Chapter 285 - Chapter 285

Mira seemed to be at least a little bit cautious in Ghoul Town as they passed through the gates. She was looking around suspiciously, perhaps thinking she might be mugged. Perhaps the brotherhood was not good with ghouls? Or perhaps she had a bad experience with them? Or perhaps still it was just a misunderstanding. Still while she followed she took in the sights as Adam led her to the private terminal.

"Adam!" Hobson said with a toothy smile as he walked over.

"Hobson, good to see you." He smiled.

"I heard what happened on the radio, but to think that Vaulty would help save Chicago! Who would have guessed?" He chuckled.

"Well it wasn't just-" Adam began before getting waved off by Hobson.

"Yeah yeah, I know your type. Just accept the compliment and shut up." He laughed, Adam laughed too.

"Alright, then thank you."

"There you go. Now, you got some goods for me, I assume?"

"You bet. I may have done things in a reverse order to what I normally do but I brought you everything left over. I set this stuff aside for you knowing what you usually pick." He smiled as he placed the last two bags on the counter for him.

"Anticipating my needs and everything, huh? Well, I gotta say, meeting you was certainly a stroke of luck. Seems that old salt Salvatore was good for something, eh?" He laughed. "Anyway, let me take a look at what you got for me." He said as he began to rifle through. Adam had selected a smattering of things, from guns to daily necessities that they needed a fresh infusion of in Ghoul Town. It seemed he did well because Hobson looked quite pleased.

"I think I'll take the lot." He smiled after a moment. "How does 721 caps sound?" He asked.

"That sounds good, but…" Adam paused to consider. "Do you happen to have any fusion cores? If you do, I'd like to buy one." Hobson looked at him incredulously.

"What, you think I just have something so valuable just sitting around?" He said with a raised eyebrow before he looked left and right and then leaned in, beginning to whisper. "I do actually have one, a client ordered it but never came to pick it up. I don't want to get stuck with it, so if you take it from me for 250 caps, it's all yours." Adam nodded slowly and Hobson leaned back with a smile.

"Alright then, everything comes to 471 caps, altogether." He said before reaching down to grab the money to hand over to Adam, and then, a moment later, the fusion core too.

"Oh, by the way…" Adam began as he started to put the fusion core into his bag. "There is a settlement of ghouls starting a new community, and they are probably looking for a fusion core too, if you have heard anything you-" Adam began before Hobson cut him off.

"Yeah I know, Well, at least some parts of it. Some fools wanted to start their own thing outside the walls of Midway, good luck to them I say. But anyway I had been sitting on two of those bad boys for a while, the client who never came that I mentioned, and was more than happy to sell one to them. Tried to sell them the other too but they weren't interested. So good thing you came along."

Adam was happy to hear this. It sounded like the ghouls at the FRS were able to get their feet off the ground and even managed to put together the caps to get the fusion core needed to power their new home. He wanted to visit them at some point, see how they were doing, but it was only recently they moved in, he would give them some time. Just this news alone was great to hear.

"Alright, thank you Hobson."

"No, thank you." He smiled. "Always nice to see a friendly smoothskin." He then gestured with his head to Mira. "New friend?" He asked as Adam got ready to leave.

"Uh, yeah." Adam said, not exactly sure how much to tell beyond that.

"Well she's a looker. You know back in my day all the ladies used to fawn over me." He said with a slightly sleazy grin, though it was spoken at Adam not Mira so there was no ill intent intended.

"Thats what all guys say when they are past their prime." Adam smirked. Hobson put on mock offense.

"You wound me smoothskin. Just wait, once your skin starts falling off you too will go around saying you were a looker only to have some young brat call you a liar." Adam chuckled and shook his head.

"Have a good day Hobson."

"You too, Adam, always a pleasure."

With that last transaction done Adam had finally sold the last of the things he needed to get rid of. He still had one more purchase to make though. As he realized, he was basically the breadwinner for the Vault; he needed to ensure the people of the Vault had enough food to live on. Maybe he was taking the role too seriously but he couldn't simply let the people he let move in starve so he was planning to go buy a huge amount of food to bring back with him to the Vault.

However, as he left Ghoul Town and started to head to Midway, he saw a number of men loading in whole pallets of bags of food. Which confused him deeply because he had not even spoken with the food distribution manager yet.

"Um, excuse me, do you mind explaining what is going on?" Adam asked confused as he walked over.

"All this food has been bought up and we were told to load it into the car out front."

"But I haven't ordered any food yet?" Adam said back, confused.

"I did." Deccanus said as he came around from the other side of the APC and walked towards Adam.

"Deccanus? You bought food? Why?"

"Because our tribe is in need of food and I have the means to supply it. I am learning from your example, to show generosity when I can. I have no need for the wealth I have gained, it is better put use to feeding those of our tribe." He said resolutely.

"But you don't have that responsibility, I was gonna-"

"No, I am the hunter, I am the one who ensures our tribe is fed. This is my duty. Do not take this responsibility away from me. So long as I am here, this job is mine. Besides, these caps I have earned, they are mine to spend how I wish. If I wish to feed our tribe is that not my decision to make?" Adam scratched his head while he thought this through. Deccanus had pulled a fast one on him, using the time they were separated to make a deal and purchase a large amount of food before he could. Was him splitting off from Adam when he went to see Lune just an excuse when this was his plan all along? He was not sure now. But what's done is done. It did save Adam a tremendous amount of money and he was not going to argue against Deccanus' generosity, but he did feel sheepish about it. Especially since he had hyped himself up to make this happen.

"I uh… don't know what to say, Deccanus." Adam said softly.

"Just say, thank you." He smiled a bit. Adam let off a small chuckle.

"Thank you, Deccanus."
