If one suffocated to death, there was always another; what Naruto didn't lack was clones.
Night fell.
Clones dug underground.
On the surface, the examinees, who had run for three days from Konoha to the Demon Desert, were fighting in the restaurant. The second part of the exam was to start the next day, so the Sand Village had prepared a rest area and a restaurant for the early arrivals.
Upon hearing there was food, Choji, who had been hungry for three days, joyfully rushed into the restaurant, ready for a feast.
Then, the Shinobi World witnessed the first successful instance of someone preventing an Akimichi from putting food into their mouth.
It was a fatty, even fatter than Choji. Not only was he fat, but he was also greasy, constantly sweating. To monopolize the food, he evenly splashed his sweat all over the food in the restaurant.
It was so dirty that everyone lost their appetite. Choji, whose vision was blurry from hunger, exploded on the spot, clenching his fists, ready to teach the other party how to be a fat person who cherishes food.
The atmosphere of every Chunin Exam was as tense as a powder keg, and Choji lit the fuse. A chaotic battle began, with genin from several villages mixing into one big brawl. Eventually, the Sand Shinobi examiners had to step in to control the situation.
All the food had been overturned and was inedible. Choji's mind spun, and he thought of the Konoha squad leaders; they surely had food. Choji, starving to death, burst out the door.
The Sand Shinobi didn't stop him, saying to the crowd, "Many dangerous creatures lurk beneath this desert. They hide by day and forage by night. Whoever is his teammate had best call him back, or we won't be responsible if something happens."
On the exam venue rooftop, the Konoha squad leaders, Kurenai Yuhi, Asuma Sarutobi, and Might Guy, received a slip of paper delivered by a Konoha ninja hawk.
Asuma released the ninja hawk and said, "Lady Tsunade says, according to intelligence, there will be people opposing Gaara's ascension who will target him during this exam."
"Then what's our mission?" Kurenai asked.
"Lady Tsunade said to try our best to protect Gaara. A stable ally is beneficial for Konoha's development."
"Understood," Guy replied. Then he cocked an ear, "It sounds like something's happening over there."
"Let's go check it out."
"Mm."
From beginning to end, the three's positions were always Kurenai, Guy, Asuma. Just like the previous Chunin Exam, Guy, the single dog, was once again stuck between the young couple, though this time Kakashi was absent.
A Chunin Exam involved Gaara's faction, his opposing faction, and Konoha's faction dispatched by Tsunade, and they all more or less had some idea about each other. However, they'd be damned if they ever guessed there was a fourth faction hidden underground.
The next day, Choji was still drooling as he listened to the exam rules. Last night, he had received a bag of bread from Guy, but bread wasn't filling enough.
He hadn't eaten breakfast this morning, and he was hungry again. Although Guy's behavior was sometimes unbearable, he was the best mentor to his juniors. Seeing Choji cry from hunger, he secretly slipped him a bag of bread.
After hearing the exam rules, Ino complained, "Can't you show a little ambition?"
"I dreamed of Naruto last night."
Ino rolled her eyes, "You dreamed of barbecue, didn't you!"
"Grrr~~"
Hearing "barbecue," Choji's stomach growled even louder.
And the big eater, Choji was so eager for, was currently fully geared up and raring to go. With the cylindrical container teleportation method for air delivery, the plan proceeded smoothly. The clones had already begun digging diagonally towards the surface.
Unfortunately, a plan is ultimately just a plan. In its implementation, even a slight deviation can send events spiraling in an unimaginable direction. Take Lord Madara, for example: he made so many plans for the peace of the Shinobi World, but what was the result? He was stabbed by Black Zetsu in plain sight and turned into a woman.
However, Naruto was different from Madara. Madara's plan went wrong at the very end, while Naruto's went off-course right from the start.
The first to encounter trouble was Mine Tunnel #1. This tunnel was led by Naruko today, with Iron Pillar leading #2, and Moye leading #3.
"It sounds like there's movement," a clone said, pressing against the dirt to listen.
"Movement means we've arrived," Naruko said, forcefully pushing her hands into the soil. The soil layer was very thin; after her fingers passed through, she could feel that the other side was empty. Naruko's heart swelled with joy. "First place is ours."
The three groups of clones had made similar progress and were all competing to reach the surface first. Pushing aside the soil layer, she jumped out of the pit. "Finally... where the heck is this?!"
The moment she jumped out of the pit, Naruko felt she had dug into the wrong place. It was very dark, but there was an echo, indicating it wasn't the surface, but a sealed space. The space wasn't small,
and she could faintly hear something moving and rubbing against the ground. Rubbing out a Rasengan and infusing it with chakra, holding it like a multicolored flashlight, Naruko swallowed.
The Rasengan was very bright, and its light was soft, illuminating the chamber, which was over ten meters high. Under the light, white eggs, each the size of a human head, were neatly arranged. Giant black ants, as tall as humans, were queueing, carrying the eggs in and out of the chamber entrance.
Naruko froze on the spot.
Did I just dig into a Zerg base?!
The ants also discovered the intruder. After waving their antennae to exchange information, they all put down their eggs and launched an attack on Naruko.
"Don't attack, I'm..." Naruko, having snapped back to reality, was engulfed by the ants before she could even finish her sentence.
