widened. She took in the long, silky dark hair, the delicate facial features, and the graceful posture.

Hearts practically materialized in her eyes. "Oh wow... you're really pretty! Are you a new transfer student? I haven't seen a girl this cute since—"

The hearts vanished instantly as her brain processed the name and the voice.

"...Wait. Yuki? Haku?" Ino blinked. "That sounds like a boy's name. And your voice is... deep."

Haku's eyebrow twitched behind his mask.

"I am male," Haku stated flatly.

"Eh!?" Ino stepped back, looking disappointed. "What a waste! You look totally like a girl!"

"Thanks for the food, Nee-san!" Choji chimed in, smiling happily at Haku as he eyed the leftover chicken bones. "You're really strong!"

Haku froze. Nee-san? Big sister?

A vein popped on Haku's forehead. He forced a smile, but it didn't reach his eyes. The killing intent leaking from him caused the fire to flicker ominously.

"It's Ni-san (Big Brother)," Haku corrected, his voice dropping an octave to sound as masculine as possible.

"Oh, right," Choji crunched on a chip. "Sorry, you just look really pretty."

Haku turned away, putting a hand to his chin.

'Maybe I should grow a beard?' he thought frantically. 'A goatee? Maybe handle-bar mustaches like Alaric-sensei described? No... that would look weird.'

He shook his head, dismissing the horrifying image of himself with facial hair.

"Anyway," Shikamaru interrupted, sensing the dangerous vibe coming from the 'pretty boy'. "We're heading toward the tower. Since your team is down, Sakura, maybe we should stick together? Strength in numbers and all that."

"That would be great!" Sakura looked relieved. She looked at Haku. "Haku-san, will you come with us?"

"No," Haku replied instantly.

He adjusted his vest. "I have delayed long enough. I travel faster alone."

"But it's dangerous!" Ino protested. "You're all by yourself!"

Haku just glanced at her, his eyes holding a cold amusement. "I am not the one in danger."

Without another word, he vanished. A swirl of leaves was all that remained where he had stood.

---

Haku moved through the forest like a gale. He encountered two more teams along the way—one from Kumo, one from Kiri... but he simply bypassed them. He had his scrolls. He had his meal. He had no reason to fight.

He reached the center of the forest in record time. The massive tower loomed ahead, a grey monolith piercing the canopy.

He entered through one of the many gates, finding himself in a large, empty hall. A plaque on the wall read:

If qualities of heaven are your desire, acquire wisdom to take your mind higher. If earth qualities are what you lack, train your body and prepare to attack. When both heaven and earth are opened together, the perilous path will become right forever.

"A riddle," Haku mused. "It just means to open the scrolls."

He pulled out the Heaven scroll and the Earth scroll he had 'acquired' from the Ame team. He tossed them into the air and crossed his arms.

POOF.

Smoke exploded from the scrolls, filling the room.

"Hey! wait!"

A figure coughed, waving the smoke away. When it cleared, Iruka Umino stood there, looking slightly disoriented.

"Congratulations! You passed the second exam!" Iruka announced, putting on his professional smile. He looked at the examinee. "I am..."

He stopped. His eyes widened.

"A-Aren't you Haku?" Iruka blinked. "You're here already?"

"Iruka-san," Haku bowed politely. "I assume I am early?"

"Early?" Iruka looked at the clock on the wall. It was barely noon on the second day. "You're the second arrival. The only ones faster were-"

"-The team from Suna," Haku finished for him, his tone knowing.

Iruka nodded, looking impressed and slightly worried. "Yes. They arrived an hour ago. You did this alone?"

"Yes." Haku said simply.

Iruka sighed, a familiar expression of worry crossing his face. He remembered the arguments in the Hokage's office.

"Well," Iruka smiled warmly. "You passed. Welcome to the Tower, Yuki Haku. Get some rest. The preliminaries won't start until more teams arrive."

Haku nodded and walked past him into the depths of the tower.

'Second place,' Haku thought, a competitive spark lighting in his chest. 'Gaara of the Sand... next time, I won't be just observing.'
