The next morning, after Mabel Quinn picked up her daughter from Jeremiah May's place, she naturally thanked him over and over. Just as Jeremiah May was about to head out, he ran into Old Master May.
"Yesterday Mr. Kinston and his wife went to your room—what did you all talk about?" Old Master May asked.
Jeremiah May didn't hide anything and roughly told him what had happened. After listening, Old Master May clicked his tongue in amazement. "So that little one really stops crying about the pain the moment you touch her? But once you're not touching her, she hurts again?"
Jeremiah May nodded. "Uncle, do you know what kind of illness this actually is?"
"That I don't know. It's the first time I've ever heard of such an illness," Old Master May said. "But the world is vast and full of wonders; there will always be strange things that we've never known of before."
Hearing this, Jeremiah May said nothing more and got into the car to head to school.
