Chapter 2: Project FOXFIRE
Three weeks after Anthony Voss entered the Faunus Adaptive Development Initiative, Tony knew which camera in the east corridor lost seven degrees of coverage whenever its housing warmed above normal operating temperature. He knew the night orderly on Level Two carried his access badge clipped to his belt rather than his chest because the lanyard irritated the scales along his neck. He knew the children's residential doors used electronic locking with mechanical emergency releases behind recessed maintenance panels. He knew the primary clinical network was segmented from the education network, the education network was separated from Atlas research traffic, and the research network itself connected outward through at least two independently authenticated routes he had not yet touched. He knew there were eight children. That last fact had taken the longest.
FOXFIRE did not advertise itself internally as a prison. That would have been inefficient. The halls were clean and warm. Food was regular. Staff smiled. Nobody dragged children through concrete corridors wearing chains. Education was real enough that Tony had already corrected two lesson modules and been asked, politely, not to rewrite curriculum without permission. There were recreation rooms. There were books. There was a small indoor exercise space with climbing structures designed around nonstandard Faunus anatomy. There were doctors. There were also cameras in every shared room, locked doors between residential sections, scheduled movement, biometric monitoring, Semblance evaluations, behavioral reports, and a research administration system that referred to him as F-01 whenever staff forgot the children could hear. Tony had lived inside luxurious prisons before.
They remained prisons. He sat at a workbench in one of FOXFIRE's technical-evaluation rooms while Dr. Elias Venn placed a damaged Atlas Knight hand between them. Tony tried not to look interested. He failed a little. Venn noticed. His mechanical left forearm rested against the table beside the Knight component. The prosthetic was functional, sturdy, and offensively conservative. Local articulation was good. Sensory integration appeared limited. The wrist coupling wasted volume. Tony had been trying not to redesign it since they met.
"You've been staring at my arm for thirty seconds," Venn said.
Tony looked toward the Knight hand instead.
"I was staring at the actuator."
"My actuator?"
"The Knight's."
Venn smiled. Tony disliked observant doctors.
"The exercise is simple," Venn said. "Tell me what is wrong with it."
The damaged hand looked mostly intact. Five fingers. Armored knuckles. Standard Atlas military construction. Several access seams. No obvious external break. Tony could have diagnosed it the normal way. He did. Visual inspection first. Slight discoloration near the index-finger joint. No impact deformation. Palm plate reseated incorrectly at some point. Then he touched the maintenance port. Handshake opened. The sensation still surprised him. Not because it was unfamiliar anymore. Because it was intimate. Machines had always made sense to Tony. He had learned hardware like another language and software like an argument with fewer lies. Handshake took that relationship and removed several layers of translation. The Knight's diagnostic interface existed against his awareness. Motor state. Position sensors. Error history. Maintenance flags. Access permission.
Tony did not receive understanding for free. He already knew Atlas actuator logic well enough to interpret the values because FOXFIRE had given him technical material and because Tony Stark had spent decades building machines that moved under impossible loads. He followed the valid diagnostic path. Index-finger position feedback disagreed with commanded movement. Compensation routines had been increasing current to the motor. Thermal warnings followed. The system had eventually disabled the digit. Tony disconnected.
"Position sensor is drifting. Probably mount damage, not sensor failure. Controller kept compensating until it overheated the joint."
Venn stared. Tony looked down. Too fast. Again.
"How did you determine that?"
Tony considered pretending not to understand. Bad acting. Instead he shrugged.
"It told me."
"The hand told you."
"Diagnostics."
"You were connected for four seconds."
"Fast reader."
Venn's eyes narrowed. Tony made himself fidget. That had become part of the performance. Children moved. Adults read stillness as confidence. Fidgeting bought him room.
"Can you repair it?" Venn asked.
Tony looked at the available tools.
"Maybe."
"Maybe?"
"I don't know if you actually have the replacement mount or if you're testing whether I lie about missing hardware."
Venn smiled again.
"Good."
Tony hated tests where the correct answer was refusing the premise. He also respected them. Venn opened a drawer. Three parts sat inside. Tony identified the correct one. His hands slowed him down. That remained humiliating. Six-year-old fingers lacked strength, span, fine motor endurance, and the casual precision Tony expected from his body. He knew exactly how the mount should sit and still needed two attempts to align it. Venn watched without helping. Good. Tony eventually reseated the assembly, reconnected Handshake, calibrated the sensor, and flexed the Knight's index finger through a diagnostic cycle. It worked. Venn leaned back.
"Your Semblance doesn't repair things for you."
"No."
"It doesn't tell you what component means what."
"No."
"You understand the machine separately."
Tony looked at him. Careful.
"Some."
Venn's eyes moved toward the hand.
"Some."
Tony said nothing.
"Dr. Marrow believes Handshake may represent direct technological control."
"Dr. Marrow likes labels."
"Most doctors do."
Tony glanced at Venn's arm.
"Your wrist motor is underpowered."
Silence. Tony realized what he'd said. Venn slowly looked down at his prosthetic. Then back up.
"The Knight's actuator?"
Tony considered lying.
"No."
"Interesting."
Damn.

FOXFIRE's technical tests became more complicated after that. Tony made sure his results did not. Underperforming intelligently was harder than pretending to be stupid. Stupid created attention of its own. The goal was plausible exceptionalism. A gifted child with a useful Semblance. Unusual. Valuable. Not impossible. The staff gave him air-gapped simulation systems first. Power routing. Mechanical diagnostics. Industrial control problems. Tony solved enough to maintain the fiction and deliberately missed enough to create a developmental curve. He learned FOXFIRE's scoring habits. Once evaluators believed they knew his limits, they stopped designing tests to find the real ones. Handshake itself helped. The ability did not bypass an air gap because an air gap was an actual physical absence of connection. Tony approved. Reality still existed.
It could not unlock encrypted data simply because he wanted it. It could not command a machine without a valid interface path. It could not transform unfamiliar hardware into knowledge. What it did was eliminate interface latency. He could operate a system at thought speed where someone else needed hands, eyes, menus, keystrokes, and screen changes. That alone was absurdly powerful. FOXFIRE still underestimated it. Tony encouraged them. The first external hardware they allowed him to evaluate beyond isolated laboratory units was a Dust turbine used for emergency power. The machine had a recurring vibration problem. Technicians suspected a mechanical imbalance. Tony touched the service interface. Handshake gave him the sensors. He compared bearing temperature, rotational speed, Dust injection timing, exhaust pressure, and vibration phase. The bearing was fine. The control loop wasn't.
Fire Dust injection lagged by a fraction under load, creating irregular thermal expansion that the turbine's mechanical sensors interpreted as imbalance. Tony identified the timing error. Then deliberately spent eleven additional minutes pretending to work it out. Dr. Marrow watched through the glass. Venn stood beside her. Tony could not hear them. He didn't need to. Marrow's posture said interest. Venn's said suspicion. Different kinds. Tony filed both.

He met Lio Varren after an alarm. FOXFIRE called it a Performance Envelope Expansion assessment. Tony called it pushing a ten-year-old until something broke and then acting surprised about which part. He was returning from education when a warning light flashed above a door in the adjoining evaluation wing. The alarm lasted less than three seconds before staff silenced it. Tony stopped walking. His escort placed one hand gently against his shoulder.
"Keep moving, Anthony."
Tony looked at the closed door. A heavy impact struck something inside. Then another.
"What was that?"
"Another child's evaluation."
Interesting. FOXFIRE usually kept subject schedules staggered enough that children rarely encountered one another accidentally. Tony let the escort move him. He counted doors. Later, during recreation, he found Lio sitting alone near the far wall. Black horns swept backward from the boy's head. A bruise darkened one cheek. His hands shook slightly around a cup of water. Tony chose the chair opposite him. Lio looked up.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Then go away."
Tony stayed. Lio's eyes narrowed.
"You're the wing kid."
"You're the horn kid."
"There are two horn kids."
"You're the loud one."
Lio stared. Tony smiled. Something almost like amusement moved across Lio's face and disappeared.
"You heard it."
"Alarm?"
"Yeah."
Tony looked toward the nearest camera.
"What happened?"
Lio's jaw tightened.
"Test."
"What kind?"
"How long I could hold density."
Tony knew the summary. Lio's Semblance increased the density and durability of his body, producing enormous short-term strength at equally enormous Aura cost. Useful. Military useful. FOXFIRE definitely knew that.
"How long?"
Lio stared at him.
"Why do you care?"
Tony thought about the alarm.
"Curious."
"You're weird."
"Accurate."
Lio drank.
"They kept increasing weight."
Tony's expression didn't change.
"Until?"
"I dropped it."
"That why the alarm?"
Lio looked away.
"Aura went out."
There. Tony sat back.
"Did they stop when you said stop?"
Lio's eyes snapped toward him. Good question, apparently.
"I didn't."
"Why not?"
Lio laughed without humor.
"Because then they write that I quit."
Tony hated the answer.
"You want to be here?"
Lio stared. Then he looked directly toward the camera.
"Love it."
Sarcasm. Ten-year-old sarcasm was rarely subtle. Tony approved.
"Yeah," he said. "Me too."
Lio's attention sharpened. That was the beginning.

Finding the other children became Tony's secondary project. The primary remained escape. He kept a list inside his head because anything written could be found. He knew Lio. That made two. A girl with deer ears and small antlers passed him once during a medical transfer. Three. A younger child with mothlike antennae and two smaller secondary arms appeared through a recreation-room window for less than a minute. Four. A scaled boy. Five. A feline girl. Six. Ram horns. Seven. Then nothing. Tony spent six days wondering whether his count was wrong. FOXFIRE documentation avoided global subject lists on networks accessible from ordinary residential systems. Smart. Eventually Tony found a maintenance schedule. Not names. Doors. Eight environmental-control zones in the residential wing received individualized filtration calibration. Eight. Tony smiled. Subject count confirmed.
Now he needed names. And choices. The original escape plan had been simple in the abstract. Map the building. Find exits. Acquire credentials. Wait until his body and wings could handle the distance. Leave. Then Lio existed. Then six more children existed. Tony changed the plan. NO EXIT UNTIL SUBJECT COUNT CONFIRMED became the first formal rule in his mental project file. Two days later he changed it again.
NO EXIT ALONE.
He hated himself a little for how familiar that felt. Once upon a time Tony Stark had been very good at deciding that if he was capable of saving someone, he was therefore responsible for doing it. It had nearly killed him repeatedly. Eventually it had killed him successfully. That did not make leaving seven kids behind feel more acceptable. He needed infrastructure. The conclusion kept returning. Escape was not getting through a door. Escape was having somewhere to go afterward. Seven children complicated that. Eight if he counted himself. Food. Water. Beds. Medical care. Legal identities. Transportation. Education. Security. Power. Tony had been a billionaire once. He missed money.

FOXFIRE made the mistake of giving him access to broken Atlas hardware. It was a reasonable mistake. Broken equipment was ideal for studying Handshake because research staff could compare Tony's diagnoses against known faults without giving him control of operational military systems. They removed wireless modules. Disconnected external networking. Stripped sensitive storage. Tony approved of their caution. He also benefited from their disposal habits. The first Knight processor that mattered arrived inside a damaged torso assembly with most military functions physically removed. Tony spent two sessions mapping the remaining architecture through Handshake. On the third he found FOX-CORE-02. Not a secret military network. Nothing that convenient. A maintenance bridge.
FOXFIRE used a local compatibility layer to load diagnostic packages into Atlas hardware without connecting each unit directly to the research network. The bridge was heavily restricted, authenticated, and supposed to be one-way for most operations. Supposed to be. Tony did not attack it. He studied. There was a difference. The interface path was legitimate when a FOXFIRE workstation requested a package. Handshake could follow valid connected electronic pathways while Tony maintained contact. He could feel the bridge when staff loaded diagnostic firmware. Not control everything beyond it. Not magically leap networks. But feel the route. A door that opened occasionally was still a door. Tony waited. He spent another week behaving. Then during a scheduled upload, he followed the path only far enough to understand the maintenance environment on the other side.
He found a local staging server. Restricted. Logged. Boring. Perfect. Tony disconnected before doing anything else. He had learned patience. Pepper would have been proud. Probably suspicious first.

The idea for A.D.A. began as a resource problem. Tony needed hands. Not metaphorical hands. Literal ones. He was six. Even if he escaped tomorrow, he could not operate heavy equipment, fabricate large structures, drive most vehicles legally, sign contracts, purchase property, or walk into an industrial supplier and request enough server hardware to support a hidden base without attracting attention. Automation could. Tony started with small agents. Nothing intelligent. Log monitors. Scheduling tools. Pattern detection. Procurement comparison. Code generation assistance. Things he had built in variations since adolescence on Earth. He used air-gapped FOXFIRE test systems as development environments and memorized the useful portions. Nothing important remained on their hardware. At night, using the room terminal and Handshake, he recreated pieces inside innocuous educational storage.
Then deleted them. Again. Again. He was reconstructing habits more than software. JARVIS had taken years of iteration to become JARVIS. FRIDAY had grown inside infrastructure Tony no longer possessed. He would not build copies. He would not pretend he could resurrect them by reusing names and voice patterns. JARVIS had become Vision. An individual. FRIDAY had been herself. Tony wanted help. He did not want ghosts. The architecture in his head gradually became something new. Distributed. Modular. Designed for independence because Tony could not guarantee his own continued access. Designed around uncertainty because Remnant contained technology he did not fully understand. Designed to refuse catastrophic instructions because Tony had learned, painfully, that intelligence without judgment was not enough. That last part mattered.
He stopped one night with his fingers against the terminal and stared at the blank screen. Ultron. The memory was old. Still sharp. He was not doing that again. No accidental awakening. No throwing experimental cognition at a global network because the world scared him and he wanted a suit of armor around everything. If Tony built a person, he would know he was building a person. He would do it deliberately. And he would accept that person could tell him no. Not yet. First he needed enough hardware to do it properly. The architecture got a placeholder name.
ADA.
Autonomous Digital Architect. Tony stared at the words. A little on the nose. He kept them.

Dr. Marrow began scheduling longer Handshake evaluations. Tony began shortening his apparent endurance. The first real overload happened unintentionally. FOXFIRE connected him to three laboratory systems at once and asked him to compare response latency. Tony could. Too easily. He opened all three through Handshake. The information arrived faster than his biological brain wanted. Headache first. Then nausea. Then pressure behind his eyes. Tony disconnected. Blood touched his lip. Marrow stopped the test immediately. Good. No argument. She moved him to a recovery room and reduced his future simultaneous-load ceiling. Tony watched her while pretending to be more exhausted than he was. Interesting. FOXFIRE wanted data. Marrow still cared if the data hurt him. Those were not mutually exclusive. Morality remained annoyingly complicated. Venn visited later.
He checked the Aura monitor, then sat beside the bed.
"You scared her."
Tony looked over.
"Marrow?"
"Yes."
"She has a weird job."
Venn laughed once. Then he studied Tony.
"Why Atlas Knights?"
Tony's stomach tightened.
"What?"
"Your requests. Whenever we give you equipment options, you choose Knights, industrial loaders, mining hardware, power systems."
Tony shrugged.
"Robots are interesting."
"More interesting than medical systems?"
Careful.
"Medical systems killed my mom."
Venn's expression changed. The lie was technically false and emotionally useful. The machines had not killed Mara. They simply hadn't saved her. Tony continued before Venn could push.
"Construction machines build things."
"What do you want to build?"
Tony looked at his small hands. Everything. A home. An arc reactor. A fabrication facility. A medical system that never made him watch another person die because the right machine did not exist. Armor, maybe. Not for himself. Maybe for everyone. He gave Venn the answer a six-year-old could plausibly give.
"A better hand."
Venn looked toward his prosthetic. Tony smiled faintly. It worked. Mostly. Venn stood to leave. At the door he stopped.
"Anthony."
Tony looked over.
"You're allowed to ask us for things without turning them into tests."
Tony said nothing. Venn left. The camera above the door continued watching. Tony waited until he was alone. Then he touched the bedside terminal. Handshake opened. FOX-CORE-02 pulsed faintly beyond the local system when a maintenance package crossed the bridge three rooms away. Tony felt the route. He smiled. Venn was wrong about one thing. Tony was allowed to ask. That didn't mean anyone had to say yes. He preferred systems where the answer depended on engineering. The staging server opened for eight seconds. Tony followed. Not far. Enough. A path out of FOXFIRE existed. He still didn't have somewhere to go. That was next.
