Chapter 21 - Awkwardly Funny

After a long moment of quiet — the wind moving slowly through the camp and carrying distant sounds of Pokémon finishing their work at the forest edge — a single sharp sound broke the stillness.

Click.

The noise startled both Satoshi and Bonnie slightly. Their heads lifted at the exact same time, turning toward the source.

Bonnie's eyes went wide first; Satoshi blinked once, then narrowed his eyes as he spotted the culprit.

Viola stood a short distance away—maybe five or six steps from their chairs—holding her camera up to her face.

The lens pointed straight at them. She braced the camera steady with both hands. Her right eye pressed close to the viewfinder, and her left eye was squeezed shut for perfect focus.

The camera strap hung loose around her neck, she kept the shutter button half-pressed for a second longer, then lowered the camera slowly, a wide grin already spreading across her face.

"Now that's a fantastic shot at the perfect moment!" she said in her usual bright, cheerful tone, the words bubbling out like she had just captured the winning photo of the year.

She lowered the camera the rest of the way, letting the strap catch its weight around her neck again, then gave the small preview screen a quick glance before nodding to herself.

"The lantern light, the way the wind moved your hair, that little pat on the head — pure gold. Emotional, tender, adventurous."

She stepped one pace closer, boots crunching lightly on the damp grass that had started growing back under the Grass-types' efforts.

"You really give off a sensei vibe," Viola said, tilting her head as she studied Satoshi up and down. She tapped one finger against her chin like she was genuinely trying to decide the right word.

"Or maybe uncle? Or big brother? No idea! But whatever it is, it works. The photo's going to turn out amazing! Can I keep it?"

"Oh — ha ha — sure," Satoshi replied flatly.

He gave her a deadpan look—eyebrows level, mouth set in a straight line that showed zero amusement.

A cartoonish light bulb popped into his head, glowing yellow for a split second. He reached up, grabbed the imaginary bulb, and flung it sideways.

It sailed through the night and crashed somewhere behind a nearby equipment crate with a loud, exaggerated shatter of glass and sparks that only existed in his head.

Satoshi's expression changed in an instant—from flat boredom to something devious and playful. A small, mischievous grin tugged at the corners of his mouth.

He turned toward Bonnie without warning.

Bonnie was still sitting with her legs dangling off the edge of the chair now, feet swinging slowly back and forth. She looked up at him, confused by the sudden shift in his mood.

Before Bonnie could figure out what was happening, Satoshi leaned over fast.

Both his hands shot forward and grabbed her cheeks, fingers pressing gently but firmly into the soft skin on either side of her face. He pinched just enough to squish her cheeks inward, making her lips pucker out like a fish.

Bonnie's eyes went wide in instant surprise, a muffled "Mmph?!" escaping her as her whole face turned bright red under the lantern light.

"Viola, quick!" Satoshi called out, voice suddenly full of fake urgency while he kept Bonnie's cheeks held in place.

"Snap a picture of her! This is her punishment for not staying put as I told her!"

Bonnie let out a muffled squeak, cheeks squished between his fingers so her words came out garbled and high-pitched.

"Sahoshi—stoh it! Th— that hur—!"

She tried to pull her head back, but Satoshi held on just enough to keep her from escaping completely, turning her face left and right a little like he was showing off a prize. Her small hands came up and grabbed at his wrists, tugging weakly while her legs kicked back and forth in the air under the chair.

Viola burst out laughing, already lifting her camera back up in one smooth motion. "Oh, this is too good—hold that pose! Punishment portrait incoming!"

She pressed the viewfinder to her eye again, left eye closing for focus, and her finger hovered over the shutter.

"Say 'I promise to listen next time'!"

Click. Click. Click.

The camera fired off three quick shots in a row, capturing Bonnie's flushed, squished face from slightly different angles while Satoshi kept his hands right where they were, a wider grin finally breaking through his earlier flat expression.

Bonnie kept wriggling, trying to pull away, but Satoshi held on just long enough for the photos before finally letting go.

Her cheeks popped back into place with a soft bounce, and she immediately rubbed at them with both hands, glaring up at him through watery, embarrassed eyes.

"That wasn't fair!" she protested, voice still a little muffled from the lingering sting. "You're supposed to be mad, not mean!"

Satoshi leaned back into his chair with his arms crossed, looking far too pleased with himself. "Punishment complete."

"Next time, listen when I say stay put." he said simply, the grin still lingering even as he tried to make his tone serious.

Viola lowered the camera again, scrolling quickly through the shots on the screen with her thumb. "These are keepers!" she said, nodding to herself.

Then she winked at Bonnie. "Don't worry, kiddo. You still look adorable. Embarrassment is just part of the adventure package."

Viola finished scrolling through the photos on her camera screen, gave one last satisfied nod to herself, then tucked the camera back against her chest with the strap secure around her neck.

She patted the side of it once like it was an old friend, then looked up at Satoshi and Bonnie with that same bright energy still lighting up her face.

"Oh yeah, I just remembered." she said suddenly, snapping her fingers as if the thought had popped into her head right that second.

She reached into the right pocket of her shorts with her left hand, fingers dipping in smoothly. When she pulled her hand back out, she held two pokéballs—both in their minimized state.

"Here," Viola said, holding them out toward Satoshi with an open palm.

"I was actually supposed to come and return your fully healed Pokémon. Nurse Joy finished up with them a little while ago—both Froakie and Zigzagoon are back to full health, no burns, no exhaustion left. They're good to go."

Satoshi blinked once, then nodded quickly.

"Oh, thanks," he said, his voice carrying real gratitude this time.

He leaned forward in his chair and reached out with his right hand, fingers closing carefully around the two Poké Balls. He gave them a quick glance—confirming they were indeed his—then slipped them one after the other into the front pocket of his hoodie.

The fabric bulged slightly with the weight, but he patted the pocket flat once to make sure they sat securely.

Viola gave a small wave of her hand, brushing off the thanks like it was nothing. "No problem at all. Happy to help after everything tonight."

She took one step back, then paused, turning her body slightly so she faced Satoshi more directly. A playful glint appeared in her eyes, and the corner of her mouth curved up into a knowing smile.

"Anyway, cya," she said. "I gotta get back to my gym before it gets too late. And…"

She leaned forward just a little, lowering her voice like she was sharing a secret, then winked with her right eye.

"I will be waiting for you…"

The wink was slow and deliberate, the hint hanging in the air clear enough to make Satoshi's eyebrows lift in mild confusion. Before he could ask what she meant—or even form a response—Viola straightened up again.

She reached to her belt with her right hand, unclipped another pokéball that had been hanging there, and pressed the center button. The ball expanded to full size in her grip with a soft click. She tossed it upward in a gentle arc.

"Vivillon, come on out!"

A red flash erupted from the opened ball. Vivillon materialized above them, wings already spread wide, the colorful patterns on them shifting faintly in the lantern light.

The butterfly Pokémon hovered steadily, wings beating in slow, powerful strokes that sent small gusts of air downward, rustling Bonnie's pajamas hood and pushing a few loose strands of Satoshi's hair back under his visor.

Viola stepped directly underneath her Pokémon, raising both arms out to her sides in a perfect T-pose—elbows straight, palms facing down, fingers extended. She looked completely serious for half a second, like she was about to give some important command.

Then Vivillon's eyes glowed with that same soft pink-purple light from earlier. Psychic energy wrapped around Viola's body in a gentle shimmer.

Her feet lifted off the ground smoothly, no jerk or wobble—just a steady rise as the telekinetic field held her level and secure.

She floated upward until her boots were even with Vivillon's underbelly, arms still locked out in that ridiculous T-shape, body perfectly straight like a board.

Vivillon tilted forward slightly, and the two of them moved off together—Viola flying through the night sky in full T-pose under the butterfly Pokémon, Psychic keeping her suspended and stable the whole way.

She didn't wave goodbye, didn't look back, just kept that pose as they rose higher above the camp, cleared the treetops, and disappeared into the dark distance toward Santalune City.

Satoshi sat there staring after them, mouth slightly open, eyes blinking slowly.

"Eh...? ? ?"

Completely baffled by the sight of a gym leader flying away in the most absurd, hilarious pose he had ever seen. Bonnie stared up too, mouth open in a small O of surprise, before she finally let out a tiny giggle that broke the silence.

Bonnie's tiny giggle faded away slowly, the sound getting softer and shorter with each breath until it stopped completely. Her small body relaxed fully against Satoshi's side, head tipping forward until her cheek pressed flat against the fabric of his hoodie on his right shoulder.

Her messy hair spilled over the crooked Tyrantrum hood spikes, brushing against his arm in soft strands. Her hands, which had been loosely clutching the edges of her pajamas during the laughter, loosened one finger at a time until they fell limp into her lap.

Her breathing evened out into long, quiet inhales and exhales—the steady rhythm of someone who had finally given in to exhaustion after the long, frightening night.

Satoshi felt the extra weight settle against him.

He glanced down at her without moving his head too much, careful not to shift and wake her.

Bonnie's face looked peaceful now—no more wide eyes from fear, no more flushed cheeks from embarrassment.

Just calm, closed eyelids and slightly parted lips as she slept soundly. A small, calm smile curved across Satoshi's mouth. The corners of his eyes softened behind the visor. He let out a slow, quiet yawn—mouth opening wide, then closing again as his shoulders dropped a little lower in the folding chair.

One of the nearby firefighters—a tall man in a yellow turnout coat with reflective stripes—walked past carrying a coiled hose over his shoulder. He paused when he saw the two of them, gave a small nod of recognition, and spoke in a low, tired-but-kind voice.

"You two holding up okay? Crew's almost done wrapping up. Should be able to get you back to a proper bed soon if you want."

Satoshi lifted his head just enough to meet the man's eyes. He kept his voice quiet so he wouldn't wake Bonnie.

"Yeah, we're good. Thanks for everything tonight."

The firefighter gave a short thumbs-up with his free hand. "No prob. You kids did good staying calm out there. Get some rest."

He continued walking toward the equipment pile, boots crunching softly on the regrown grass patches.

A second firefighter—a woman with short dark hair tied back under her helmet—passed by a moment later, leading a tired-looking Blastoise by its side.

The cannons on its back still dripped the last bits of water onto the ground. She glanced over at Satoshi and Bonnie, then spoke to her partner in a hushed tone.

"Poor things. Look at them—kid's out cold on his shoulder. Let's keep it down over here so they can sleep a bit."

The man nodded. "Yeah. I'll help move the last crates quieter."

They lowered their voices after that, movements slowing as they finished stowing gear.

The camp grew even quieter—only the faint rustle of new leaves in the breeze, the occasional soft pop of cooling embers far off in the forest edge, and the low murmur of a few remaining Pokémon being recalled into their balls.

Another voice drifted over from the medical tent a short distance away—two Nurse Joys murmuring to each other as they quickly packed supplies to treat the wild Pokémon still recovering from the fire.

"…that little Froakie really pushed himself past his limits," one said, folding a clean towel.

"It's mostly exhaustion and minor strain. With proper rest, he'll recover just fine."

Nurse Joy nodded, closing the first-aid kit with a soft click. "Yeah… and he was lucky the ice held the tree just in time, according to Miss Viola. The girl might've been in real danger. Such a brave little guy, throwing himself in like that."

Their words faded as they moved deeper into the tent, replaced by the quiet clink of metal trays being stacked.

Satoshi leaned his own head back slightly against the canvas wall of the tent behind them, eyes half-lidded as he stared up at the night sky.

The stars showed clearly now that the smoke had cleared away completely—small, sharp points of light scattered across the dark. The lantern nearby cast a warm yellow circle around their chairs, but beyond that the camp had gone quiet.

Most of the Water- and Grass-type Pokémon had been recalled or were resting in their balls. Only a few soft sounds remained—the distant rustle of leaves in the restored forest edge, the faint creak of tent poles settling in the breeze.

He let out another small yawn, quieter this time.

Shifting his right arm just enough to drape loosely around Bonnie's shoulders—nothing tight, just enough to keep her steady against him so she wouldn't slip sideways in her sleep.

Then his head tilted slowly to the side until it rested gently against the top of hers. His breathing slowed to match hers, long and even. His eyes closed the rest of the way, and sleep took him too.

In the night sky above them, the stars stayed steady, watching over the quiet camp...

Behind one of the nearby tents — the one with the stacked medical supplies — a tiny figure peeked from the side.

Its body pressed to the canvas, barely letting the lantern's glow catch it. It watched the two sleeping figures, shifting only enough to keep an eye on them, silent and careful.

Thank you for your patience! I wasn't able to release the chapter last week, not because of the usual "author got sick" excuse like many others, but because my older brother came down with an extreme fever. My family and I had to take him to the hospital, and I had to watch over him alone since my parents were busy with work I can't blame them for that. Good news: he's cured!

I'M BACK, BABY! After a three-day rest, I've finally returned to writing and even finished three chapters unfortunately! Apologies for the long wait, and thank you again for sticking around!
