Chapter 25 - Chapter 24: Date? (2)

Sorry for the lack of consistency in my updates. Between college, some financial problems, and family issues, writing has become extremely difficult. I've been doing my best whenever I have bursts of creativity. Even though I've reached a point where writing has become a bit exhausting, I also have a strong desire to continue my stories. I love writing, creating stories that entertain others, so much so that I've been doing this for four years.

I get depressed whenever I can't finish a chapter, or when I write a terrible chapter. I've been trying to improve, and fortunately, I've had bursts of creativity over the last few days. I'd like to release chapters more consistently, but it's unfair to my supporters to release them when I have so few chapters on Patreon. I'm going to work really hard this week so that, before my University term starts again, I can maintain a consistent update schedule for the following month.

Thank you for following this story, and if you can, please check out my Patreon if you'd like to support me. See you in the next chapter, which, if all goes well, will be out soon.

Raynare was furious. In fact, she felt she'd never been this angry in her entire life.

Her plans had been delayed, her timeline stretched to its limit, and one of her subordinates had been killed.

All thanks to a magician who appeared out of nowhere—living in a dusty house and wearing filthy clothes like some damned vagrant.

Raynare seethed with frustration at herself for not eliminating him the moment she located him.

Leaving the job to others... It was obvious this wouldn't end well.

"If you want something done right, do it yourself."

She should've followed that saying from the beginning.

What a disgrace. So much planning, only for things to end like this.

And to make things worse, she hadn't received any updates from her other two subordinates since the previous night, when they'd been sent to finish the job once and for all.

For a moment, she considered that they might have been taken out.

But that should be impossible, right? A single human magician defeating two fallen angels? And on top of that, a magician who didn't even seem that powerful?

Raynare refused to believe it.

Still, whether she believed it or not, she couldn't afford to waste any more time. The ritual had to be prepared before sunset.

She would have to act herself.

"...!"

Just as she steeled her resolve, sitting on one of the pews in the old church, she turned her gaze upward as the soft sound of wings reached her ears.

Mittelt. She recognized her instantly.

Her subordinate descended with grace, her wings fluttering softly as she landed in front of her.

Raynare's expression twisted into a sharp, commanding smile.

"What happened? Why did it take you so long? And where's the girl?"

Mittelt looked tense, but Raynare dismissed it, assuming it was due to the delay.

"Apologies. The fight with the human ended up being more difficult than expected. It drew the attention of the devils at the school," Mittelt explained.

Raynare nodded. She had no reason to doubt her words. "Is he dead?"

"Yes."

"Then I don't care. Where's the girl?"

Mittelt swallowed hard. "Kalawarna is hiding with her in a secure spot in the city. The devils are on high alert, so we couldn't risk moving her."

Raynare narrowed her eyes, but not enough to become suspicious. After all, there was no reason for Mittelt to betray her—both of them were working toward the same goal. "Bring her before sunset. Don't be late."

With that order and a wave of her hand, Raynare dismissed her.

Mittelt gave a firm nod before flying off into the sky.

In the end, her subordinates had proven capable…

And finally, the source of her headache was gone.

Maybe she should have a bit more faith in them—

Nah.

. . .

In the bustling city center, Adam suddenly sneezed.

Saki, walking beside him, looked up with concern.

"Are you catching a cold? We can go home if—"

"No, no." He cut her off. "Don't worry. I think someone's just talking about me."

"Oh, right." Saki nodded as if she genuinely believed in that old superstition.

The two of them continued walking in silence—not out of discomfort, but something else.

Saki was simply too shy. Not just because she was walking beside Adam, but also because of her new look. Meanwhile, Adam stayed quiet on purpose.

It was a little training exercise.

It was obvious she wanted to talk—he could practically see it in her expression and gestures—but nerves held her back.

She needed to overcome that, and encouraging her to initiate conversation felt like a good start.

Of course, if she failed to, Adam wouldn't hesitate to speak up. He wasn't about to ruin her day over something so trivial.

So in a peaceful—if unintentional—silence, the two of them strolled side by side. People around them turned to look.

Adam was striking, with a beauty that could only be called supernatural. It was no wonder he drew attention.

But Saki wasn't plain either. Her light makeup enhanced her natural features, and her navy blue dress made her look pure and charming—almost angelic. Together, they were a pair that inspired both admiration and envy.

Saki noticed the stares and grew more nervous. Adam didn't mind—he was used to it—but he realized it might be overwhelming for her.

So he quickly led them into a nearby café.

Saki seemed surprised by the sudden change of setting, but followed without protest as Adam guided her to a table and pulled out a chair for her.

"Thank you," she said with a shy, sweet smile.

"You're welcome," he replied, sitting across from her.

Adam watched her look around curiously. The place was cozy—your typical café where people came to work, relax, or meet friends.

Saki clearly wasn't used to this kind of place. She usually went straight home after school, after all.

"You can order something if you'd like." Adam gestured to the menu.

She was caught off guard but picked it up. The moment her eyes caught the prices, she raised her hands in panic.

"N-No need! I'm not even hungry!"

Adam narrowed his eyes. "Did you have breakfast today?"

"Y-Yes—"

Growl.

Her stomach betrayed her before she could finish.

Her face turned bright red.

Adam smiled, motioning to the menu again. "Don't worry about the prices. Get whatever you like."

Adam didn't have a job, but thanks to the previous Adam's accumulated wealth, he had enough to live comfortably for a while. It might not be enough for a house, but he could afford to splurge for a few months without worry.

Besides, he still had a few artifacts stashed away—jewels from ancient Greece that could easily be sold for a good sum.

"I... okay," Saki replied, still flustered but now smiling a little as she browsed the menu. She hesitated at the prices again, but this time, under Adam's warm gaze, she chose something carefully.

While she deliberated, Adam looked around the place. It had changed a bit from when he was last awake, but a café was still a café.

"U-Um… Hello."

Adam blinked and turned to see a girl in a cute apron standing beside their table. She had a small notepad in hand and looked nervous—especially when their eyes met, prompting her to quickly look away.

Adam was handsome, sure, but he was starting to wonder if his looks really affected people this much.

"What can I get you today?" she asked timidly.

She seemed so young that Adam found himself wondering about Japan's part-time work laws.

She couldn't be older than 14.

To Adam, most people looked like children—but 14? That was basically a newborn to him. He couldn't help but feel a little protective.

"I'd like a tonkatsu sandwich and a cup of hojicha tea, p-please," Saki said suddenly.

Adam turned to her, surprised. Despite the slight tremble in her voice, she looked the waitress dead in the eye—almost defiantly.

The girl, startled by Saki's intense gaze, quickly jotted down the order. "R-Right! And for you, sir?"

Adam glanced at the menu once and answered, "A slice of strawberry cheesecake and a cup of coffee. That'll be all for now."

"Right away." She bowed and left.

Once they were alone again, Adam leaned forward with a playful smile.

"So… you really didn't hold back when I said you could order anything, huh?"

"What?" Saki's eyes widened in panic. "I-I can cancel the order if—!"

Adam chuckled. "I'm joking."

Her body instantly relaxed, a relieved sigh escaping her lips—followed by an adorably pouty expression.

"We're friends. I'd never deny you a meal, so don't get so flustered."

Simple as the words were, they made her cheeks heat up again, and this time she smiled—a warm, grateful smile—as she looked at him with a faint sparkle in her eyes.

"Thanks for saying that…"

"Anytime."

A peaceful silence settled between them, full of mutual understanding. Saki searched for a topic to keep their conversation going—this time, more relaxed.

"So… you forgot we were going to an arcade, didn't you?"

"...?"

"Maybe a dress wasn't the best outfit for a place like that."

"!!!"

"I'm kidding again. You look beautiful."

"..."
