Mike arrived within the hour, finding Karlos pacing his bedroom like a caged animal.
"What happened?" Mike asked, closing the door behind him.
"I think I made a terrible mistake." Karlos ran his hands through his hair. "Or Kate wants me to think I did. I don't... I don't know what's real anymore."
"Start from the beginning."
Karlos told him everything. The drinking. Kate's kiss. Passing out. Waking up in his bed naked with no memory of how he got there. And Kate's claim that they'd slept together.
"Do you believe her?" Mike asked when he finished.
"I don't know." Karlos sank onto the edge of the bed. "I was drunk. Really drunk. But Mike, I would never—Berlin is lying in a hospital bed, and I would never—"
"I know." Mike's voice was firm. "Karlos, I've known you for years. You're not that guy. Even drunk, even grieving, you wouldn't betray Berlin."
"Then why would Kate say we did?"
Mike was quiet for a moment. "Because she wants it to be true. Or because she's lying."
