Chapter 2 - The Flames of ambition

Chapter 2: The Flames of Ambition

The sun had barely risen over the Azure Cloud Sect, casting a soft golden light over the misty mountains. Liang Chen stood at the edge of the training grounds, his body still humming with the residual energy from the previous night's spar with Mei Ling. Though he had been defeated, the encounter had ignited something within him—a fierce determination to grow stronger.

The system's voice echoed in his mind once more, crisp and commanding.

**"Host has completed the initial task: awakening the Phoenix Flame technique. Reward: 100 system points. New task: reach the 3rd level of the Profound Realm within one month. Reward: Phoenix Feather Armor."**

Liang Chen clenched his fists. The Profound Realm was the foundation of cultivation, and each level required immense effort and resources. He was currently at the 1st level, a mere beginner in the eyes of the sect. But with the system's guidance, he was confident he could achieve the impossible.

### **The Sect's Library**

To grow stronger, Liang Chen knew he needed knowledge. The Azure Cloud Sect's library was a treasure trove of cultivation manuals, ancient texts, and battle techniques. It was a place he had rarely visited in his previous life as a disgraced disciple, but now, it was his first destination.

The library was a grand structure, its shelves lined with scrolls and books that seemed to stretch endlessly. The air was thick with the scent of parchment and ink, and the faint hum of profound energy emanated from the ancient texts.

Liang Chen approached the section on fire-based cultivation techniques. His Phoenix Flame technique was powerful, but he needed to understand its intricacies to maximize its potential. As he browsed the shelves, a soft voice interrupted his thoughts.

"Looking for something specific?"

He turned to see a young woman with short, silvery hair and bright, curious eyes. She wore the robes of a librarian, and her demeanor was friendly yet professional. Her name tag read **"Qing'er."**

"I'm searching for texts on fire-based cultivation," Liang Chen replied, his tone polite but guarded.

Qing'er smiled. "Fire cultivation, huh? That's rare. Most disciples prefer water or wind techniques—easier to control, less destructive." She tilted her head, studying him. "You're Liang Chen, aren't you? The one everyone talks about."

Liang Chen's expression darkened. "If you're here to mock me, save your breath."

Qing'er held up her hands in a placating gesture. "No, no! I'm not like the others. I think it's brave to pursue something unconventional. Here, let me help you."

She led him to a secluded corner of the library, where a dusty scroll lay hidden among the shelves. "This is the *'Flameheart Sutra,'*" she explained, unrolling the scroll. "It's an ancient text on fire cultivation. It's not easy to master, but if you're serious about fire techniques, this is a good place to start."

Liang Chen's eyes widened as he scanned the scroll. The techniques described were advanced, but they complemented the Phoenix Flame technique perfectly. "Thank you," he said, his voice genuine.

Qing'er grinned. "Don't mention it. Just promise me you'll return it in one piece."

### **The First Trial**

With the *Flameheart Sutra* in hand, Liang Chen returned to his secluded training spot. The scroll detailed a method to refine his profound energy into a purer, more potent form. It was a grueling process, requiring intense focus and control, but Liang Chen was determined.

As he practiced, the system's voice chimed in.

**"Host is making progress. Current cultivation level: 1st level of the Profound Realm. Estimated time to reach 3rd level: 27 days."**

Liang Chen gritted his teeth. He didn't have 27 days. The sect's annual tournament was in one month, and he needed to prove himself. He pushed harder, channeling the Phoenix Flame technique until his body glowed with fiery energy.

Hours turned into days, and Liang Chen's progress was steady but slow. His body ached, and his mind was exhausted, but he refused to give up. The system's rewards were within reach, and he would not let this opportunity slip away.

### **A Rival's Challenge**

On the fifth day of his training, Liang Chen was interrupted by a group of disciples led by **Xiao Yan**, a cunning and ambitious cultivator who had always looked down on him. Xiao Yan was at the 3rd level of the Profound Realm, and his arrogance was matched only by his skill.

"Well, well, if it isn't the failure," Xiao Yan sneered, his arms crossed. "What are you doing out here, playing with fire? You'll just burn yourself."

Liang Chen ignored him, continuing his training. But Xiao Yan wasn't one to be ignored. He stepped forward, his expression darkening. "I'm talking to you, trash. Don't think you can rise above your station just because you've learned a few tricks."

Liang Chen finally turned to face him, his eyes blazing with determination. "If you have something to say, say it. Otherwise, get out of my way."

Xiao Yan's smirk faded, replaced by anger. "You dare talk back to me? Fine. Let's see how much you've improved."

Without warning, Xiao Yan lunged at him, his palm glowing with water-based profound energy. Liang Chen reacted instinctively, channeling the Phoenix Flame technique to counter the attack. Their energies collided, creating a burst of steam that obscured the battlefield.

When the steam cleared, both disciples were panting, but neither had gained the upper hand. Xiao Yan's eyes widened in shock. "Impossible… How did you—?"

Liang Chen didn't give him time to finish. With a roar, he unleashed a wave of fiery energy, forcing Xiao Yan and his lackeys to retreat.

### **The Spark Grows**

As Xiao Yan and his group fled, Liang Chen collapsed to his knees, his body trembling with exhaustion. But despite his fatigue, he felt a sense of triumph. He had held his own against a stronger opponent, and his progress was undeniable.

The system's voice echoed in his mind once more.

**"Host has demonstrated exceptional progress. Reward: 50 additional system points. Continue to push your limits."**

Liang Chen smiled faintly. The path ahead was long and fraught with challenges, but he was ready. The flames of ambition burned brightly within him, and he would not rest until he had reclaimed his honor and achieved his vengeance.
