Chapter 288 - Chapter 288

After the three of them were done eating Adam took Mira to The Oasis to see Eve. He did invite Deccanus too but Deccanus was not a fan of clubs so he decided to do his own thing.

"Well, well, well, it's my favorite little soldier~" Eve said as soon as she spotted Adam walk through the door.

"Hi Eve." Adam said with a smile as he sat down at the bar, Mira followed suit, sitting down a moment later.

"Never thought I'd see a Brotherhood member sitting at a bar." Eve said to Mira.

"We drink too, you know. In fact, back when I was an initiate, I used to drink the rest of my unit under the table." Eve paused.

"Aren't initiates pretty young?"

"As they say, rules are meant to be broken." Mira smirked and Eve let off a low chuckle.

"What can I get you two?"

"Red wine for me, please." Adam said.

"I'll take a sparkling wine if you have it."

"Sure we do, though usually we save them for celebrations. You got anything worth celebrating?" She asked as she pulled a bottle of red wine off the counter and poured Adam a glass.

"If you give me the opportunity to toast, I may offer one up."

"Well you know how to keep a girl on edge, honey. Just one sec~" Eve said before she placed the glass in front of Adam and then poured a glass for Mira, placing it in front of her. As soon as Mira had the glass she raised it with a soft smile.

"To new friends, a new home, and new family." She then took a sip of her drink. Adam did the same, finding it a worthy reason to toast.

"Well I'd drink to that. Proverbably, I mean. I'm on the job at the moment~" Eve teased lightly. Not like she could drink anyway.

"Well I did drink to that. That's a wonderful reason to celebrate." Adam smiled.

"See?" Mira let off a soft chuckle, relaxing on her barstool a bit.

"So, because you two are in town I guess you are here to pick me up?" Eve asked while she dried off some glasses.

"Only if you are ready to come back with us." Adam said between sips of his wine. "I see you still got your job."

"Well I got my stuff together, for everything else, well I got some time off, I'll decide from there. I have an eternity to live all the lives I want to live, after all~" Adam chuckled.

"You know some might be jealous of that."

"You want to know the real issue with being me?" She asked as she leaned in. "Boredom." She said with a honeyed tone. "Living for 200 years wears on any girls soul, even if she was designed to be the perfect machine~"

"I'm not sure I would want to live forever." Mira mused. "I think we all have a finite time on this earth and pushing it too far might have unforeseen consequences."

"Well I don't know about that, honey~ But I do know that I'm not planning to go anywhere anytime soon." Eve said back to Mira.

"Well anyway we are heading back in a few days. I got some stuff that won't be ready for a bit and then I have to have a… meeting…" Adam said, slowly. Unsure what he should say on it. If he was in a more private space he would tell Eve everything but if he was worried about spies working for the Cult would hear about his plans through The Guild, then a random crowd in The Oasis was even worse.

Eve, predictably, tilted her head in confusion and interest but read the subtext of the situation enough to not ask further.

"Well you just come find me when you are ready to head out. As long as you have space in that little APC of yours I will load it up with all of my Gear before we go. That way I can just hop in and enjoy the ride." She then leaned in. "Whichever ride you are willing to give me~" She teased with a seductive tone. Adam laughed.

The rest of the evening went without any trouble, Adam went back to his room in The Layover and showered before getting a nice long sleep in.

The next day came and Adam debated what to do. He had considered going out and scavenging to kill some time but decided against doing anything crazy before he went out to try to meet War. The last thing he needed was one of his friends to be injured, or god forbid, himself, before going into possibly hostile territory. If he could find a nice safe place to scavenge he would be fine with that but he had a bad luck magnet when it came to encountering enemies on his runs. No, for now it was smarter to just let the day ride.

After breakfast he made a plan with Deccanus to see a movie later, his treat, which he insisted on, and was going to then meet up with Mira to go to the Batting cage. However, until afternoon he was free.

"Are you Adam Baxter?" A deep voice said from behind him as he walked along the second floor, having split up from his friends.

"Yes?' Adam said, turning around to look at the man who spoke. He was rather tall, probably 6 foot 6, and had dark brown skin and a shaved head. He was also wearing military fatigues and combat boots but other than that he looked pretty normal.

Adam was not sure what he wanted, but truthfully Adam had already been stopped a few times within the past day and a half by random passerbies who wanted to shake his hand or get his autograph. He was apparently building up a fan club? He was uncertain. But it was fair to assume this man was one of those people.

However before he could size him up he felt a tap on his shoulder and then turned around to see a short older woman, short gray hair, wrinkles, and bright blue eyes also wearing military fatigues. On her back was an anti material rifle that was almost bigger than she was and she looked at Adam with a cold expression. Adam was confused what this was all about before he felt something really really heavy hit him in the back of the head.

His vision went dark shortly after.
