Chapter 270 - Chapter 269: Ice VS Explosion

---Tanzaku Gai - Back Alley---

Haku dropped from the tower. He didn't fall; he accelerated. He became a streak of teal light, his sword drawn in a reverse grip.

"Let's see the level of an A-Rank shinobi."

The words were a whisper to himself, a quiet affirmation as the wind screamed past his ears.

Zero Friction propelled him forward, the ultra-thin layer of ice beneath his sandals turning friction into a forgotten concept. The alley blurred into a tunnel of shadows and lanterns, Ganri's broad form growing larger in an instant.

Ganri's head snapped up at the last possible second... his tracker instincts kicking in, a flicker of chakra sensing the incoming threat. But it was too late. Haku was already there, a shadow slipping through the air like water through fingers.

Haku twisted mid-descent, his body contorting with the fluid grace of the modified Uchiha-style kata. Ganri's arms rose in a defensive cross, chakra surging to his forearms for a potential Blast Counter, but Haku was faster.

The dull side of the Kusanagi blade... infused with a subtle pulse of Ice Release... slammed into Ganri's exposed ribs with pinpoint precision. The impact wasn't meant to kill; it was a calculated strike to stun and reposition.

CRACK.

Ribs protested under the force, not breaking but bruising deeply. Ganri grunted, his breath exploding out in a sharp huff, eyes widening in surprise and pain.

Before he could retaliate, Haku's free hand shot out, fingers latching onto the back of Ganri's hooded coat like iron clamps. With a surge of chakra-enhanced strength, Haku pivoted and hurled the larger man toward the alley wall.

The throw was effortless, Haku's shoulders and refined Taijutsu turning Ganri's momentum against him. Ganri slammed into the brickwork with a thunderous crash, the wall spiderwebbing with cracks as dust and debris rained down. He slid to the ground, one hand clutching his side, his face twisting into a snarl of annoyance rather than fear.

"What the-?!" Ganri spat, pushing himself up with a growl. His eyes locked onto Haku, who had already landed lightly on the balls of his feet, sword at the ready.

The missing-nin's gaze flicked over Haku's slender form, the long hair, the delicate features illuminated by the distant lantern light. A cocky grin split his face, even as pain throbbed in his ribs.

"Well, well..." Ganri chuckled darkly, wiping dust from his chin. "A beautiful little maiden sneaking up on me? You got some guts, girl. But that hurt. Now I'm annoyed."

Haku's expression remained serene, almost polite, but his eyes were cold as glacial ice. He didn't correct the misconception... words were unnecessary. Instead, he turned and flickered away, Zero Friction carrying him out of the alley in a burst of speed that left afterimages in the air.

He needed to draw Ganri out, away from the civilians milling about in the streets. The town was too crowded; one errant explosion could turn this into a massacre.

Ganri's laughter echoed behind him, rough and mocking. "Running already, pretty one? Oh, I'm gonna enjoy this. When I catch you, I'll have some fun with that dead body of yours... make it dance before I blow it to bits!"

The taunt was laced with veteran arrogance, the kind born from years of crushing Jonin squads and walking away unscathed. Ganri slammed his fist into the ground.

BOOM.

An Explosive Evasion Burst propelled him forward in a shockwave of dust and cracked pavement. He wasn't overconfident... he knew a threat when he felt one... but this? A girl who looked like she belonged in a tea house? He'd toy with her first, then end it.

Haku led the chase, weaving through the backstreets of Tanzaku Gai with deliberate precision. He leaped over rooftops, his movements a blend of speed and subtlety, ensuring Ganri could follow but not catch up immediately. The missing-nin pursued with relentless fury, his coat flapping like a dark banner as he used short bursts of explosions from his feet to close gaps, shattering tiles and sending sparks flying.

"Ya trying to lure me, maiden?!" Ganri bellowed, his voice carrying over the rooftops.

Deep down, a flicker of realization hit the Iwa-nin... this wasn't a panic retreat; it was a tactical withdrawal. But it was too late to turn back. His judgment was clouded by irritation and that cocky thrill of the hunt.

The town lights were fading behind them, the outskirts approaching: a sparse forest dotted with rocky outcrops, the perfect arena for a no-holds-barred clash.

Ganri smirked anyway. "Oh well... Fine by me. Out here, no one's gonna interrupt while I paint the trees with your pretty blood!"

---

High above, in the layer of the atmosphere where the air thinned to nothing, Alaric floated effortlessly. His crimson coat didn't even flutter, protected by a thin layer of wind chakra. His enhanced vision pierced the night like a hawk's, tracking the two specks of chakra moving below.

He puffed on his cigar, the smoke snatched away instantly by the high-altitude winds. A small smile played on his lips.

"Atta boy, Haku," Alaric murmured. "Lure the fish out... now reel him in."

This was his student's first real test against an A-rank veteran... Alaric wouldn't interfere, but he'd watch every move, grading the efficiency, the caution. No wounds. Perfection was the standard. 'Oh well, if he does get hurt... that's normal, I guess...'

---The Forest Clearing---

The forest edge was nearing, the trees thick and ancient, their branches forming a natural canopy that blocked out the stars.

Haku skidded to a halt in a small clearing, the ground uneven with rocks and roots... terrain that favored agility over brute force. He turned, Kusanagi held low and ready, chakra reserves humming steadily.

He wasn't winded; months of training had turned his body into a machine of endurance. But inwardly, a thread of uncertainty tugged at him. This wasn't sparring with Alaric or dismantling bandits. This was a veteran, a killer who'd survived the wars, with a Kekkei Genkai that could turn the tide in an instant. Yes, he was marked an A-Rank in the Bingo book, but Haku wasn't stupid to think that being ranked in a Bingo book necessarily means you're limited to that category.

THUD.

Ganri exploded into the clearing moments later, landing with a ground-shaking impact that sent tremors through the earth. He straightened, rolling his shoulders, that cocky grin still plastered on his face despite the ache in his ribs.

"End of the line, beautiful," Ganri sneered. "You got some speed on you... I'll give you that. But now? Now we play for real."

His eyes gleamed with predatory amusement. "Tell you what... surrender, and I'll do your body quick. Or fight, and I'll enjoy every second of breaking that delicate frame."

Haku's response was silence. His stance shifted into the modified Uchiha kata... aggressive yet flowing, ready to integrate Ice Release at a moment's notice.

He wouldn't take damage; that was the rule, the bet. But Ganri's aura was heavy, laced with killing intent that pressed like a storm cloud. The veteran wasn't bluffing... he had killed squads before.

Ganri moved first, his veteran instincts dictating aggression. He charged forward, chakra channeling into his fists.

"Explosive Impact Fist!"

The air hummed with compressed energy as he closed the distance, his steps cracking the ground. "Come on, maiden! Show me what you've got!"

Haku's senses sharpened... air displacement, intent flickering before the muscle twitch. He sidestepped with Zero Friction, a burst of speed that carried him around Ganri's flank faster than the eye could follow.

As the missing-nin swung a haymaker that would have taken his head off, Haku countered.

'Ice Release: Ice Senbon.'

Needles of ice condensed from the moisture in the air, launching in a precise volley toward Ganri's exposed back.

"Explosion Release: Blast Counter!"

Ganri twisted with impossible speed, parrying the Ice Senbons with a point-blank explosion from his palm.

BOOM.

The blast shattered the senbon mid-air in a spray of frost and force. The recoil numbed Ganri's arm slightly, but he laughed it off. "Cute trick! But explosions beat ice every time!"

"Shattering Elbow Strike!" He followed up, thrusting his elbow toward Haku's position. The chakra detonated outward in a concussive wave that uprooted nearby trees.

Haku leaped back, the shockwave ruffling his hair but not touching him.

Close... too close. He felt the heat of the blast on his skin, a reminder that one solid hit could end this.

'Wind Style: Wind Cutter...'

Haku channeled wind chakra through his Kusanagi. The blade hummed as he slashed horizontally, sending razor-sharp arcs of wind slicing toward Ganri.

The veteran dodged sideways with Explosive Evasion Burst, the ground erupting under him as he propelled himself clear. One wind arc grazed his coat, tearing a gash that drew a thin line of blood on his arm.

"Hah! First blood?" Ganri looked at the cut, his cockiness flaring into anger. "You're feistier than you look, girl!"

He slammed his hands together. "Explosion Release: Detonating Barrage!"

He planted his feet on the ground and then... he performed a rapid series of punches and kicks. He wasn't hitting Haku; he was hitting the air. Each strike planted an invisible explosive "seed" in the atmosphere, turning the space around them into a minefield.

Haku weaved through the assault, his precog-like senses guiding him through the invisible web. A kick nearly clipped his shoulder, the explosive seed brushing close enough to singe his sleeve.

No damage... that was good. But the pressure was mounting; Ganri was adapting, his veteran experience forcing Haku to burn more chakra on evasion.

Haku countered by forming hand seals mid-dodge.

"Ice Release: Ice Ball!"

Moisture condensed into a two-meter jagged sphere, which he hurled as an AOE crusher toward Ganri's position.

Ganri punched it head-on. "Explosive Impact Fist!"

CRASH.

The localized detonation shattered the ice into shrapnel that peppered the clearing.

"Boom! That's how you handle snowballs, maiden!" Ganri roared.

But shards embedded in his coat, drawing more shallow cuts. Annoyance crept in... this "girl" was slippery.

The fight escalated.

"Secret Technique: Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals!"

The dome of mirrors formed around them in a flash, faster than when he created this in the past. Haku vanished into one, reappearing in another to strike from blind angles with Ice Senbon and Kusanagi slashes.

"Hiding games? Pathetic!" Ganri roared, swinging wildly.

He snapped his fingers.

KA-BOOM!

He triggered a chain detonation from the earlier seeds he had planted. The air inside the dome ignited. The blast wave shattered several mirrors, sending shards of reflective ice everywhere.

But Haku was already out, repositioning with Zero Friction. A mirror shattered near Ganri, forcing him to evade shards... buying Haku time.

"You're tough," Haku admitted softly, his breath steady but mind racing. This veteran was relentless; one mistake, and those internal detonations could rip him apart. 'However, you're just a stepping stone for me to improve!'

"Water Style: Water Dragon!"

He channeled, drawing from a nearby stream to form a roaring serpent that crashed toward Ganri.

"Ha! Resorting to basic elements!? Earth Release: Earth Wall!"

Ganri slammed his hands down. A slab of rock erupted from the ground, blocking the dragon in a splash of water.

"You know water is weak to lightning, right? I'll dry you up!" Ganri countered with Lightning Release, a bolt arcing through the wet ground toward Haku.

Haku dodged, the electricity crackling past him, singeing the earth where he had stood a microsecond ago.

'Ice Release: Ice Rain!'

Forming a few hand seals, Haku released an AOE storm of needles piercing down from the canopy.

Ganri shielded with Blast Counter bursts, but the sheer volume overwhelmed him. Several needles grazed his cheek and thigh, drawing blood.

"Enough foreplay!" Ganri snarled.

He charged again, landing a near-miss Shattering Elbow that forced Haku to pop his ultimate defense.

"Ice Rock Dome of Magnificent Nothingness!"

The dome formed instantly, blocking Ganri's explosion effortlessly... explicitly anti-explosive as per its dense design.

Ganri hammered at it, explosions ringing out like gongs, but the dome held. "What the hell is this ice?!"

From inside, Haku emerged behind Ganri via a mirror feint he had set up seconds ago.

He was in the air. He held a massive construct.

"Ice Release: Ice Hammer!"

The ultra-large construct swung down, slamming Ganri into the ground with force that could dent a Tailed Beast.

BOOM!

The impact cratered the earth. Ganri coughed blood, his ribs screaming, but his veteran instincts saved him. He fired an explosion from his back, using the force to throw himself away from the crush zone just in time.

He rolled to his feet, swaying.

"You're... not bad, pretty one," Ganri wheezed, his cocky grin fading into a grimace of pain. "But I'll still have my fun with your corpse!"

Haku didn't respond. He was done testing.

He combined Wind Style: Wind Dragon with Ice Flower Shuriken, the dragon carrying frozen projectiles that pierced Ganri's weakening defenses.

As the veteran staggered, blinded by the wind, Haku closed the distance with the Kusanagi on his hand.

A freezing slash across the chest slowed Ganri's movements, the ice chakra seeping into his muscles.

Ganri tried to trigger a final Detonating Barrage, but the freeze delayed his chakra flow. The explosions went off weakly, missing Haku entirely.

With a final, polite thrust... infused with Water Style: Shark Bomb for added force... Haku pierced Ganri's shoulder.

The watery projectile exploded into a shark-like maw upon impact, tearing through flesh and bone with surgical precision. Blood sprayed, painting the grass crimson.

Haku pulled back just enough to avoid a fatal strike to the heart. He followed seamlessly.

"Ice Release: Ice Fang Jutsu!"

He channeled chakra into the wound. Jagged fangs of ice erupted from the point of impact, clamping around Ganri's limbs and torso, encasing him in an immobilizing prison of frost.

The missing-nin slumped against the frozen bonds, his cocky grin twisted into a grimace of absolute defeat.

"You... little..." Ganri rasped, his breath fogging in the cold air, eyes glazing over as the ice sapped his remaining strength. He was alive... barely... for the bounty. Haku had ensured it.

Haku stepped back, unscathed. His kimono was pristine. His breathing was even.

The fight had been challenging; Ganri's veteran savvy had pushed him, forcing adaptations and near-misses that tested his resolve. But perfection held... no wounds, no mistakes.

He exhaled softly, the Kusanagi sliding back into its sheath with a quiet click.

---

Above, in the stratosphere, Alaric nodded approvingly, his cigar glowing faintly against the starlit void. "Good job, kid. Bounty secured. But how will you do when there's a variable in your way?"

---

Haku reached into his pouch for a sealing scroll to bind Ganri fully when a sudden shift in the air pressure alerted him.

It wasn't Alaric.

It was a massive chakra signature, dark and oppressive, approaching from the tree line. It wasn't subtle; it was a storm front rolling in, laced with killing intent that made the forest leaves rustle unnaturally. Haku's senses, honed from blindfolded training, picked up the displacement before the figure emerged.

A pair of green eyes glowed in the darkness.

A low, rumbling voice cut through the night.

"Step away from the bounty, boy. That's my mark."
