Chapter 16 - Silence After the Blow

Sung-Min stayed seated on the couch in his apartment until the bottle of soju he'd pulled from the fridge was empty. He didn't turn on the lights. The phone screen lit up his face every time it vibrated. He didn't touch it.

First came the message from Ji-Yeon. "He left again. He didn't touch me. Just looked at me like I was a stranger and walked out. I don't know where he is."

Then another, ten minutes later. "I'm not crying for him. I'm crying because I don't know who I am anymore."

Sung-Min read both. He didn't reply to either.

The next one was from the system, cold and punctual as always. [Status update: Park Ji-Yeon – Loyalty toward Kang Tae-Ho: 8%. Emotional dependency toward you: 74%. Risk of psychological collapse: high.][No reward for this phase. Observation only.]

He flipped the phone face-down on the table. Stood up. Walked to the window. Opened the blinds a crack with two fingers.

The street was empty. A stray dog sniffed a torn bag next to the dumpster. Neon lights flickered on the building across the way: a cheap karaoke bar that never closed.

Sung-Min stayed there until his eyes ached from staring at the same streetlamp.

When he returned to the couch, the phone showed three missed calls from Soo-Jin and a voice message. He played it with the volume low.

Her voice came out choppy, like she was walking fast down the street. "Sung-Min… Min-Soo came looking for me after my shift. He was drunk. Yelled at me in the middle of the street. Said if I didn't end things with 'that bastard' he'd upload photos of me somewhere. Photos that don't even exist, but… fuck, it scared me. Really scared me. I don't know what to do. Call me. Please."

The message ended with a short sob she tried to cut off before hanging up.

Sung-Min closed his eyes. He didn't call.

Instead he opened the chat with Eun-Ha. The last message was from him, after Jade Leaf: "Thanks for the tea. You owe me a less murderous class on Tuesday."

She'd replied with a laughing emoji and a simple: "Deal. Rest up."

Nothing else.

Sung-Min typed. "Still awake?"

The reply took four minutes. "Yeah. Couldn't sleep. You?"

"Same."

Three dots dancing. Stopping. Starting again. "Want to talk?"

He stared at the screen for a long time. "Not over chat. Can you come out early tomorrow? There's a park near Hongdae. The small one with the duck pond. 8:30."

The answer came almost instantly. "I'll be there."

Sung-Min turned off the phone. Stood up. Pulled off his T-shirt. Dropped it on the floor. Walked into the bathroom. Turned on the cold tap. Stepped under the stream without taking off his pants.

The icy water hit the back of his neck, his back, his chest. He didn't move. Let it hurt.

When he stepped out, dripping, he looked at himself in the fogged mirror. Wiped a circle clear with his hand.

And for the first time in a long while, he didn't like what he saw.

Not because it was ugly.

But because it looked… empty.

He dried off with an old towel. Put on clean clothes. Got into bed.

He didn't sleep. Just stared at the ceiling until the sky began to lighten through the gaps in the blinds.

When the alarm went off at 7:15, he got up like he hadn't slept in days. Put on a gray hoodie and jeans.

Before leaving, he grabbed the phone. There was a new message from Ji-Yeon. Just three words. "Don't come anymore."

Sung-Min read it. Deleted it. Opened the apartment door. Went down the stairs.

The morning air was fresh and smelled of bread from the corner bakery.

He walked toward Hongdae with his hands in his pockets. Didn't look back.

The park was almost deserted at that hour. Just an old man walking a tiny dog and a woman jogging with earbuds.

Eun-Ha was already there. Sitting on a bench by the pond. She wore a light blue scarf wrapped around her neck and a long camel-colored coat.

When she saw him, she raised her hand in a small wave.

Sung-Min sat beside her. Not too close. Not too far.

Neither spoke for a full minute. Only the soft ripple of water and the distant bark of the little dog.

Finally Eun-Ha broke the silence.

"You didn't sleep, did you?"

He shook his head.

"You neither."

She smiled sadly.

"Last night Joon-Hyuk called. He's arriving earlier. He's at the airport now. Asked if I'd wait up for him. I said yes."

Silence again.

"Are you going to?" Sung-Min asked.

Eun-Ha looked at the pond. The ducks floated in slow circles.

"I don't know."

Sung-Min leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

"Want me to tell you what to do?"

She turned her face toward him.

"Would you?"

"No," he said. "Because I'm not the one living with him. Or sleeping next to him every night."

Eun-Ha dropped her gaze. Her fingers toyed with the edge of her scarf.

"What if I told you I don't want to keep living like this anymore?"

Sung-Min glanced at her sideways.

"Then don't."

She let out a long sigh.

"It's easy to say."

"It's not easy," he said. "But it's easier than pretending you're okay."

Eun-Ha stayed quiet. A duck waddled to the edge of the pond, pecking at something invisible.

Finally she spoke, almost a whisper.

"And you? What are you going to do with everything you're breaking?"

Sung-Min didn't answer right away. When he did, his voice came out low.

"I don't know."

Eun-Ha looked at him steadily.

"Don't know, or don't want to know?"

He shrugged. A small, tired gesture.

"Both."

She stood up slowly. Adjusted her scarf.

"I have to go. He lands in an hour."

Sung-Min stood too. They walked together to the park exit.

At the gate, Eun-Ha stopped. Turned to him.

"Tuesday at four," she said. "I'm still teaching. If you want to come… come."

Sung-Min nodded.

"I'll be there."

She looked at him one second longer. Then rose on her toes and kissed his cheek.

It wasn't romantic. It was… grateful.

"Take care, Sung-Min."

"You too."

Eun-Ha walked away quickly, without looking back.

Sung-Min stayed there. The sun was higher now. The park was starting to fill: runners, mothers with strollers, students with earbuds.

He pulled out his phone. Opened the chat with Soo-Jin. Typed.

"I'm okay. How are you?"

The reply came in under a minute. "Scared. But alive. Thanks for asking."

Sung-Min pocketed the phone. Looked up at the sky. Took a deep breath.

And started walking back home.

He didn't know what would happen in the next few hours. Didn't know if Tae-Ho would come after him. Didn't know if Min-Soo would follow through on his threats. Didn't know if Ji-Yeon would ever forgive him. Didn't know if Eun-Ha would leave Joon-Hyuk.

He only knew one thing.

The game wasn't fun anymore.

And for the first time, he felt the real weight of every card he'd moved.

The castle hadn't collapsed yet.

But it was no longer a castle.

It was a ruin shaped like one.

And he was still inside.
