Chapter 40 - Where Love Hurts More Than Silence

Silas stood with his back to her, shoulders rigid, the air around him carrying a quiet tension that made Ayla feel smaller than she already was. She did not dare to move. The sofa beneath her felt too large, too exposed. Her knees were pulled tight to her chest, arms wrapped around them like fragile armor, her forehead resting lightly against her knees as silent tears continued to slip down her cheeks. The apartment felt suffocating, every second stretching painfully long.

She heard his footsteps.

Measured. Calm. Controlled.

The sound of a drawer opening somewhere in the apartment echoed sharply in her ears. Her chest tightened. Even breathing felt like a mistake. She did not lift her head, did not look. Fear sat heavy in her stomach, twisting into something that made her feel nauseous. When he returned, she sensed him before she saw him. The air shifted. The cushion dipped beside her.

Silas sat down.

Her body stiffened instinctively.
