Chapter 37 - Smoke and Mirrors

Smoke and Mirrors

With the processing plant destroyed, Gerard and Jian must track down Drake's new location. But Horizon's resources run deep, and every move they make is watched. Meanwhile, Meiying's manipulation of her mother's empire begins to yield its first fruits.

22:00 – Outside the Ruins – Scorched Earth

The night air was thick with the acrid scent of dust, metal, and burning oil. The collapsed processing plant lay behind them, its twisted wreckage half-submerged in darkness. The quiet was unsettling, broken only by the occasional creak of failing metal and the distant hum of traffic.

Gerard's chest rose and fell with each steady breath. His body ached from the night's slaughter, his muscles thrumming with the afterglow of adrenaline.

Jian's laughter sliced through the silence. "You really brought the house down, boss. I almost wish I'd recorded it."

Gerard's gaze remained fixed on the destruction. "Drake's alive. He wouldn't stick around to die with his men."

Jian shrugged, his eyes alight with feral delight. "Cowards always run. Makes them so much more fun to chase."

Gerard's fists clenched at his sides. The system had given him Enhanced Combat Awareness and Ruthless Intimidation, but he needed more. To crush his enemies, to silence Horizon's pursuit forever.

The system's voice hummed in his mind like the growl of some ancient beast, but this time it offered no guidance. Only hunger.

[Ding! Mission Progress: Drake's End]

- Processing plant destroyed.

- Enemy forces disrupted but not defeated.

- Drake's location remains unknown.

- Recommendation: Interrogate survivors, gather intelligence, eliminate witnesses.

---

Gerard scanned the wreckage, his eyes narrowing. "We need information. And fast."

Jian stretched, the bloodlust still simmering in his gaze. "Guess it's time to start asking questions. The painful kind."

Gerard nodded. "No survivors."

Jian's grin was savage. "Music to my ears."

22:15 – The Interrogation

They found two men crawling through the rubble, bloodied and desperate. Their uniforms were torn, their weapons discarded in their mad scramble to survive.

Gerard's boot slammed into one man's back, forcing him to the ground. His scream echoed in the darkness.

Jian had already seized the other, a knife pressed firmly against the man's throat. "Now, now. We're just having a little conversation, aren't we?"

Gerard crouched before his captive, his eyes dead and cold. "Where's Drake?"

The man's eyes darted wildly, terror radiating from him in waves. "I... I don't know! He left before the building went down!"

Gerard's voice dropped to a low growl. "Where. Did. He. Go?"

The man's lips trembled, his words spilling out like vomit. "There's... there's a safe house! Up in the mountains. An old hotel they converted. Please, that's all I know!"

Gerard's smile was a knife's edge. "You just saved your life. For now."

The man's relief was short-lived. Gerard's gun rose, the shot echoing like thunder.

Jian laughed as he slit the other man's throat. "I never get tired of the sound of death."

Gerard didn't respond. His eyes were already fixed on the next objective.

The system's message filled Gerard with a dark satisfaction. He could feel his power growing. But the hunger for vengeance was insatiable.

23:00 – Wei Estate – Meiying's Treachery

The opulence of the Wei Estate was suffocating. The halls dripped with wealth, each step echoing against polished marble floors, each breath tainted by the cloying perfume of power.

Meiying paced her room, her fingers trembling slightly as she texted the information Gerard demanded. Her mother had eyes everywhere, but Meiying had learned to be careful. She had to be.

But her hesitation remained. If Gerard was telling the truth about who—or what—he was, then she was playing with something far more dangerous than her mother's wrath.

Her phone vibrated, and the screen flashed with Gerard's response:

"Continue gathering information. Any sign of betrayal, and I will make sure your end is slow and unforgettable."

Meiying's hands tightened around her phone, her knuckles turning white. For a moment, her eyes burned with something almost like hatred. But then she swallowed it down.

She would play the game. At least until she could find a way to win.

[Ding! Mission Progress: Seeds of Betrayal]

- Meiying continues to supply information.

- Her loyalty remains suspect.

- Next Step: Use her intel to strike at Madam Wei's network.

23:30 – Heading to the Mountains – The Hunt Resumes

The night stretched on, its darkness deepening as Gerard and Jian sped along the winding roads leading away from the city. The headlights of their stolen SUV cut through the gloom, illuminating only the twisting path before them.

Jian reclined in the passenger seat, his knife twirling between his fingers. "So, boss. What's the plan when we get there?"

Gerard's hands gripped the steering wheel, his gaze unyielding. "We burn everything to the ground."

Jian's laugh was low, pleased. "Now that's what I like to hear."

The distant lights of the city faded behind them, swallowed by the mountains.

Ahead, the old hotel waited like a beast with iron jaws.

And Gerard was more than willing to walk straight into its mouth.
