Chapter 95 - Chapter 95: Radio interview

Pewter City, sunset, just a few minutes until the sun completely gives up its reign for the day and lets the moon illuminate the world of Pokemon. In one of, if not the most famous places in all of the city, especially in the on-season of the Pokemon League, the Pewter City Rock-type Gym is a small speaker blasting at the fullest volume it could have, letting a certain man with perpetually closed eyes hear the FM radio's nightly interviews with emerging or famous people.

The man is holding a broom attached to a large stick and sweeping the ground of residual soil that was strewn up in the last battle alongside some apprentice gym trainers and the gym's breeder team, who are all in the rank of Breeder II and are either satisfied with their job, want to establish a daycare center for Pokémon, or want to further their education and become a Breeder III and be an apprentice of a Doctor Breeder to contribute to the academe.

Well, in any case, whatever these people want to do with their lives, all of them are able to hear the radio broadcast interview live from the speaker. Of course, as men and women of Pokémon, hearing something or anything Pokémon-related will make them perk their ears wide open.

"Goodevening to all our listeners in Pewter and in the world! Tonight we are with one of the topnotchers of the breeder's exam held not too long ago: Anthony Dover, giving us the privilege to hear his voice in an interview in Pewter's Feature."

As usual, the radio broadcaster used his very animated voice, presenting the person they were featuring right now. At the same time, the said person, seemingly only mildly interested in the interview, found this to be his cue.

"Hi everyone. I'm Anthony."

It seems like the kid is neutral about the interview and not even nervous; however, Gym Leader Brock and his gym staff, who were all up to date on the latest news in the Pokémon World, knew that this child was more interesting than what his tone suggests. From what Gym Leader Brock knew, this child is the main reason why Team Rocket's last remnants from the decimation it received from Hana and Ben Dover finally got nabbed as their double agents closest to the Kanto Research Lab failed to kidnap him, causing for their capture and torturous interrogation, as well hacking of their equipments that caused the whole structure of their bases to be located.

Plus, Anthony Dover is the son of Hana and Ben Dover, which may be the least interesting thing about the kid but is worth considering.

"I hope Little Mr. Anthony is fine and comfortable with us. Now, we know your schedule is packed since you're an Associate Field Researcher now, so let's not beat around the bush and start! First, we heard that you've actually set the record for the highest score for the second part of the breeder's exam, the practicum. How do you feel about that?"

"I... didn't hear about that. But I'm happy if I made history so early in my career as a breeder and as a field researcher; I hope I can make one as a trainer too."

"Oh? It seems like Mr. Anthony wanted to be a man of many talents, given that you're the child of the power couple Hana and Ben Dover; does this motivation comes from their influence? Or did you put it upon yourself to achieve heights as great, or perhaps greater, than them?"

"Well, just recently I got out of my lazy attitude towards life so that I can have as many credentials as possible and become more ambitious. So I would say that this is something I took upon myself."

"Oh! So it's more of a self-improvement initiative, how admirable! Do you want to be just like them as a trainer in specific?"

"No, I think that no one can become the next Hana or Ben Dover. When I grow up, I want to be just Anthony Dover, though I do also want that my achievements in Pokemon training will be enough for the 'son of Hana and Ben Dover' to be removed after my name."

As the heavily contrasting animated voice of the broadcaster and the neutral voice of the interviewee, Anthony Dover continued their exchange; the interest of Gym Leader Brock in Anthony seemed to just increase.

_He seems to be someone so calm, yet I feel like he's holding his voice so it doesn't crack at some ridiculous questions... he's also the one who got the double agents busted and the son of Ma'am Hana and Sir Anthony. Right, he's also in Pewter and seems to also want to be a successful trainer, unlike ones like Dr. Melissa or Jeremy who lean more on research..._

Whilst thinking of such, Gym Leader Brock can't help but smile.

_There will be no new Hana and Ben Dover, huh..._

As Brock stomped on the soil of the main battleground of the Rock-type gym of Pewter City, which is his own, he can't help but smile. He's looking forward to testing what Anthony Dover is really made of and to see if he really deserves to remove the 'son of Han and Ben Dover' title after his name.

Or if Anthony has any bite at all behind his words.

"So you want to surpass us! We welcome your challenge; come at us anytime you want! HAHAHAHA!"

"My son's voice is almost as handsome as mine!'

As Anthony was walking out of the radio studio after saying thank you to the anchor and other staff, he received two reverberating messages from his mom and dad, who, as usual, seem to forget that they are supposed to be strict and independence-fostering parents. Though everyone in the house, including Anthony, will be able to remember it once the two become the ones in charge of Anthony's training of Anthony.

While walking, Anthony can't help but sigh and ignore the message from his mom and dad by saying, 'I'm not battling you two,' before putting his phone away, though he once again heard two different vibrations, which seemed to be from Mary and Andrew, that had the same content: 'I'm in TV!' Anthony can't help but sigh as he opened the glass door of the station and took in the view of Pewter City, though he still replied with a 'I'm shy so I just accepted the one for the radio station'.

After making sure that his phone would not vibrate again, Anthony started walking to the Pokemon Center as he threw out two Pokeballs, which contained his two Pokemon: Miltank and Zubat. This was so they could start grooming themselves upon their arrival at the Pokemon Center, as Anthony wanted to have a good night's sleep before tomorrow, the day when he would be challenging his first-ever gym and would attempt the evolution of his partner Pokemon.

Alongside this, he also wanted to forget about the ominous 6th camera that suddenly appeared in his very first mission. While there's a fact that he knew Team Rocket was still lingering somewhere, he also felt like he ought to just be generally more careful on his 'easy missions'; after all, every mission is a mission sanctioned by the lab because it's supposed to have some kind of variable. As they say, everything that can go wrong will go wrong, and if nothing happened, then say thank you.

As Anthony made himself forcefully forget about the happenings during the day, he finally arrived at the Pokemon Center, where he and his Pokemon entered. Upon entering, Anthony went to the receptionist, who is, of course, not Nurse Joy, as she seemed to be tending to some kind of Pokemon emergency, and presented his trainer card after the receptionist greeted him with a good evening.

After confirming that Anthony Dover exists as a Pokemon Trainer, the recepti9nist pulled out a key out in front of her desk alongside the card of Anthony.

"Okay, Mr. Trainer Anthony Dover, these will be the keys to your room on the dorm floor of the Pokemon Center. There are only 5 rooms left for the night, so you're lucky, especially since you got interviewed live on the radio station. The place has two bathrooms, separate for humans and Pokémon, a double bunk bed depending on whether you will have a roommate or not; you can let your Pokémon sleep in one of the beds or sleep with you."

Anthony ignored the casual recognition of the receptionist knowing him because of the interview; instead, he replied.

"Will there be possible roommates, still?"

At this question, the receptionist nodded.

"Yes, but associate field researchers have their own dorm in their satellite labs; I believe there's one in Mt. Moon. If you go there you might get a single bed one. There might be one in other routes, like the one in route 12."

Anthony nodded at this, though he once again noticed the subtle recitation of his identity by the receptionist, which made him sigh. Odd and scary identity drops might be one of the curses of long-term or short-term fame.

_Oh, it might also be because of the lab gown._

While thinking of that, Anthony replied.

"I'm not exactly inclined to go to Mt. Moon or Route 12, though. I'll just wish that I could make my Pokémon rest in a bed instead of their Pokeball."

The receptionist nodded and wished Anthony a good night, which Anthony returned before putting his bag into the back of Miltank as well as the key to the room before walking to the stairs. While doing so, he also removed his lab gown and untucked his black T-shirt into his slacks.

_Sigh... I should focus on making Zubat evolve through Gym Leader Brock tomorrow..._

Zubat's growth has been very phenomenal in the past two years. First of all, the base form of Crobat, one of the fastest Fying and Poison types in the game is not supposed to be taking hits from a Pokemon that's so tanky and offensive at the same time like Miltank, mych less Anthony's Miltank that has the Defense Curl-Rollout-Bide combo encrusted in its mind and was trained to be the early heavy hitter of his team, yet here it is, only behind 2 wins to tie with Miltank.

Because of this, Zubat can learn lots of moves way beyond its current species. Though its go-to moves are always Wing Attack, Auto-Supersonic, Bite, and Absorb, the ones it has learned first in that order. Anthony is on the way to making sure that it can use other moves effectively, though, as well as Miltank, as not every time does a fixed strategy work.

Due to this, Zubat learned moves like Haze and Poison Fang, and has even realized a good compatibility with Acrobatics, as it was able to dodge and ride through air resistance in a way that naturally lets the move shine. However, Anthony wanted it not as a part of the combo moves of Zubat and instead something like an unexpected variable; after all, Acrobatics is too flashy compared to the Wing Attack-Auto Supersonic-Bite-Absorb combo that Zubat is used to doing.

In any case, Zubat will be fighting a Pokemon that its type is weak against and will be doing it for the sake of evolution. Anthony doesn't feel like it's disrespectful towards Gym Leader Brock; after all, his job is to test the capabilities of trainers and their Pokemon, and he's sure that Gym Leader Brock has his fair share of trainers that used him to evolve their Pokemon and a couple or more that have succeeded.

_I'll be sure to be one of them..._

Anthony was finally able to enter the dorm room as he thought of it.

While Anthony Dover was finally able to stop thinking about the ominous 6th camera that suddenly appeared in the habitat of Bulbasaurs, some figures within the Viridian Forest are hiding in an abandoned Ursaring's hibernation spot whilst several Flying-type Pokémon native to the Indigo Plateau are above their head, searching for these people.

In their hands are a camera and a tripod. These people have their faces full of tiredness whilst their teeth are gritting.

"Damn it! Why is it that the second we leave the camera to pee, someone's summoned birds above our fucking heads!"

"Well, that would be some good shit if I fucking knew! How about you shut your bitch ass up and think of a way for us to not be sniffing each other's ass inside this hole by morning, huh!? We even have to report our blunder, or else we would have all of us screwed over without even warning others!"
