Victor stared at the staircase. Darkness swallowed the faint light from the clearing above, leaving only a narrow path of worn stone descending into the earth. The scratches on the steps were unmistakable. Four toes. The same creature.
Whatever had been following them had led them here on purpose.
"Nobody moves." Samuel's voice cut through the silence, and the soldiers immediately formed a line between the staircase and the students. Weapons came up. A few students started whispering nervously among themselves.
Caleb stepped beside Victor. "Tell me we're not actually going down there."
"We're probably going down there."
Caleb's face fell. "I hate when you're right."
Seraphina stayed near the entrance, staring into the passage. "There could be something waiting for us."
"There is," Victor said.
She looked at him. "You sound very certain."
He didn't answer. He couldn't explain the notification still floating in front of his vision.
