Chapter 539: Cellmate +1

"…"

Lin Yuxia could only feel speechless at his reply.

"Oh right, where do I pay? Or since I just acted bravely and saved everyone, shouldn't the organizers let a professional like me keep this dangerous thing for safekeeping?"

Steven casually stuffed the chess set into his inventory. After confirming it couldn't cause trouble inside, he glanced at the museum staff lying unconscious on the ground. If everyone was down, did that mean he didn't have to pay anymore?

They always said human life was priceless. He had saved so many people—offsetting the cost of the auction items didn't seem unreasonable, right?

"I don't mind. As long as your conscience is clear. But are you really keeping that chess set? It obviously has issues."

From what they had just seen, the chess set could create illusions. Even if it couldn't threaten him, it could still harm innocent people. If possible, she would prefer handing it over to her or the Guard Department.

"Well… there's something interesting hidden inside. It's fine if I keep it, but if you take it, who knows what might happen."

Steven narrowed his eyes. When he bit one of the chess pieces earlier, he had already noticed something hidden within. The indescribable presence slipped into his consciousness the moment it touched him—only to be blocked by the chaotic layer of mental "junk data" surrounding his mind.

Whether it was a consciousness or a memory fragment, it was quickly captured. After all, he was long accustomed to psychic intrusions.

Soon, he extracted scattered scenes from the memory. In them, a young man resembling the earlier phantom stood in traditional Han clothing, staring directly at him—as if looking into a mirror, gazing straight into Steven's consciousness.

But against someone who's already insane, it had little effect. Instead, Steven easily realized it was a suggestive illusion—trying to make him subconsciously believe he was that consciousness, likely aiming for something akin to possession.

A clever ability. Unfortunately, it had attached itself to an insane bastard.

After reviewing the fragments and finding little useful information, Steven shrugged and answered Lin Yuxia.

He could resist the mental suggestion—but whether she could was another story. After all, her mind was normal.

As for those strange fragments of consciousness, Steven didn't waste them. He simply made space next to a certain Black Snake trapped in his mental prison… and tossed in a new "cellmate."

After all, that Black Snake must've been lonely. Giving it something new to keep it company seemed like a thoughtful gesture.

"Something interesting? Does it have to do with that figure just now?"

Lin Yuxia stepped closer and examined Steven carefully. She didn't really believe in ghosts, but throughout Yan, there had been cases where ordinary people touched something strange and suddenly changed personality—or seemed like an entirely different person.

Since this guy said that, she couldn't help wondering whether the person in front of her was still the same person as before.

"Probably? Some old guy tried to possess me, but wasn't strong enough, so I counter-killed him. Then I conveniently got the divine artifact he left behind. Pretty meh, right?"

Scratching his head, Steven summarized what had happened in his mind in just a few seconds. He didn't know where the thing got the courage to invade his consciousness, but he was quite satisfied with the fragment of authority it delivered.

"What do you think?"

Lin Yuxia rolled her eyes. From his usual nonsense answer, she could at least confirm he hadn't been affected. That level of brain-off absurdity wasn't something most people could imitate.

"I think it's time we go see your dad and that Yenwu guy. We've walked around, we've looted bargains—time to handle the real business."

Steven stroked his chin, speaking with unusual seriousness about his next plan.

"That doesn't sound like you. What's your real intention?"

"Obviously we should run before the staff wakes up! Getting stuff without paying—what a beautiful thing."

With a helpless sigh, she followed behind him. This guy caused trouble wherever he went. If she didn't keep an eye on him, who knew what he'd do next?

But just as Steven was about to leave the scene quickly with Lin Yuxia, two figures appeared at the doorway, blocking their path.

They wore blood-red hooded coats, with strange horn-like shapes atop their heads.

"I'm not trying to skip the bill or anything… this only counts as attempted, at most?"

Seeing the two extremely serious-looking figures, Steven—despite being the one involved—just gave an awkward smile and offered an excuse he didn't even believe himself.
