Chapter 547: Safety, or So They Said

By the time their conversation ended, Wei Yenwu's car had already come to a stop in front of the Guard Department.

Not particularly interested in eavesdropping any further, Wei Yenwu stepped out early, walking off to speak with a black-haired girl who had just come out to meet him.

As for Steven, the one assigned to receive him was someone he could already consider half an acquaintance—

The oni officer, Hoshiguma.

"Officer Hoshiguma, my earlier… incident didn't cause you too much trouble, I hope?" Steven asked with a casual smile.

Looking at the tall, green-haired woman before him—no longer someone you could call a "girl," but rather a striking and mature beauty—Steven couldn't help but feel at ease. Talking to her never felt awkward or uncomfortable.

Perhaps it was just her natural charisma.

At the very least, if it were that Officer Chen instead… Steven was fairly certain he wouldn't be able to suppress his habit of teasing people.

Call it compatibility.

With Hoshiguma, he found himself far more willing to chat casually, almost like talking to a friend.

"Hmm… how should I put it?" Hoshiguma clicked her tongue lightly, dragging over a small stool and plopping down beside him. "From my perspective, it's fine. You didn't really cause me any trouble, and I didn't have to pull extra shifts or anything."

She scratched her cheek, grinning.

"But as for my partner… Chen might have a tiny complaint or two."

She didn't look much like a high-ranking officer at all—more like a dependable, down-to-earth big sister from next door.

Hoshiguma had long since figured out that Steven wasn't the type to stir up trouble on his own. Most of the time, he just got dragged into things.

And now that even Wei Yenwu himself had stepped in to back him up again, she had even less reason to make things difficult for him.

No one had been injured because of him.

At worst, they'd worked a bit of overtime—and even got paid for it.

There was simply no reason to hold anything against him.

"That's good to hear," Steven said with a nod. "I actually came here to see my companion. She's been here almost a full day now… you didn't starve her, did you?"

The way he said it made it sound like he was checking on a pet left at a boarding shop, causing Hoshiguma to nearly burst out laughing.

"Don't worry," she reassured him, waving a hand. "The Guard Department's food and security are top-tier in all of Lungmen. That Sankta girl is doing just fine. If you don't believe me, you can see for yourself."

As she spoke, she led Steven down the corridor toward a secured room reserved for high-priority individuals.

Someone like Mostima wasn't the first important person the Guard Department had protected. In Hoshiguma's eyes, their capabilities were more than sufficient.

Steven's concern? Honestly, a bit unnecessary.

Just as she was about to take the opportunity to boast a little about their security measures—

She pushed open the door.

And the sight inside hit her like a resounding slap across the face.

The small room, which should have contained only Mostima… Now had two additional figures.

Two unfamiliar girls had appeared out of nowhere.

And judging by the faint noises coming from the ventilation shaft above, these two clearly weren't the only intruders.

"…Well," Steven said, patting Hoshiguma's shoulder with a sympathetic look. "I really liked what you said earlier about your 'top-tier security.' Maybe… don't be quite so confident next time."

His lips curled into a barely concealed grin of amusement.

The irony was just too perfect.

Even he hadn't expected that, aside from himself, there would be others bold enough to infiltrate the Guard Department to break someone out.

At this point, could they even be considered kindred spirits?

Narrowing his eyes slightly, Steven sized up the two girls who were just about to drag Mostima into the ventilation shaft and make their escape.

Though their faces were covered with black cloth, their racial traits were unmistakable—

Halos and wings.

Wolf ears.

They hadn't even bothered to hide them.

From those obvious traits alone, it wasn't hard for Steven to identify their races—

A Sankta… and a Lupo.

"I told you we should've left faster!" the Sankta girl—who shared the same halo and wings as Mostima, though with a vibrant wine-red hair—let out an energetic sigh, her voice oddly lively despite the situation. "See? We got caught anyway! So what now?!"

"Don't ask me," the black-haired Lupo girl shot back, rolling her eyes. "I never agreed with this plan in the first place."

If it weren't for being dragged into it, she would've never taken such a risk.

"Hey, how can you say that?" the red-haired Sankta retorted, puffing her cheeks. "We're all part of Penguin Logistics! How could we just leave her here to suffer in the Guard Department and pretend nothing's wrong?"

From the way she argued, it was painfully obvious that this whole reckless rescue plan had been her idea.

"…I'm not suffering here, you know. And I don't need this kind of pointless rescue…" Mostima muttered quietly, sounding utterly helpless.

Then, she turned her gaze toward Hoshiguma, who had finally snapped out of her earlier shock.

"Officer, I don't know these people," Mostima said with a faint, wry smile. "Why don't you just pretend they were never here?"

Hoshiguma had lifted her massive, door-like triangular shield, her stance making her intentions unmistakable.

—That was absolutely not happening.

Setting aside her duty as an officer, the fact that her "top-tier security" had just been publicly humiliated was reason enough.

At this point, it was personal.

"Hey, hey, wait—Big Sis Hoshiguma!" the Sankta girl immediately raised both hands the moment she saw the shield spinning like a chainsaw, the oni officer charging forward like a walking meat grinder. "I don't wanna fight you! We surrender! We surrender, okay?!"

Still clutching a firearm nearly identical to the ones Steven used, she performed a rather exaggerated, almost theatrical gesture of surrender, ending this battle before it had even truly begun.
