Chapter 38 - 38)The Snake in the Grass

The Training Ground

The next morning broke with a crisp, golden light sweeping over the island. Lucious lost no time. If they were to protect this land, they needed to understand it. He ventured deep into the thick, tangled heart of the jungle, mapping its dense canopy and hidden pathways to figure out exactly how the pirates operated—and, more importantly, how they were systematically stealing the island's precious minerals.

Lucious knew that strategy alone wouldn't save them; they needed muscle. He lined up all one hundred island guards on the clearing. Each man stood tall, gripping a heavy wooden practice sword.

"We start early, and we train hard!" Lucious announced, his voice echoing through the trees.

The training was grueling, but a natural talent quickly emerged. Charlie was a natural, showing a sharper intuition and grasping the sword skills far quicker than the others. While Charlie excelled at leading the drills, Jack and his loyal dog, Hero, kept a watchful eye on the perimeter, patrolling the boundaries to ensure no unwanted guests interrupted them.

By the end of the first week, the progress was undeniable. The guards had completely mastered the basics of the blade. To keep their edge sharp, Lucious instituted weekly combat competitions. The men fought one another in mock battles, learning from their mistakes and sharpening their reflexes.

Within days, the defense routines became pure muscle memory for the guards.

*I just need to watch them for one more week,* Lucious thought to himself, a brief sense of relief washing over him. *Then they'll be ready.*

With the guards functioning like a well-oiled machine, Lucious turned to Charlie. "Let's start laying the traps."

For the next seven days, Lucious and Charlie worked side by side, hauling massive coils of rope deep into the jungle. Together, they constructed a complex web of hidden snares, deadfalls, and tripwires. By the end of week two, everything was perfectly in place. The guards were deployed to their respective stations, and Jack, along with Hero, was back on high alert, monitoring the shadowy depths of the jungle. They were finally good to go.

Or so they thought.

The illusion of safety shattered the very next morning.

Despite the elaborate defenses, a daring midnight raid had occurred. A fresh cache of valuable minerals was missing from the vaults. The pirates had somehow sneaked past the outer perimeter, effortlessly defeated four guards, and vanished into the night with their bounty.

The village mayor was absolutely furious, his face turning a deep crimson as he slammed his fist onto the table. "How can this happen?!" he roared. "We have dozens of traps and a hundred armed guards patrolling the area! This is unacceptable!"

Lucious stood in the center of the room, completely puzzled. His mind raced through the layout of the jungle. *Something is wrong here,* he realized, a cold dread settling in his stomach. *It's mathematically impossible to bypass that many traps by sheer luck.*

The following night, Jack, Lucious, and Hero decided to take matters into their own hands. They formulated a quiet, desperate plan and slipped into the jungle darkness. They needed to show results before they could leave the island for good.

The team split up to cover more ground. Lucious pushed deep into the far side of the jungle, while Jack and Hero took the opposite flank.

The jungle was deathly quiet until Hero suddenly froze. His ears perked up, and a low, menacing growl vibrated in his chest. He sensed something. A split second later, a faint rustle of leaves broke the silence. Hero bolted straight into the brush.

"Hero, wait!" Jack hissed, sprinting hard to keep up with the dog.

Breaking through a thicket, Jack skidded to a halt. In a small clearing stood two burly pirates. Beside them was a third man, his face entirely concealed beneath a heavy cloth hood.

The pirates reacted instantly, pulling their weapons. Jack didn't hesitate. With his left hand, he knocked a pirate's blade aside, while his right hand flew to his holster.

"Die, you fool!" one of the pirates snarled, lunging forward.

*BANG! BANG!*

Jack pulled his gun and fired two precise shots into the pirates' legs. They collapsed to the ground, howling in pain.

Seeing his muscle fall, the hooded man turned and bolted into the thick undergrowth. "Get him, Hero!" Jack yelled.

Hero launched himself through the air, sinking his teeth deep into the fleeing man's leg. The hooded figure screamed in agony, crashing hard against the muddy earth. Jack caught up instantly, pinned the man down, and violently ripped the cloth mask from his face.

Jack gasped, stepping back in absolute shock.

It was Charlie.

"You..." Jack breathed, the pieces instantly falling into place.

Charlie had been helping the pirates all along. He was corrupted. Because he had helped build the defenses, he knew the exact position of every single trap and guard rotation.

Hearing the echo of gunfire, Lucious came tearing through the trees, his weapon drawn. He skidded into the clearing and stopped dead in his tracks, staring at the unbelieving sight before him. Charlie was pinned to the dirt, exposed as a traitor.

Without a word, Jack and Lucious dragged a bound and weeping Charlie back to the village station, dumping him unceremoniously at the mayor's feet.

The mayor stood over the traitor, his expression a mix of profound disappointment and cold fury. He looked up at Jack and Lucious. "So, there was a snake among us. A traitor in our own village. That is why we were never able to capture the pirates in the first place."

The mayor stepped forward and shook Lucious's hand warmly. "Thank you. You have saved this island."

Finally, after catching the man who had compromised them, Lucious looked out over the horizon where the sun was just beginning to peek over the ocean.

"Our work here is done," Lucious said quietly. "We are leaving tomorrow. The guards' training is complete, and they know how to fight. Just ensure they make more traps around the jungle—and this time, choose the mapmaker wisely."
