Chapter 42 - Chapter 42 : The trun

The adrenaline from the jaeahn's veins as they walked through the car. The cool air hit her face, but she didn't feel cold. She felt alive. She turned to Jongsuk, a sudden, sharp glint dancing in her eyes.

"You know what, Jongsuk?" she started, her voice laced with a playful yet dangerous edge. She stopped right by the driver's side door, tapping her fingers against the roof of the car. "I've got a good plan. Ask me why."

Jongsuk pulled his jacket tighter around his shoulders, looking at her with a mix of exhaustion and caution. "Jae Ahn, please. You just survived a knife attack "

"Jongsuk," she interrupted, leaning closer, her eyes locked onto his. "Ask... why."

Jongsuk sighed, rubbing the back of his neck in defeat. "Fine. Why, Jae Ahn?"

A confident grin spread across her face. "Look. The person we dialed earlier the one who answered the phone he isn't the killer. He is someone who knows who the killer is. If you remember, that's the number we extracted right from the killer's phone log at the crime scene. That means this guy is connected. He is the bridge between the ghost with your face and the murder. He is someone really, really important to this case."

Jongsuk nodded slowly, the logic sinking in. "Okk... so what's the plan?"

"Okkk, let's start the car and head straight to the office first," Jae Ahn said, her tone suddenly shifting into something business like and abrupt. "I have something I need to bring from my desk."

Jongsuk frowned, opening the passenger side door. "What file? What do you need to bring from the office at this hour?"

Jae Ahn didn't answer right away. She just tossed him a mysterious look as she slid behind the wheel. "Just gooo. You'll find out when we get there."

The White Car

Some moments later, they drove through the bustling city streets, heading directly toward the central police and investigative division office building. The ride was quiet, but the air inside the cabin felt charged with a strange, nervous energy. Jae Ahn parked the car near the side entrance, stepped out without a word, and marched inside.

Jongsuk waited by the vehicle, pacing back and forth on the asphalt, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. Every shadow in the alley felt like a threat. Five minutes later, the glass doors swung open and Jae Ahn walked out, holding a thin, yellow Manila folder in her hands.

Jongsuk rushed up to her. "What file did you have to bring? Is it related to the footprint analysis?"

Jae Ahn paused on the steps. She looked down at the folder, then raised her eyes to meet his. A small, chilling smirk pulled at the corner of her lips.

"What file?" she said softly, her voice barely a breath. "It's just an excuse."

Jongsuk stopped in his tracks, completely spooked. His eyebrows shot up, his heart skipping a beat. "An excuse?! What do you mean, an excuse? What are you talking about, Jae Ahn?"

Jae Ahn's smirk faded, replaced by a deadly, hyper-focused intensity. She leaned in close so her voice wouldn't carry across the street.

"Didn't you notice?" she whispered tightly. "That white sedan. It's been tailing us from the exact spot we started driving from this morning. It's been three cars behind us the entire time."

Jongsuk's stomach dropped into a cold abyss. He instantly started to turn his head to look down the street, his body trembling with sudden panic. "What?! And you're telling me this now?!"

"Don't look!" Jae Ahn barked in a hushed tone, catching his arm with a firm grip to hold him in place. "Act natural. We're not going back home, Jongsuk. We're going to follow the ones who are following us. Okkk?"

Jongsuk stared at her like she had lost her mind. His brain scrambled to process her words. "Huhhhhh? Mean... how?! How are we going to follow someone who is literally watching our every move right now?"

"Just sit and watch," Jae Ahn smirked again, the sheer thrill of the gamble lighting up her features. "I'm doing this just to confuse them. Look, I don't know who is inside that white car. Maybe it's the guy who sent me that panic message on the phone. Maybe it's the guy with the killer. Or maybe it's someone else entirely..."

She didn't give him time to finish his thought. She dragged him back into the car, slamming her door shut.

The High-Speed Chase

The moment Jongsuk clicked his seatbelt into place, Jae Ahn slammed her foot straight onto the accelerator.

The engine roared to life like a cornered beast. The tires shrieked against the pavement, burning rubber as the car launched forward out of the parking space. Jongsuk was thrown backward into his seat, his hands frantically reaching out to grab the dashboard and the ceiling handle.

"Jae Ahn! What are you doing?!" he yelled over the sound of the straining engine.

Jae Ahn didn't answer with words; her eyes were fixed entirely on the rearview mirror. The speedometer needle flicked wildly upward.

50 kilometers per hour... 70 kilometers per hour... 90 kilometers per hour...

The city blurred outside the windows—a dizzying streak of gray buildings, yellow streetlights, and startled pedestrians. Jae Ahn wove through the morning traffic with terrifying precision, cutting off delivery vans and blowing through narrow intersections.

Jongsuk's knuckles were stark white as he clung to the door handle, his breath coming in short, terrified gasps. He looked over at her ,,her knuckles were locked onto the steering wheel, her face a mask of fierce, unyielding determination.

She glanced at his terrified face for a fraction of a second and let out a short laugh. "Hey! Be a man! Why are you so afraid?"

Jongsuk couldn't speak. He couldn't even formulate a sentence. He just sat there, wide-eyed, staring at Jae Ahn in absolute disbelief and awe. She was completely fearless, riding the razor's edge between life and death just to force their stalker into making a mistake.

Suddenly, Jae Ahn noticed the white car in the rearview mirror reacting to her sudden speed. The driver of the white car, realizing they were losing their target, hit their gas pedal too. The white sedan aggressively cut across two lanes, accelerating rapidly to keep up with them.

"They bit the bait," Jae Ahn growled through gritted teeth.

Seeing the white car accelerate, Jae Ahn pushed her own foot down even harder, engine roaring as she chased the flow of the pursuit, turning the hunter into the hunted. She executed a sharp, sudden hard-right turn into an industrial district, the tires screaming as the vehicle drifted dangerously close to the concrete barrier.

The Den of Vice

After ten agonizing minutes of high-speed maneuvering through a maze of desolate factory roads, the white car finally slowed down and turned into a rusted, dead-end alleyway behind an abandoned textile warehouse. Jae Ahn killed her headlights, coasting silently into the shadows a hundred yards behind them.

The white sedan came to a complete stop near an unmarked, heavy steel door guarded by two massive men in dark clothing.

"We reached where the car stopped finally," Jae Ahn whispered, her breath fogging up the cold window pane.

Through the tinted glass, the place looked grim, dangerous, and deeply illegal. The air around the warehouse smelled of stagnant river water, exhaust fumes, and cheap tobacco.

"Don't get out of the car yet," Jae Ahn commanded softly, placing a hand on Jongsuk's arm. "We see first where that boy goes."

From the passenger side of the white car, a young man stepped out. He was wearing a dark hoodie pulled low over his forehead, his shoulders hunched nervously. He exchanged a quick, hushed word with the guards at the door, handed them a thick stack of cash, and was immediately slipped inside the dark building.

"Okk," Jae Ahn said, her eyes darkening. "He's in. Let's go."

They quietly slipped out of their vehicle, crouching low as they darted through the shadows toward the perimeter of the building. Finding an unlocked side entrance where a rusted ventilation grate had been pried open, they managed to slip inside unseen.

The moment they stepped through the threshold, a wall of sound hit them like a physical force.

It was a deafening roar of shouting men, the metallic clinking of betting coins, the smell of blood, cheap liquor, and heavy sweat. They were standing on an upper catwalk overlooking a massive, underground arena. Down below, surrounded by a makeshift cage of chain-link fence, two men were brutally beating each other bloody in an unsanctioned, illegal fight club. Hundreds of high-rolling criminals, gang members, and shadowy figures were screaming from the sidelines, throwing money into the air.

Jae Ahn looked down at the chaotic sea of criminals, then turned to Jongsuk. "There are too many people here. If we stay together, we'll draw attention. We need to spread out to find that guy."

Jongsuk looked around at the intimidating crowd, his pulse racing, but he knew she was right. "Okk. Be careful, Jae Ahn. If anything goes wrong, get out."

"You too," she said firmly. "Look for the hoodie."

They split up, disappearing into the dark, pulsing veins of the illegal arena.

The Secret Room

Jae Ahn moved like a ghost through the upper perimeter, keeping her head down and avoiding the drunken spectators clinging to the railings. She followed a long, poorly lit corridor that led away from the noise of the fighting ring, deep into the heart of the warehouse management section.

She reached a heavy, wooden door labeled PRIVATE. The lock had been picked or left unlatched. Jae Ahn pushed it open, stepping into a spacious, dimly lit secret room. It looked like an executive office for the ringmasters—filled with leather sofas, locked safes, and wall-mounted security monitors displaying camera feeds from around the complex.

Jae Ahn crept forward, her eyes scanning the desk for documents, ledger books, or anything that might tie this illegal operation to the murder case.

Clack... clack... clack...

Jae Ahn froze instantly.

From the hallway outside, she heard it—a faint, muffled whisper of two voices, accompanied by the distinct, echoing sound of heavy leather dress shoes clicking against the hard tile floor. They were coming straight toward the room.

Her heart hammered against her ribs. There was no time to run back out the door. She looked around frantically for a hiding spot. Across the room stood a massive, antique wooden cupboard used for storing liquor and spare suits.

Without making a sound, Jae Ahn sprinted to the cupboard, slipped inside, and pulled the wooden louvers nearly shut, leaving only a tiny crack to look through. She held her breath, squeezing her eyes shut for a second to calm her racing pulse.

The heavy door of the secret room swung open.

A man walked in. Jae Ahn's breath hitched in her throat as she peered through the wooden slats.

He was a towering figure—at least six feet tall—wearing a tailor-made, pitch-black overcoat over an expensive suit. He looked like a high-flying corporate executive or an elite mob boss, radiating an aura of wealth, power, and absolute danger. He stood in the center of the room, his back turned slightly toward her, pulling a silver cigarette case from his pocket.

Jae Ahn stayed completely motionless in the dark cupboard, not daring to let out a single breath, watching the mysterious man's every move.

The Blow in the Dark

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the underground facility, Jongsuk was navigating through a dense, smoke-filled hallway on the lower level near the fighter preparation rooms.

The roaring of the crowd was muffled here, replaced by the sound of dripping water and distant, metallic thuds. Jongsuk kept his eyes peeled, scanning every face, looking for the boy from the white car.

As he turned a sharp corner into a narrow, desolate passageway, he heard voices ahead. Two men were standing near a exposed concrete pillar, talking in low, urgent tones.

"Is the shipment secured?" one voice asked.

"Yes, but the police are sniffing around the perimeter. We need to move him tonight," another voice replied.

Jongsuk paused behind a stack of wooden crates, his heart hammering in his chest. He slowly peeked around the corner to see who was talking on the floor.

The man turned around to face the dim light bulb hanging from the ceiling.

The moment Jongsuk saw the man's face, his entire world stopped. His eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing horror. Blood seemed to drain completely from his face, leaving him cold and breathless.

A face.

The man standing under the light was blur .A blur face but facial structure, the jawline, the hair it was like looking into a twisted, evil mirror.

Jongsuk stood frozen, completely shocked, his mind screaming in confusion and terror as he stared at something not real.

Creak.

Jongsuk didn't even have time to turn around. He didn't see the shadow that had crept up behind him in the dark corridor.

BAM!

A heavy, brutal blow from a blunt weapon smashed straight into the back of Jongsuk's head.

Pain exploded across his skull in a flash of blinding white light. His knees instantly gave out, buckling under his weight. His vision blurred, swimming with dark spots as the floor rushed up to meet his face. He hit the cold, filthy concrete with a dull thud.

As the darkness swallowed him whole, the last thing Jongsuk heard before falling completely unconscious was the slow, deliberate sound of footsteps stepping over his limp body.
