I didn't sleep that night.
Not because I'm afraid Marco will come in and kill me, but because I'm afraid if I close my eyes, I'll still see the look on his face when I told him I knew. The mockery. The satisfaction. Like I'd finally caught up to a game he was already ten steps ahead in. Like this was exactly how he wanted it to end.
I stay curled up on the edge of the bed like the sheets might somehow protect me from everything he's said. But nothing does. Not the soft pillow under my head. Not the silk robe I haven't bothered to take off. Not the moonlight coming in from the windows. I couldn't leave that morning, because he hid my car.
Morning comes like a punishment. I walk straight to his room.
