Chapter 9 - Stand-Off

The waiting area behind the arena was alive with tension.

Students murmured among themselves, some stretching, others lost in deep concentration.

Air smelled of polished steel, sweat, and the faint ozone scent that always lingered before a big match.

Takeru leaned against a concrete pillar, arms crossed, eyes darting between the large screen showing the tournament brackets and the competitors in the room. His stomach was in knots.

Akari Itsuno sat on a bench beside him, casually flicking a small flame between her fingers, her golden eyes gleaming with amusement.

"You nervous?" she asked without looking up.

Takeru scoffed. "For myself? No. For you? Maybe."

Akari smirked. "Cute. But you should be worrying about your own match."

He let out a sharp breath, rubbing the back of his head. "I don't even know when mine is yet. They're announcing matchups any second now."

She let the fire between her fingers dissipate and stretched, rolling her shoulders. "Oh, right. I forgot to mention-"

Before she could finish, the loudspeakers crackled to life.

"FIRST MATCH, AKARI ITSUNO VERSUS RYO TOUMA."

Takeru's head snapped toward her. "What?"

Akari simply grinned, standing up. "Told you I forgot to mention."

Takeru stared at her. "You're up first?"

Ryo Touma was a monster. One of the highest-ranking students. His strength alone could level the battlefield if he got serious.

Akari placed a hand on his shoulder, her expression suddenly more serious. "Relax. I can handle him."

Takeru exhaled sharply, shaking his head. "I know. But still…"

Before Akari could respond, an eerie silence settled around them. The background chatter of students dimmed as a group of figures approached.

They were heroes, but not the kind from the glossy magazines or the academy's recruitment posters.

These ones were differentc grimy, rough around the edges, their uniforms patched together with mismatched gear.

The one leading them was a tall, gaunt man with sunken eyes and a scar running down his cheek.

The second was shorter, stockier, with an unsettling grin that didn't quite reach his eyes. His hands were wrapped in thick, reinforced gloves, and his mask, half-metal, half-fabric, hid most of his face except for his piercing gaze.

They stopped in front of Takeru and Akari, the taller one locking eyes with Takeru.

"You're Takeru, right?"

Takeru stiffened. "Yeah. Who's asking?"

The man's gaze was sharp, almost dissecting. "You should quit. Walk away from this Academy now."

Akari's eyes narrowed. "Excuse me?"

The shorter man chuckled. "We're just looking out for the kid. His team's already got eyes on him."

Takeru's stomach twisted. His team?

The taller hero crossed his arms. "They're watching. And they don't like loose ends."

Takeru clenched his fists. "I don't know what you're talking about."

The shorter hero tilted his head, amusement flickering in his expression. "Oh, but you do. They won't let you walk out of here in one piece."

Akari stepped forward, heat radiating off her. "Alright, enough cryptic bullshit. Who the hell are you two?"

The taller hero sighed. "Doesn't matter. Just think of us as people who know things. Things that could save your friend's life." He looked directly at Takeru again. "You're not ready for what's coming."

Takeru gritted his teeth. "I don't care. I'm not backing down."

The two heroes exchanged glances. Then the taller one shook his head. "Then you'd better be ready when they come for you."

Without another word, the two turned and disappeared into the crowd.

Takeru felt Akari's gaze burning into him.

"You know what they were talking about, don't you?" she asked.

Takeru exhaled through his nose, eyes dark. "Not now. Focus on your fight."

Akari frowned but didn't push further. She simply nodded and turned toward the arena entrance.

Takeru watched her go, his fists still clenched.

The matches were just beginning.

And so was the real danger.

The arena buzzed with restless energy. The crowd murmured in anticipation, their excitement thick in the air.

Takeru swallowed, his stomach twisting into tight knots. His hands gripped the cold metal railing as he watched the stage below.

"Akari Itsuno versus Ryo Touma!"

The moment Akari's name was called, the atmosphere shifted. All eyes turned toward the battlefield as she stepped forward, her usual confident stride unwavering.

Takeru exhaled slowly, trying to ease the unease creeping through him. He knew how strong Akari was. He had seen her train relentlessly, pushing herself past her limits.

Ryo cracked his knuckles, rolling his shoulders with a smug grin. "Didn't expect to fight you this early, Itsuno. Guess I'll just have to crush you now instead of later."

Akari's lips quirked into a smirk.

A buzzer blared.

The moment the match started, Ryo lunged, his entire body radiating power. The ground beneath him cracked as he shot forward like a cannonball, his fist gleaming with energy.

Akari barely dodged, rolling to the side just as his punch obliterated the stone tiles where she had been standing. Dust and debris flew everywhere.

Takeru's breath hitched. That was close.

Akari retaliated instantly, flames spiraling around her fingertips before she flicked them forward. A surge of fire roared toward Ryo.

But Ryo grinned. He slammed his fists together, generating a concussive blast that extinguished the flames midair. "You're gonna have to do better than that."

Without warning, he launched forward again, throwing a flurry of punches. Akari twisted and weaved between them, her movements precise and fluid. The sheer force of his attacks created shockwaves that shook the arena.

Takeru's grip on the railing tightened. His heart pounded as he watched Akari maneuver through the relentless assault. She was fast, faster than she had ever been before.

Then, in a split second, she changed tactics.

A sudden gust of wind exploded around her. Ryo's next punch was thrown off-course as the air itself seemed to shift.

Akari smirked.

With a flick of her wrist, a vortex of slicing wind spiraled toward Ryo. He barely had time to brace before the attack slammed into him, sending him skidding backward.

The crowd gasped.

Ryo gritted his teeth. His body pulsed with golden energy as he stomped the ground, stabilizing himself. "Alright, Itsuno," he growled. "No more holding back."

His muscles tensed. The air around him distorted as his power surged. The moment his foot left the ground, he became a blur.

Takeru's stomach twisted. He could barely track Ryo's movements.

Akari, however, was ready.

She took a deep breath, fire and wind spiraling around her in perfect harmony. When Ryo reappeared, his fist inches from her face, she moved.

A devastating collision shook the arena.

Flames erupted. Shockwaves exploded outward. The sheer force of their clash sent debris flying.

When the dust settled, only one figure remained standing.

Akari.

Ryo lay on the ground, unconscious. The referee rushed forward, confirming the match's result.

"Winner - Akari Itsuno!"

The stadium erupted into cheers.

Takeru exhaled, his heart still hammering. Relief washed over him as he watched Akari dust herself off, her gaze sweeping across the arena before landing on him.

She smirked and gave him a small, almost teasing nod.

Takeru shook his head, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Show-off."

After the match, Takeru pushed his way through the bustling crowd toward the locker rooms. He had to make sure she was okay.

He found Akari sitting on a bench, unwrapping the bandages on her hands. She looked up as he entered, raising an eyebrow. "Took you long enough."

Takeru crossed his arms. "What the hell was that? You nearly gave me a heart attack."

She smirked. "Oh? Was Takeru worried about me?"

He scowled. "Of course I was. That guy was a monster."

Akari laughed softly, rolling her shoulders. "I handled it."

Takeru sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah, you did. Still, next time, don't make it look so damn close."

Akari smiled, something softer in her expression now. "I'll try."
